After rewatching every single Mission: Impossible film in the last 7 days, I still hold firm that this one is the best one. But now, I think it has taken an even bigger lead over the previous films which I still consider to be among the greatest actions films of all time. This one is my favorite because I think it balances all of the tones from the last 3 films so expertly. It has the silly insanity of Ghost Protocol, it has the spy paranoia of Rogue Nation and the original film (there are many homages to De Palma's film in this and it rocks) and it has the intensity and utterly baffling stunt showcases of Fallout. Tom Cruise is clearly trying to die in the most glorious way possible. There is a sense of hopelessness that permeates the film, it really feels like the IMF is hanging by a thread, the whole world on the brink. It adds so much tension to the already insanely tense setpieces, the chase in the airport, the Rome car chase, the Entity party, and especially the roughly 45 minute train sequence, which in my humble opinion, is currently one of the greatest action setpieces ever put to screen. The whole cast is all giving it their all, the ing performances are especially great here. For such a huge cast, there is no weak link. Cary Elwes and Henry Czerny are going blow for blow on best line reads in the film, but so much energy comes from Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Esai Morales, and Vanessa Kirby. Pom Klementieff is a highlight of the action scenes she is a part of. And ofc Shea Whigham is hilarious here with the best line in the movie. The direction here is the best in the series, McQ does such a wonderful job of making this the most dynamic looking M:I film yet. The colors pop, the camera is MOVING, and there is never a dull visual throughout the near 3 hour runtime. This was my favorite upon my first watch and it remains my favorite as of now. Tomorrow I trust Ethan Hunt one last time and watch The Final Reckoning. Im gonna be so sad for this series Ive had all my life end. Grew up with these, my favorite movie series. It will end with a bang im sure. Glory to the IMF!

Plays like a darker B-side to Chungking Express but remains just as beautiful. Loved the visuals especially in this one. Its so GREEN. For the Real Yearners. I need to lock in on Wong Kar-wai's filmography he is looking like an instant favorite of mine.

"I'm jumping out a window!"

Good argument to be made this is the best film ever made, and yet somehow the next one is even better. As if Rogue Nation wasnt already perfect, McQ & Cruise & Co found a way to improve on virtually every level while also making this one visually distinct from the last one. Cold and visceral, but enough warmth for the characters and writing to shine through. This is the one I have seen the most because it has such an oddly cozy vibe and it was my favorite in the years leading up to Dead Reckoning, so naturally I had it on repeat. Some of the most tense and well-executed action of all time. The helicopter sequence is one of my favs in the franchise and now that I own the blu-ray I got to see it with the expanded aspect ratio. What stands out the most for me here is oddly the score. Lorne Balfe is a godsend, but the scores have always been amazing in this series, but my god it adds so much to this one. Cruise and Cavill god mode here. Benji, Luther, and Ilsa are so good in this one. So fun having Julia come back for this one to raise the stakes even higher just when you think we have reached the max. Wonderful ending. I see why this one is the fan favorite, but my heart still belongs to Dead Reckoning as of now. Excited to rewatch tmrw!

I think i pinpointed why i love this monstrosity. I find 2nd hand embarrassment so funny. I love Impractical Jokers for example. A show dedicated to 4 guys embarrassing themselves publically for our entertainment. And thats what The Weeknd did here. Truly embarrassing stuff. Trey Edward Shults should just direct music videos instead he aint built for this. Funniest movie of the year i love it.

Punching myself for not watching Wong Kar-wai's films sooner. What an incredible introduction to him, this was singular. With its dual structure in halves it really shows the full spectrum of love and loss. Faye Wong and Tony Leung are phenomenal. Such a dreamlike quality that permeates the film. Columned-coded movie for sure. And just when you thought the soundtrack couldnt get any better it hits you with a cover of Dreams by The Cranberries.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Are you okay to drive? A minute ago you were dead."

"What are you talking about?"

