Dune: Part Two

We'd be no better than Harkonnens.

I'm a day one Denis' Dune truther, so I already knew he had the juice. But this is on another level. It might be his best work.

Visually, it's as striking as the first film, but the journey into the deep desert and the detours to other planets offer a much more varied palette. The opening set piece under the eclipse—my God. The sequence on Giedi Prime—absolute perfection (Léa Seydoux, call me).

The sound editing/design is stunning, and Zimmer turns in another banger. You'll still be vibrating in your seat (especially in IMAX) but where the music in Part One evoked intrigue and foreboding, Part Two's score achieves something far more emotional and operatic.

... But the heart is not meant to lead.

What I (deeply) love most about Dune: Part Two though, is the love story between Paul and Chani. Chalamet and Zendaya bring it in this film, and the added depth Villeneuve has given Chani's character brings new weight to their relationship.

The emotional core in Herbert's Dune, to me, was always Paul's despair in being caught up in "terrible purpose". In Denis's Dune, instead it's this beautiful connection between two (insanely charismatic and attractive) star-crossed lovers—caught up in a massive intergalactic tragedy.

Lovers in a dangerous time.
