Mission Impossible franchise watch: The Final Entry

Mission Impossible is a franchise that has increasingly centred on the attraction of spectacle. Plot becomes somewhat secondary, the motivation for staging heavily-marketed, death-defying stunts. And funnily enough, some of the earliest films in history showcased similar magic tricks and circus performances. With his disappearing key illusion and high-wire acts, Ethan Hunt is our modern version of this.

No Mission Impossible film has ever leant into this side of cinema more. Ethan's dive to a buried, rolling submarine filled with torpedoes made me think of Houdini's water tank, and Tom Cruise becomes a cinematic escape artist. Equally, with the bi-plane chase, I was taken back to watching wing-walking at airshows as a child.

It's good that this stuff amazed me because unfortunately The Entity lost aura in this film and that is extremely tragic

Mission Impossible franchise watch: entry 5 yeah lol I skipped a couple for time

This is where Mission Impossible begins to feel a bit messy and bloated but I forgive it because these things are side effects of the film's incredible ambition. Gabriel and The Entity have peak aura. Tom Cruise fights on top of the orient express. I'm sold

This is maybe also the funniest mission and it starts to lean more and more into the inherent silliness of the franchise - an interesting turn to take after Fallout partly succeeded by taking itself so seriously, but I love it

Mission Impossible franchise watch: entry 4

I love when a franchise establishes long-running conventions and then subverts them, shocking the audience. In this film the ending twist is "what if we DIDN'T forget about the previous mission impossible movie!"

MI: 2 and 3 made the IDF feels like a special forces unit but Ghost Protocol restores the slick and classy spy thriller feel. The prison escape, Kremlin, and Burj Khalifa scenes are all peak and I enjoy personal thoroughlines being handed to side characters instead of just Ethan. However this movie wasn't quite as good as I . The villain is forgettable, his writing thin and generic. The world-ending stakes aren't felt. Luther Stickell is in only 1 scene (the good news: Luther Stickell is in 1 scene). With this in mind, gotta give McQ the credit for the jump in quality, however this is still an exceptional live action feature debut from Brad Bird. Nice one Brad Bird

Mission Impossible franchise watch: entry 3

I saw god while watching this movie and his name is Philip Seymour Hoffman

This is great in all the ways MI 2 wasn't. It wryly makes a point of showing that the audience don't necessarily need to know or care about what the macguffin is. Instead, it focuses on bringing the characters and personal drama up a notch. I think this film is more consistent in its aesthetic objective, even though I prefer the moments at which MI and MI 2 are at their visual best. This feels more generic 2000s action, but it's closer to finding its footing and becoming the modern Mission Impossible formula.

For this to be J.J. Abrams first movie is insane what the hell happened there.

Mission Impossible is a great franchise, but such a silly and cluttered franchise too lmao. It feels like they throw random side characters at the audience like spaghetti to a wall, and keep the ones people like. Farewell to random Australian guy from the last movie. Farewell to Zhen Lei, Lawrence Fishburne, and random Irish guy from this movie. You'll be missed.

Mission Impossible franchise rewatch: entry 2 (first watch)

The highest of kino. Never has a movie been so bad and so good. Enthralled throughout. A jarring sequel, a ludicrous gear change from framed-man spy thriller to whatever the hell this is, metal gear action scenes, akira-sliding helicopters, lethal car chases as a flirting technique, a western standoff with motorbikes. Also a switch up to what feels like a bog standard plot about some guys stealing a killer virus for money and threaten to unleash it upon the world, I did not care about that at all. The characters, goofy filmmaking and aura points kept me invested. You also give this one credit for changing the franchise and paving the way for modern installments to improve the formula of big stakes and ridiculous stunts.

Drinking game: take a shot every time a character says the word bloke

Happy to report I understand this movie way better than I did when I saw it at my friend Connor's 15th birthday party. I also am just as delighted by TGV content as I was when I was 15. Another point in this movie's favour is that it does not commit the cinematic sin of exploding the train, which sadly cannot be said for Dead Reckoning.

some of it works really well for me, some of it doesn't, overall a great minimalist experiment and charming product of its time with the clammy digital video and occasional nu-metal soundtrack. I didn't get all of the plot elements in the second half and am being lazy just looking up other people's interpretations.