As much as I love this series and especially Ghost Protocol, this is the film which shifts things into high gear. Christopher McQuarrie came in and its not hard to see why they let him be the first and only director to make multiple Mission: Impossible films. His direction is outstanding, especially in the setpieces. The editing is notably amazing here too. The Opera scene, the car/bike chase, the final confrontation with Lane, all edited to perfect for maximum tension and thrills. Looks stunning and its so fun seeing how McQuarrie has a clear visual throughline while also having each of his M:I films look unique enough to stand out. I somehow always forget how funny this one is. Would be the best movie in any other franchise, but here its barely Top 3 for me as of now. Glory to Benji Dunn. Glory to Luther Stickell. Glory to Ilsa Faust. Glory to Ethan Hunt. Glory to the IMF. And Alex Baldwin's character says it best:

"Hunt is uniquely trained and highly motivated - a specialist without equal - immune to any countermeasures. There is no secret he cannot extract, no security he cannot breach, no person he cannot become. He has most likely anticipated this very conversation and is waiting to strike in whatever direction we move. Sir, Hunt is the living manifestation of destiny - and he has made you his mission."

Extremely gnarly with no pulled punches. This film has such an evil presence from the get-go. Even before the studio logos hit you already are hit with disturbing imagery that makes you feel gross and unsafe. Sally Hawkins is demented here, absolutely incredible performance that really displays her range. The manipulation on display is such a gross use of power it is beyond disturbing. Deeply upsetting, id even go so far as to say this is an evil film. Like it feels like it haunted me like im gonna die in 7 days now type shit. Bone-chilling. The premise may not be quite as inventive as the Phillipou's previous film, Talk to Me, but everything else is improved here. A couple scenes in here had me squinting and looking away and i have a high tolerance for stuff like this. And this is all made extra scary by the fact they never really explain how tf Sally Hawkins' character has access to this information. The audience is left in the dark on a lot of the evil shit which just makes it all the more terrifying. A true heater, i will now watch anything and everything the Phillipou's put in theaters after this incredible sophomore feature.

Like every other Malick I have seen (only 3 left to go now) it is utterly entrancing in its visual presentation, but this was the first one from him that simply did not click with me. I expected this to Really Work for me since I was born in the midwest and grew up there, but I think beyond the images that really hit it home for me, I really lacked a connection to the characters and themes which is a first for a Malick film in my journey. Really only in love with the cinematography, especially in how Malick continually evolves his presentation while firmly staying rooted in his sensibilities. Too disted for me too i think idk. Not a bad film, but disappointing for me who has loved ever Malick film up to this point.

I nortoriously do not really care for Tim Burton films, so im very happy to have found another one I really enjoyed! Movies about movies are a very easy way to get me to like them and this was really heartfelt in a way I did not expect. Very empathetic and full of exuberance. It doesnt matter how people receive your art if you loved making it, love and respect for the craft is the most important part most of the time. Martin Landau is astonishing here. Lovely black and white photography! Orson Welles scene by far the best part.

Really hate reviewing random shit in place of a tv show but i reviewed S1 so why not do S2. Top 3 Star Wars, one of my favorite tv shows even. Makes Rogue One even sadder somehow. Unbelievable this exists at all, a true modern miracle. Glory to Tony Gilroy!

Post-war nuclear paranoia made tangible. The fear of the unstoppable. Overwhelming odds, overwhelming destruction. But we can fight it, together. Absolutely insane the level of craftsmanship on display here. Everything fits together perfectly. Incredible sense of scale which adds such a gravity to the film. The way shadows are cast makes them feel so sinister, impending, horrifying. I watched this for the first time when I was younger than 10 and forgot so much, im just gonna count this as my first watch since i did not Get It when i was that young. But i did like it back then, now i adore it.

"Your line's not long enough!"

I am so deeply attached to this film because its the one I watched the most growing up along with the original. I really did grow up on these movies and this was my favorite one for what felt like a long time but was really just like 3-4 years until Rogue Nation released. This one still feels the silliest to me in the best ways possible. The gadgets dont work half the time, they have to improvise, and everyone says the funniest lines. Closest they have gotten to a live-action cartoon and thats thanks to Brad Bird who had only directed animated films up to this point. Perfect mix of spy antics and action, very heartfelt. The Burj Khalifa bit and the entire Dubai sequence as a whole is some of the best blockbuster filmmaking ever put to screen. Truly astonishing. Love love love this movie, I could watch it on repeat until the day I die. It is mindboggling the next 3 (and hopefully The Final Reckoning) are somehow better than this one, despite Ghost Protocol already being a modern blockbuster masterpiece. Smiled the whole time!

