Esai Morales is so bad in this. I was genuinely secondhand embarrassed every time he was onscreen. He was either horribly miscast or he just did not understand the tone of the movie. He’s acting like a campy Bond villain and that just does not work for the role of Gabriel at all. I can’t say I found the plot particularly original or compelling, but the performances are excellent, and there are moments of very cool and dynamic camerawork. Sophie Wilde, Miranda Otto (who I was overjoyed to see), and Joe Bird (who gives a very impressive performance for such a young actor) in particular able to make emotional moments feel authentic and scary moments truly visceral, even if the script  isn’t particularly subtle. It may not have blown my mind, but I’d say this is an overall solid directorial debut and a fun watch.

It’s interesting seeing a North Korean perspective on the war and on American imperialism, although it definitely suffers from a certain lack of nuance in its uncritical worship of the Kim family. Still, I watched this as part of my EALC class at university, and in retrospect I am surprised by how little the propaganda in this movie differs from the propaganda in American films.