Gena Rowland's performance as Mabel in this film is the best thing ever, maybe. Peter Falk too. He has a look of real love in those eyes, although christ Nick could do with some help himself and it's a glaring point that his violent instability isn't treated as harshly as her unnerving unpredictability. Those kids could break your heart, even their acting is fire. Brought me near tears. I found it hard to get through and yet I knew at particular moments I was watching one of the most real, raw works of dramatic art I've ever seen, possibly ever made. What I wouldn't give to be in John Cassavetes' shoes at those moments, capturing magic on camera.

It began to feel like one of those films that would then sit on my shelf and wait in vain for a movie night that would never come. I decided to rescue it from this misery and watch it this morning. It's great - Wanda is a tragic character, flawed, almost certainly depressed without any sense of self value, lost in a country too large and industrial. It is a pessimistic film, but one that tries to help its viewers sympathise even with people whose actions they may scorn because they are so hard to understand.

Hayden's acting is actually great. Prequel obi-wan is probably at his apex here, characterisation AND beard. Modern franchise slop with their gazillion USD budgets can make graphically incredible CGI, but I don't think I AHYTHING in recent memory with the scale and ambition of Revenge of the Sith's computer generated settings. Beautiful landscapes, meticulously designed buildings and random creature and robot designs ripe to become obscure lore facts in a star wars guidebook.

Last I from Alex Garland he had lost his ion for filmmaking and wasn't gonna do it anymore. Less than a year later it feels like his next film, a concentrated and totally arduous shot at recreating wartime horror with the sensitive subject of the Iraq war, basically shadow-dropped. What did he mean by this

Detractors put down Civil War for being a cowardly and apolitical attempt at what should be an intensely political and controversial premise. Warfare is now receiving the same criticism. Genuinely what do people want from these films. Neither is apolitical. Civil War avoids detailing the specific circumstances of its conflict, because it knows that the very idea of America being at war with itself is provocative. And no Republican voter was gonna pay it any attention if it was full of overt leftist messages - instead you're left to connect the dots about where unyielding nationalism, the love of strong political measures as opposed to those weak effeminate democrats, and the prospect of a US President serving a third term, is gonna inevitably lead. And as for Warfare, it bears arguing that no film about war is apolitical. If you have an apolitical action film about war then it should be regarded as conservative media. In Warfare, a team of Navy Seals take over a random house, hold its family captive, accomplish absolutely nothing, and spend the rest of the movie repeatedly "showing force" until they can evacuate, leaving dead, wounded, and one homeless, traumatised family in their wake. Golly gee I wonder what this movie could possibly be trying to tell us about the Iraq war

Leave Alex Garland alone. He can cook.

most of these 5 stars are for the play really, the burden of being an adaptation, but like I wouldn't fault this version at all. If anything I do prefer Alastair Sim's wide-eyed 1954 portrayal of the spooky inspector and think it conveys how something is 'off' and supernatural about him. But David Thewlis' portrayal emphasises the scathing judgement of the adaptation even more. It feels genuinely imbued with anger and regret.

this was the first thing I saw kyle soller in and I think it coded him as aristocratic english in my head, so when he appeared in andor and started sounding like JD Vance much confusion ensued

Even my own cinema-loving dad told me this was a boring 2-and-a-half-hour story that just happens to have beautiful images. I didn't find this to be the case at all - I was completely invested in the story.

I've been on a real big sci-fi city kick recently, having read Foundation by Isaac Asimov (Trantor) and watched The Phantom Menace (Coruscant) so this also helped to satisfy my craving for cool buildings. I love the idea of using a city as an allegory for class division and the alienation of labour, with the surface appearing luxurious and prosperous (as does the appearance of capitalist society), yet actually disguising the poverty and neglect buried deep underground. You could trace this back to H.G. Well's The Time Machine but in Metropolis, it is powerfully realised on the screen.

In other thoughts, so much of this film is Andor-coded, it is great to see that the #AndorSweep has spread so far as to affect 1920s German expressionist cinema

Steven Soderbergh has style. Like its characters, this film radiates assured, impeccable mastery. It's also mega sexy and surprisingly, beautifully romantic. All the major players are bitingly witty, and I love to see that David Koepp can still write a sharp and investing script, ahead of his writing on Spielberg's next UFO film 'The Dish' which I'm absolutely buzzing about.

