"Not having someone to hate makes it all the worse for me. So once a year, I make him feel awful too. Will the gods punish me for that?"

Avoiding confrontations, complaining but never addressing issues directly, veiling ive-aggression in customary politeness, making promises you know you'll never keep. All of it feels too real. As if you're not watching a film but peering through a window into someone’s family. People in this family don't magically change, their conflicts remain unresolved. There's no tidy happy ending. But strangely enough, when the credits roll, the film leaves you with an unexpected sense of fulfillment (guess that's kore-eda for you!)

i genuinely thought this was gonna be one of those anime I'd drop by fifth episode, but i ended up inhaling whole of season one like maomao inhales sh*t that should k!ll her.

the storyline is so good and maomao makes for such an iconic mc. it almost felt like watching a historical cdrama except, its actually interesting lol. also, its kinda insane the kind of chemistry maomao and jinshi have, the animators definitely did an amazing job here.

The last few minutes saved my mental health from plummeting down to pre-friend-group shieun level, i think.

Its not very often that a show's second season manages to be almost as perfect as the first. I wasn't really feeling it initially (lack of suho et al), but suddenly ryeoun pops up by the end of ep 2 and the next thing i knew, I'd warmed up to these new characters already. this was somewhat bland and dramatic, but that's part of the charm. despite maintaining an almost false sense of calm throughout, the film felt quietly unsettling at times. as someone not familiar with kiyoshi kurosawa's other works, i can only assume that its his brand as a horror filmmaker seeping through.
i honestly did not expect to like the film as much as i did, but i ended up surprising myself in the end.

I simply adore shows with strong religious themes that put emphasis on the weaponisation of religion and effectively manage to criticize what needs to be criticized without an ounce of disrespect or tasteless humor.

Having seen both Hill House and Bly Manor, I'd reached the conclusion that Mike Flanagan is no doubt amazing at what he does, but he just isn't my cup of tea. The only reason I went into this was because I'm a sucker for shows involving cultish tight-knit communities and I heard that there are no 'ghosts' involved in this one. I finished watching this the day before yesterday and its only now that i can collect my thoughts a bit.

I wasn't really feeling the show in the initial episodes as it seemed to be heading towards that preachy flanagan style direction, but I'm glad I kept watching cuz it only got better and better with the last two episodes being freaking amazing. As a non-Catholic, I really found the mass scenes so fascinating as I hadn't expected it to be all so ritualistic (also loved the aesthetics!). I would like to send flowers to the makers for first, creating the most evil character known to mankind (i loathe you bev keane); and second, for the closest thing to an accurate Muslim representation I've ever seen on screen.

The ending was honestly so so beautiful with all those people reaching acceptance staying close to their loved ones, Erin thinking back on her conversation with Riley, Bev being fcking miserable, and Hassan and Ali praying Fajr on the beach with Ali leading as the Imam (which is really significant as we spent the whole show with him struggling with his faith wanting to fit in and at the end he finally affirms it).

[i wanna add another star for rahul kohli's existence and hamish linklater's baller performance but that would kinda tip the whole scale of my already very logical rating system.]

first of all,

WANG YIBO YOU'RE SO EFFIN COOL!!!! 🗣️🗣️🗣️

I'm honestly so impressed by yibo like i already knew he is a great actor but to match thee tony leung?? insane business. Petition to have him play more supposedly evil roles (involving vintage suits, mirrors, smoking while covered in blood, and beating up people)!!

So glad that this is the movie to bring me out of the 'cinema slump' I've been in. For a C propaganda film, its very well made cuz i honestly did not see any unnecessary glorification of the "communists". Even the portrayal of the imperial army was pretty mild in my opinion. The guangzhou scene in the beginning was quite harrowing tho, especially as it parallels the imagery we have been seeing come out of gaza day after day for a year now.

Although, the back-and-forth of the narrative sequence and the random jumps had me utterly confused for about half of the film, it was still a pretty engrossing watch and everything came together at the end. The fight sequences were so well done that they had me stressed. And I'm not even going to talk about the art of tony leung smoking and idk just existing cuz that would require another paragraph.

now, about the drama.
idk why but for some reason i expected some ocn level stuff. i mean no insult to the show when i say this, but the thriller aspect didn't quite work for me. maybe its because the culprit is revealed in the first episode itself? or maybe its the pacing? or strange character decisions which just makes one too frustrated to focus on anything else? or the confusing timelines? or maybe its that annoying quote being said thrice every episode. whatever the reason, it had me wishing this was shorter.

that said, I'd still give it three and half stars for its uniqueness, go min-si's amazing performance, gorgeous cinematography, and some truly beautiful cars!

wanted to like this so bad, but it just wasn't for me. the concept is super interesting, and Mamoru Hosoda is a genius for it, but it felt like there were too many things happening at the same time. this should have made the film fast-paced, but somehow, all that made it seem even longer. despite all their 'eccentricities', the characters seemed boring and pretty one-dimensional. kenji just comes out as a dork and, natsuki feels like an annoying side character for most of the film. also, there is this slight unclecon problem...