Great movie that rocks. Kind of hard to hate on this when it has two of the greatest actoes to ever live going blow for blow. Phillip Seymour Hoffman i miss you so much. This one strikes a better balance between the action and the spy tension compared to the last one and I vibe with it a bit more since the story is far more personal. Love me an aggressively blue movie and this one really scratches that itch. This series really is amazing because this one is great and yet every single film that came after totally blows this one out of the water. And I have been saying it since the first teaser for The Final Reckoning, but my theory that the Rabbit's Foot is The Entity is holding firm.

"It's interesting - I used to have this professor at Oxford, okay? Doctor Wickham, his name was and he was, like, this massive fat guy, you know? Huge, big guy. We used to call him - you know, well, I won't tell you what we used to call him, but he taught biomolecular kinetics and cellular dynamics. And he used to sort of scare the underclassmen with this story about how the world would eventually be eviscerated by technology. You see, it was inevitable that a compound would be created which he referred to as the 'Anti-God'. It was like an accelerated mutator or sort of, you know, like a, an unstoppable force of destructive power, that would just lay waste to everything - to buildings and parks and streets and children and ice cream parlors, you know? So whenever I see, like, a rogue organization willing to spend this amount of money on a mystery tech, I always assume... it's the Anti-God. End-of-the-world kinda stuff, you know... But no, I don't have any idea what it is. I was just speculating."

Crazy watching the final arc of Andor then immediately throwing this on, even if its what Tony Gilroy intended. Whole cast is boring except for Cassian, who is now far and away the best part of the movie, obviously. The whole surrounding context somehow makes this film even sadder. Far too many modern blockbuster-isms for my liking, but it looks and sounds genuinely phenomenal. One of my favorite 3rd acts and endings ever really because deep down im a Star Wars nerd. Pretty good, albeit inconsistent film. High highs and low lows. Seriously why the fuck do the dudes from the Mos Eisley cantina show up in this, they might be a contender for most egregious Glup Shitto in all of Star Wars.

"You mean it'll be difficult?"

"Well, this is not mission: difficult, Mr. Hunt, it's mission: impossible. Difficult should be a walk in the park for you."

I think this movie looks amazing most of the time, but it really sticks out like a sore thumb in the franchise. Fun to see it has shooters, but I am not one of them. Feels far more James Bond than Ethan Hunt, but not in a good way especially since this one is pretty misogynistic. 3rd Act action goes crazy, so many hype moments, so much aura. Least engaging plot, least interesting characters (Ethan doesnt feel like Ethan in this one), but at the end of the day I am charmed by this one. There is no bad Mission: Impossible film, but this one is easily my least favorite.

Unforgettable. Every single choice made here feels tailor-made to make me laugh. I had a hell of a time watching this in theaters. Funniest movie of the year entirely unintentionally. Sorta mindboggling this even exists? Trey Edward Shults putting up Lebron numbers when it comes to be an untalented hack and I have only seen two of his films now. Its like they captured lightning in a bottle for me specifically. Genuinely so hard to contain my laughter in the silent theater. The music did go crazy because it was by The Weeknd and Daniel Lopatin (who did the score for Uncut Gems, which also starred The Weeknd playing himself and getting upset in the middle of performing in front of a bunch of strobe lights and lasers)

I always love revisiting this one because its fun to see how far this series blossomed in the last 30 years. De Palma goes god mode directing here, the palpable paranoia, the dutch angles and split diopter shots, its all so vivid. Langley heist still one of the best scenes in the franchise. All around amazing, Ethan Hunt is my GOAT

I enjoy these silly little movies, but its only in the 5th one where they feel like Characters. Luckily, its the same here! Some of the best deaths and tension. The misdirects were very funny. Tony Todd GOAT best scene in the film RIP. Looks just goofy enough. You can really feel this one is 110mins though, unlike the ~90min standard for the rest of the franchise. I hope they keep making more of these, ill see 'em!

Far and away the best one. Actually great tension throughout and its like the first time everyone felt like Characters. What a fantastic ending, thats some good shit. Unbelievably hilarious. Very funny how my favorite scene in this franchise is three people sitting at a table and talking about death. That restaurant scene is kinda unreal, like its not some masterful scene, but its funny a scene That Good is in a franchise like this. I like these movies, dont love them. This one rocks though.

Revelatory on the big screen. Epic by every stretch of the word. Ridley Scott's most underrated film. Massive.