I honestly really enjoyed Rio Grande, one of my favourite Ford films that I've seen. Absolutely riveted by the scene where new army recruits ride the horses 'Roman style' - standing upright - and all filmed for real! I was also very pulled in by the tense family drama with excellent dialogue. I even enjoyed the buffoonish and drink-prone Irish American Pincannon, as much as he's a caricature I would go for a pint with him myself. Where the film has aged is obviously in the depiction of native americans as barbaric aggressors as opposed to the brotherly and civil U.S. army, but enough has been said about that by people with more knowledge about it than me!!

Lotsa people been giving this 4 star reviews so here is another one. This is a good movie and worth a watch. A good time at da movies as they say. Its another Bong classic, this time like a sillier and stranger version of Snowpiercer. I'll always turn out for new sci-fi cinema and I appreciate the fresh turn of something that's much more madcap and caricatured, like a very long and elaborate political cartoon.

I kinda wonder if every character feeling like they're out of a comedy does them a slight disservice - their faults aren't treated with much sincerity, we don't really understand them very much as people. Steven Yeun and Naomi Ackie's characters for example. I also don't quite know what the ending scene was all about, although I don't dislike it.

Glad this one finally made the big screen, because I there being doubt about it for a while. Anyway I especially enjoyed watching Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo having fun with their roles and I'm excited to see what Bong Joon Ho cooks up next!

Next in the mgs3 watchlist, probably the first Toho film I've watched that doesn't feature Godzilla in it. This movie did what I can only describe as edging me about the outbreak of nuclear war. It's basically the titular subject matter and it keeps ALMOST happening by accident. This kinda just feels like padding while we wait for the actual attack, an unfortunate byproduct of the sacred scriptwriting rule that you can't have much more runtime after all your characters die in the nuclear fires.

Despite the structural issues, length, confusing pseudo-politics and some of the worst english-language white boy acting I've seen in a minute (sorry guys), the models and special effects used in the film are very impressive and I was moved by the story of an ordinary Tokyo family, love repeating across generations and performed with warmth. It's a shame this film isn't more accessible to watch in good quality. No one could argue with its intentions, to unsettle our dependence on technology, our arrogance, our confidence in our dominion over our own lives.

Extremely moving film, I love how the age of time was paced - the slow, inevitable march towards grief and acceptance. Fernando Torres' portrayal of steely determination to keep living and giving happiness to those around her in spite of tragedy - so good. I have seen that determination in real people before, my own granny for example, and it never fails to touch and amaze me.

In metal gear solid 3 you can put on a "croc cap" which just gives you the head of a crocodile and then you get told about this film, which is why I watched it

The beginning of this film is way more investing than it has any right to be, for a film about people turning into alligators. I really enjoyed so much of it but some bad shot choice and a frustrating ending brought it down for me. I still love discovering these random 50s movies I would never have otherwise watched though. When I picked up the croc cap in metal gear I never knew a whole historic movie experience would come with it 💚💚💚

Really hit me. Paul Laverty is amazing for balancing an informative overview of large-scale injustices with a very personal and highly specific plot line. The film crew telling a story of indigenous resistance while trying to avoid a parallel tale unfolding around them was another layer of meta commentary that I haven't seen in his other films. Today, the enemy of the people aren't military empires, they're corporations, and an enforced sense of normalcy at any cost.

A 3.5 hour runtime has never felt so fast!

I love transitional periods in history. When one era has been torn down, and the next is yet to be built. In post-war America, The Brutalist is set in one of those periods. And of course there is no better choice of subject than an architect channelling his trauma into creations like no one has ever seen.

Unfortunately, besides a couple other issues with characters left on the sidelines, I was really taken out of the film by the knowledge that AI was used as part of the production. If I had not read about this beforehand, I would never have noticed. But that's what concerns me most - the idea that this environmentally destructive, anti-human technology could be taking away the jobs of visual artists, or shaping an actor's performance in hopes of Oscar gold without us even knowing it.

