]]>“it’s a famine of beauty, honey! my eyes are starving for beauty.” is what i told myself before deciding to watch the 4k restoration of suspiria. after watching the magnificent film the ugly stepsister, i needed to find another film as pretty (albeit in a different way)
questionable acting, horrible dubbing, sometimes obnoxious music but the film is so pretty (THE COLORS! the cinematography! set design!), the effects are so cool and the atmosphere is so entrancing, that it doesn’t even matter. every single shot matters and is a beautiful (sometimes disgusting) masterpiece. i’d say it’s a stylish with little substance kind of film but i’m bewitched either way. third act was the best. another comfort film, potentially?
]]>This review may contain spoilers.
loved the practical effects! but probably the most disgusting film i’ve ever watched. surprisingly funny at times tho. would have been more fun if in the end they realized that they were both infected and then got rescued, lmao. so where is the oscar nomination for the first dog we saw and that played The Thing?
]]>“you’re changing your outside to fit what you know is on the inside.”
the horrors we inflict on ourselves and others in order to fit into toxic beauty standards, often to please people who aren’t even worth it. whimsy mixed with body horror, they really made this for me! more beautiful films like this please!! the score, the cinematography, the sets, the costumes, the acting! it’s a yes from me. maybe a slightly better ending would have made my rating higher but it was still fine. maybe even potential comfort film? (what?)

this is how you immediately grab my attention!! from the very first few minutes i was hooked and it just kept getting more interesting which is a lot coming from me because i’m not the biggest fan of “found footage/documentary style” films
seeing the main character be so cocky and then lose everything in just a moment was satisfying lmao who’s laughing now? see how fast the oppressor becomes the oppressed? see how fast the predator becomes the prey? deserved! he had his moments but he still lowkey was a piece of shit until near the end of the film ☠️ how dare he put christopher and his baby (🤍🤍🤍) in danger 🫵🤧 well tbh…most of the humans in this were garbage. anyway, loved it!

how GORGEOUS was this film? this is my first wes anderson film. a feast for my eyes and ears. prettiest film ever. not only gorgeous but surprisingly funny too! it comes at no surprise that i love his style considering one of my favorite films ever is submarine (2010) which i heard for a long time looks similar to anderson’s style. if i were to have a film made about my life i’d want it directed by richard ayoade and wes anderson! maybe it’s time for me to devour the latter’s filmography.

i will probably make that dance sequence my whole personality for at least a week. if everything in this film had been as peak as this scene, this would have been a 5/5 for sure. spiritually orgasmic.
that being said. i’m bummed i didn’t like this one as much as i thought i would. a lot to like: the performances (michael b jordan and jack o’connell stood out to me the most but everyone was great. jack tho..it was like seeing an old friend), the cinematography, the music, using vampirism as a metaphor for cultural assimilation, the illusion of freedom…but the story itself kind of fell flat to me. while some scenes dragged, others felt rushed. it never felt quite…right. except for that scene, of course. the switch to the vampirism was also jarring, for a moment i thought i was watching a totally different film and even when the vampires came into the picture, everything happened too fast. the human-vampire fight was underwhelming, it felt rushed…so did the ending. well, the first one. yeah, you have to stay until after the end credits for this one. there was a lot of potential for this to be great in my eyes but it never reached it. i just…expected way more. but this is objectively not a bad film. it can’t be bad with a dance sequence like this. 🫶 (will i ever shut up about this scene? no🤍)
]]>watching a cat movie on my cat’s birthday…makes sense. but also had to watch this one considering ryan coogler said this film inspired him to make sinners and if sinners (which i will watch soon) is as amazing as the last fight between puss and Death…i’m in. (even if it was too easily resolved)
“and i don’t mean metaphorically, or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or in any other fancy way. i’m Death…straight up.” automatically (🤓) one of my new fave characters, ever. in fact, i know i already said that a film in which cats have a prominent role can’t go lower than 3 but this one truly was at its best whenever the wolf/Death was on screen. like, he truly elevated everything. truly a sick-looking villain, truly terrifying with AURA. and i wish he appeared more often because unfortunately, i was led to believe i would like this film way more than i actually did. don’t get me wrong, definitely better than the first one with excellent animation (and the textureeees) but i didn’t find it that funny, i thought some scenes dragged and had the potential to be better. i was also kinda indifferent towards the music. there were some cool new characters tho (not all of them) and realistic depiction of a panic attack.

“men have always hated us.”
“no. they just destroyed the warren because we were in their way.”
“they’ll never rest until they’ve spoiled the earth.”
not as traumatizing as the plague dogs but still pretty fucked up. loved the voice acting and atmosphere which gave me the same uncomfortable and melancholic feeling as the voice acting in the plague dogs which makes sense considering it’s from the same director/producer/writer!
the different looking rabbits reminded me of the lion king 2 and jesus that bird acted like a friend who’s been told to look at someone who’s behind them DISCREETLY and then they turn around and do the exact opposite ⚰️ also that female cat named CAT’s (wtf) owner always prevented her from eating (i had to mention the cat in some way) #rude (but also good because the food was one of our dear rabbits)

