found myself almost constantly tearing up for the whole runtime of this. an ode to making things that only you and your friends find funny because isn’t that what it’s all about? couldn’t stop thinking about shooting our dumbass directors on directors and how it makes me laugh so hard i can’t breathe every time i watch it and isn’t that the greatest way to measure the “worth” of a film?

i only began to let myself consider the possibility of making movies when i saw my friends do it and everything i make for the rest of my life will be because of them. love love love this unabashed tribute to movies and to human connection because i think that it’s at the soul of every movie ever made. at least, it’s the soul of everything i’ll ever make.

yeah this was cool but one time i did 9/11 in gta and that was way cooler

the last time i saw this in a theater, i was twelve years old. i went with my mom to see it, and while my endlessly awkward middle school self had never experienced anything close to a romantic relationship, i sobbed at the ending. i don’t think i was crying because i was sad. there was some kind of magic in the air and by god it was getting in my eyes and i couldn’t stop crying and i can’t stop crying now.
it took me nine years from that first theater viewing to realize that i’ve never found that magic in anything but movies. i love a lot of things and quite frankly won’t shut up about most of them but there’s something different. i work in tv now. i’ve made some silly little movies with my friends that might be silly but wow do i love them. because i worked on them. i made something. it’s scary and it’s overwhelming and i feel so unqualified and clumsy and naive but man if it’s your dream why not chase it! here’s to the fools! here’s to being too much and too enthusiastic and too ionate! this whole review is too much and too enthusiastic and too ionate but who even cares. if you love something then you love something and isn’t that the best feeling in the world. isn’t that magic.

the line dancing scene immediately yanked me back to my first week of college when my roommates dragged me to utah country swing dancing and i genuinely considered moving back to oregon right then and there

powerful and essential viewing. spent the whole watch fluctuating between seething with anger that we live in a world that stands idly by in the face such injustice and crying for the suffering of some of the strongest people i’ve ever seen.

a record like this will be taught in schools one day as an example of a literal genocidal occupation yet, despite winning an oscar, has been so largely ignored, as well as the evidence recorded and shared by thousands of palestinians every single day for over a year. 

why capture anything? why film the devastating, soul crushing, deliberate destruction of your people’s lives? sometimes a film touches someone. sometimes they feel something. apathy is the most evil thing in the world, and empathy is the only thing that can save us. caring about others is the most important thing you could ever do, and film is a such a powerful tool for that. i can’t really put everything i feel into words, but i know that any attempt to create a more empathetic world is a good one, and never wasted.