I love doing these double bills of am old movie followed by its remake. Recently I watched the 1953 War of the Worlds followed by Spielberg's remake. Like the 2005 remake, this modern blockbuster rendition of The Day The Earth Stood Still has a good raison d'être besides making lots of money: it feels it can use the same story to express different, contemporary fears - in this case, global warming. Unlike Spielberg's War of the Worlds however, this one doesn't manage to be better than its source material.

I first watched this movie at my friend Lewis' birthday party when I was probably like 9 or something. I was a sensitive soul and came home pale as a sheet, telling my parents of giant robots and matter-eating bugs etc etc. Some of the fantastic images of this movie have formed powerful, formidable memories in my head over the years, and when I've tried thinking of how I might do my own alien story, I've found that this ranks among my biggest influences. I had a blast watching it today and have to give it credit!!

Unfortunately when the movie ended this time round I just thought the environmentalism was too lightly skipped over - it's mostly lip service - and I am NOT convinced that humanity would actually change after the events of the film. You gotta round us up and say "behave yourselves or we will blow up your planet", that always works.

Jacob definitely up there with most annoying small children ever, I'm sorry I know I'm supposed to feel bad for him because his dad died but that kid is a menace for most of the movie. I also have no idea who John Cleese's character is or why exactly Klaatu goes to see him for 2 minutes, other than that it's a major plot point in the 1951 film.

Anyway BUG TIME 🐛🪲🐞🐜🐝🪳🦟🪰

Of the '50s sci-fi classics I've been paying due attention to recently, this has so far been the best. Thrilling stuff. Rope in the audience with this here poster promising scantily-clad women and invading alien monsters, only to do a complete bait and switch, holding a mirror up to people who fear and hate what they don't understand. Do you ever fall in love with a film long before you watch it? I watched a video essay on Perfect Blue as a teenager. I had stills from it saved on my school macbook. I built it up in my mind as a film I knew I would enjoy so much that I put off watching it until "the right moment". Don't do this. It's been years.

I guess tonight was the right moment. I emerged from the film in a little bit of shock, having been immersed completely in Satoshi Kon's reality-defying world (animation is so much better for this feeling as you get to live within an art style of the filmmakers' choice for a while). Thanks to the many "it was all a dream" moments, themselves ambiguous, plot is superseded by disorientation and pure experience.

Made in a time of utopian longings for the Internet and worldwide communication, Perfect Blue predicts the accompanying darkness. Incredibly relevant in its depiction of manufactured personas and parasocial celebrity relationships, it feels ahead of its time (while still aesthetically at home in the fuzzy, warm quality of 90s cel-drawn anime).

I love when films are like dreams - even if this is a scary one.

This made me extremely uncomfy so I guess it did exactly what it was supposed to do!! The perfect way to express what horror can lie behind beauty, especially in the world of art. Borrows from other films yet still feels like it wrote the textbook for psychological horror about obsession and perfection. The most discomforting part is its incredible pessimism.

I find myself willing to get so much more invested in movies that have clearly done their research, involved consultants to a high degree, feature technical dialogue seemingly unrelated to story - many might find the laborious procedural and scientific detail in Shin Godzilla to be tedious, but I love it so much and it makes the film. An incredibly authentic world of banal beaucracy meets an incomprehensible monster of cosmic horror.

I was fully ready to give the movie 5 stars on a rewatch but the transitional period into the final act of the film is so much longer and drags much more than I . I've discovered there are two different cuts and I probably watched the shorter one originally.

I woke up at 7 this morning, 2 hours before my alarm, and couldn't get back to sleep. What is the answer to this problem? Random bullshit 1950s b-movie about a giant composited spider!

This is a strange, beautiful little film. Some of the dialogue made me laugh because it can be really bad but I sensed genuine love and sincerity behind each line and it made it more endearing. The spider screams constantly for no reason and scuttles around kicking people (and occasionally draining all fluid from their bodies which was a bit scarier). The whole thing is incredibly cliché but there's no denying, I enjoyed it all the way through. I think I said "oh no they're going towards the spider" out loud at one point and was immediately confused at myself.

Brought up some fond memories of Stephen King's IT (1950s, smalltown America, school kids exploring a cave with a giant spider in it, etc)

Sorry to the actor who played Joe but he is convincing NO ONE that he belongs in a high school