]]>“yes we’re all connected, but it takes real magic to connect the right people at the right time.”
first of all, who is that impostor on the poster…the cat in this was a grown ass man, not a kitten
you don’t decide to watch a film like this and expect oscar-worthy performances, cinematography, screenplay or anything of quality, really so it didn’t really matter and all things considered all of this was better than expected. the royalty-free music was kinda obnoxious during some parts because it didn’t fit at all lmao. beautiful scenery tho. besides the cat (“SQUEAKY” irl), tina and her mother were clearly the best actors in this. i can easily see them fitting in in a better film. no film with a cat as a main character is ever a waste of time so no matter what, this couldn’t go lower than a 3/5 but the cat talking with the subpar special effect on its mouth and his deep voice cracking me up + the scene of them saving him with the magical necklace (with once again subpar effects) warming my heart made it rise to 4 STARS AND A HEART. #absolutecinema
when twink #1 said “what do you do when you like a girl?” i was just like…*britney voice* girl? 🤨 like the director was clearly setting up something with twink #2, alas
"your impression is terrible, but the movies seem good. not enough cats though." me whenever i watch most films..NOT ENOUGH CATS
"that's the problem with you humans, you're all so concerned with knowing the destination, you forget to enjoy the trip."
“you need to stop selling yourself short. if you keep living and learning and reaching out, the life you think you’re missing is going to land right in your lap.”
of course the most thoughtful quotes of this film are coming from THE CAT. i expected nothing less
you got cats protecting their owners against robbers, dangerous dogs, saving them from imminent death, beating up bears, tigers and gators…and you also got cats making people realize their own power and helping them find romantic and platonic love! cats can do it all!
]]>This review may contain spoilers.
“i don’t want to grow up…if it hurts like this.” felt.
i love the way the scenes with the cats were shot. obviously the film was at its best when it focused solely on the cats and not the humans with their boring drama and subpar acting. it even seems like it was filmed better when it was just the cats on screen. maybe i’m biased because i was more invested 🤷♀️ but i would have preferred more cats and less humans. madeleine was kinda cool but i’m judging that pro outdoor-cat stance. said outdoors that almost killed him. but they knew better than to kill that cat. i was about to be more pissed than i was when the annoying little girl told rroû (wtf kind of name is that btw) not to come back home just because he did what cats like to do because of their instinct: kill mice.
that cat was way braver and more adventurous than my cat btw. also had a better love life too. his facial expressions, his physical acting, his comedic timing…where is his oscar?! the score was really cool too, very enchanting and all the cats and other animals were adorable. had this been only about rroû, i probably would have given this 5 stars and a heart. alas.

“what’s he doing?!”
“he’s being affectionate!”
“well, it hurts!”
“well…love hurts.”
my first audible reaction to a movie about a dog: “is that a fucking cat??” (well, actually i think it was a kitten..)
well, i was expecting a fun, family-friendly film that would make me laugh or at least cringe. and while some parts were indeed cringe, i didn’t expect the amount of times i almost cried while watching this…nor did i expect to cry at all which is exactly what ended up happening in the third act! this was simultaneously so heartwarming and heartbreaking. and very surprising. the violence of some scenes?! the twist?! not to mention that one scene with all the different animals which looked pretty similar to the film the plague dogs…even with the chimpanzee! but thankfully with a much better ending. i also liked the ethereal, dreamy look of fluke’s memories and the score was also really good and “warm”. were some parts of it scottish or irish?
the fact that the dogs who played fluke and rumbo weren’t nominated for any oscar tho….a dog (two dogs) robbed. i mean, that death scene?

“a heavy tax shall be levied against all parasites and sponges such as the elderly, the infirm, and especially…hehe, little children.”
this quote…not to mention the drink spiking…they don’t make daring, scary and atmospheric disney movies like this anymore. bring back 2D animation in disney movies!!!
not one of my fave disney films, way more boring than i . even the clocktower scene when ratigan fully embraces his rat-ness/wild side, which is the best scene in this (also the only scene i could before rewatching because how could i forget THAT scene), couldn’t elevate it so it will stay at 3/5. but he was still genuinely terrifying during it, one of the scariest disney villains. but i wish vincent price had used a slightly deeper voice for him overall. it was still fine tho. anyway, speaking of terrifying: that ugly ass bat. also the opening scene (with that ugly ass bat)
i also forgot there was a cute cat in this but she was one of the villains and her end was terrible so that’s anti-cat propaganda to me! *crowd booing*

“why do they do it, snitter? i’m not a bad dog.” 💔💔💔
snitter accidentally causing the death of the 2 people who actually cared about his well-being…will i ever recover? i literally made this face when the gun accidentally went off: 😳
“i’d rather die here than in the whitecoats’ tank. it’s little enough dignity we‘ve got left.”
i really liked the voice acting from the ones who voiced the main dogs in this, especially rowf. it felt…melancholic?
i also had a feeling that at least one of the three was going to die but i was still very sad when it happened. rip the tod 😭😭💔💔💔

“felicity, we’re talking about murder!”
“murder? oh, i’m sure you’re wrong. i think it’s more likely that it’s sex that’s just gone too far.”
cult, sex, graphic violence, gruesome murders, eugenics. definitely not an animated film for kids but also definitely something i would have watched as a kid.
“the killer has to be a sex machine himself who doesn’t like competition from others and decided to wipe them out. or else he has a general objection to fornication.”
i literally yelled “NOOOOO” when they showed felicity’s decapitated body 😭😭😭😭 WHYYYYYYYYY she was so sweet fuck my entire life 😭😭😭
“her eyes were wide open, as though even with her last breath, the one thing she longed desperately for was to see.” 💔💔💔