(DIRECTOR'S CUT)

this was way more unhinged than i expected lol.
however, i was promised folk-horror. this was more like folk-fcking-weird.

maybe its just me, but i found the horror element not impactful at all. yes, it is very disturbing and did had me feeling uneasy, but the shock value got old pretty fast. the first ceremony with the elders shocked me to the core. after that, it was like 'yeah these people are completely insane' and thus i was ready for anything (also, there were plenty of hints for the future events already). so, nothing quite managed to make the impact that it was supposed to. moreover, i couldn't really bring myself to care for any of the characters.

still, I'm rounding this off to four stars because i found the premise interesting enough to warrant a rewatch. the viewing experience was really enjoyable as well despite all the unsavory events and long length of the film.

while the adaptation is decent enough, it felt very un-dostoyevsky like to me. it is a little too dramatic, in line with most movies made in that era i suppose. moreover, i found it to be slightly lacking in the poetic monologues that made the book amazing. the film focuses too much on nastenka instead of 'the dreamer' himself. nastenka is also easier to hate here, with how freaking dramatic she acts. still, i enjoyed the scenes at her house; the grandmother was fun to watch, and the house itself is so cute!

If it hadn't been for you, I would never have been found.
If it hadn't been for you, I would have never found myself.

I'm so glad I didn't watch this in theatres, cuz I would have embarrassed myself and ruined everyone's experience by bawling my eyes out.

this was probably the first time in idk how many years that i willingly watched a hindi film and ended up liking it. what a wholesome gem of a movie bro. loved every single performance here. the last 20 minutes had me choking on emotions but then deepak with his excellent delivery of "khudai chale jao" made me laugh so hard.

kiran rao I'm literally begging you to make more movies. the bollywood needs saving queen.

Your childhood was stolen, too. By the adults in your life. You should take it back, gradually.

Dad was really useless. But maybe he was a kind man.
Why?
Because he left us such a lovely little sister.

I'm physically unable to express how much I adore this film.

I'm never watching a tsai ming-liang movie alone ever again. i feel emotionally drained.

the film is visually pleasing at times, i guess. as visually pleasing a movie set in a big crowded city with its neon lights, dilapidated buildings with drainage issues, love motels with unclean rooms, and aimless young adults struggling with loneliness and existencial crisis could be. it is also revolting. revolting with a lingering melancholy that never leaves throughout its entirety.

edit [cat rant]: i understand that there are cats who are quiet and smart and know when to shut tf up but like girl,, not meowing near water and easily going underwater and being so calm throughout?!??? every single cat i know (i know a lot) would have raised a racket and gotten everyone killed.

beautiful. ghibli's most nuanced creation yet. it's apparent that miyazaki's whole heart and soul was put into this one. and i genuinely wish i could give the film more appreciation, but sadly, i do not vibe with (war)planes the way miyazaki does. still, i can ire the s-tier animation, jiro as a character, the gentle portrayal of romance between jiro and naoko, and the amount of ion put into the film.

also, now i understand why miyazaki was so hell-bent on having hideaki anno play jiro. the man really has a magical voice I'm obsessed.

"iilylimbattaim" [choking, crying, throwing up]

everytime i go into a jane austen adaptation hoping to somewhat be able to relate to the fl, and everytime i end up identifying with one or the other loser-coded man instead 😭

sadly, i still haven't read the novel (it's staring at me in disappointment from my bookshelf atm) so i cannot comment on how good of an adaptation this is. however, i did enjoy it more than i thought i would. anya is amazing as always but bill nighy as mr. woodhouse is the real icon here I'm sorry. also, every single scene with knightley and churchill in it is gold lmao

josh o'connor in the carriage scene gave me a such a jumpscare i almost threw my laptop

idk what this directional style is but i might be in love with it.

such a gorgeous looking film. a feast for not just the eyes but the ears as well. slow moving in the best way possible and so calming that it could be used for meditative therapy I'm not even kidding.

couldn't fully grasp what exactly the film was trying to tell, partly because i was so lost in the beauty of it. which is great because it gives me an excuse to rewatch!

one really can't ever go wrong with satyajit ray. such a nicely-paced delightful watch. uttam kumar does an excellent job with the portrayal of a "god-like hero" reminiscent of Indian cinema. such an authentically charismatic man. (i WANT those sunglasses!!)

one of the many things i love about ray is the portrayal of women in his films. and 'nayak' is no exception. sharmila tagore as aditi sengupta is perfect and so are all the other female characters in the film. every scene with arindam and aditi is just great chemistry and banger dialogues. also i don't think any other Indian film made in the 60s looks this visually appealing.

edit: aditi putting on her glasses immediately after arindam remarks that she looks better without them was so relatable lol

i was actually going to watch cemetery of splendor but thought better to warm up with one of his older works first. idk if it was a good decision tho

for some reason i liked it a bit better than the first one?

also why would a random male family friend be anything like your dead father or husband? that was so weird like why would you scream "you're nothing like him!!" in this man's face within few hours of meeting him when he isn't even trying to act like him?