Another heater from Cronenberg. Quite chilling, but I was really surprised at just how quiet and somber this is for most of its runtime. Very contemplative on death, and thus, life itself. Incredible ending. Maybe my favorite Christopher Walken performance?

"THE ICE IS GONNA BREAK!"

What a crazy little movie lol. Once again, Boyle is just such an interesting filmmaker formally that even this film, which im not too big on, is still something special. Kind of unhinged filmmaking, fullt commits to the insanity of the story in a very tangible way. Like maybe half of everything worked for me, but hey, very glad I watched this one. Beautifully dated, time capsule type film.

Kinda mindboggling how boring this was. So loosely strung together that it literally felt like watching a bunch of unrelated FD deaths in a YouTube compilation. And the deaths all sucked, the CGI was NOT working here. I liked when the theater exploded tho I think if I saw this when it first released id be begging for the same thing to happen to me.

3rd in a row where I have the exact same thoughts. Opening rocked, finale was a bit weak compared to the first two. I like these goofy ass deaths. I need MORE people to get completely pancaked by falling objects. This didnt help my fear of roller coasters...

God this movie is so gorgeous. Loved how its super normal but has one surreal dream sequence. Really interesting to see how the allure of nationalism and pride can distract us. Sometimes taking the easy way out leads to the hardest challenges later down the line. Also hard to pull off a good use of Moonlight Sonata nowadays.

I love insane movies like this. So campy and fun! Looks great and has some mindblowing practical effects. Laughed my head off!

Massive film that needed more Peter O'Toole. Insanely gorgeous cinematography, sets, and costumes go so far in crafting this. Joan Chen steals every scene she is in here. Feels exactly like the type of film the Academy would go crazy for, so makes sense it swept that year. Score goes crazy. Loved the structure.

Peaked way too hard with the opening carnage but I basically feel the same way I did about the first one. Deaths a little better in this one so ig I prefer it but its literally the same thing, but funnier. Hilarious ending

Joe Wright I fw you heavy. Loved how this committed to an idea so fully it felt like something I had never seen before. Visually stunning, so often caught myself not breathing. Keira Knightley is amazing. Great flick to watch with my mom, one of her favs!

Silly stupid little movie that makes me laugh. But its genuinely pretty good during the scenes where it just turns into Oliver Stone's JFK

Genius to make a coming-of-age film, so often filled with friends and family, good times and bad, and so much to do. But here, there is nothing to do. They look for an escape. So many shots, especially establishing shots, feel so barren and bleak. The town is near empty, lifeless, and dying. There isnt even color. Beautifully photographed sadness. All of the characters are desperately trying to find something to give them purpose, whether it be in the town or away from it, but it leads them right back to where they started in a way.

Some of the greatest shadows ive seen in a while. This was my first experience with this Shakespeare play so it was really fun being surprised by the plot lol. Im finally getting around to the rest of Welles filmography and he is becoming one of my favs concerningly fast

"Everybody is somebody's fool."

For the first 80 minutes I was ready to call this a masterpiece, i mean, it has eveything you could want from a noir. The mystery is captivating, the visuals are phenomenally atmospheric and moody, and its carried by two incredible leads performances in Hayworth and Welles (doing a hilarious Irish accent, but it works) But in its closing minutes it goes absolutely gonzo-insane god mode with some of the finest formal work not just of the era, but any time. A good ending can make up for a bad film, a bad ending can make a good film mediocre. A fantastic ending can make a masterpiece one of my all time favorites. I truly cant decide if this is better than Citizen Kane or not. Both quintessential pictures that more than hold up today. I am on a crazy good film streak rn wow.

Quite possibly the best looking movie ever made. The distillation and visualization of love. You can literally see it on screen. Masterful, one of Coppola's best!

Absolutely and unequivocally massive. Brilliant direction from Kathryn Bigelow with a borderline prophetic story and script from James Cameron create something one-of-a-kind. Truly so many moments that will be seared into my brain forever, a true feat of filmmaking. Movies are the best thing ever. Instant favorite of mine!

Really dug the concept and story, plenty of ideas to chew on, but I really did not care for the execution. Beyond the well done gross effects, its quite mundane. Fun to see Cronenberg's first feature, he has improved so much.

Was gonna give this an extra half star because Josh Hartnett is delivering an incredibly fun and unhinged performance but then the ending was so unbelievably rage-inducing that im taking it back. If you liked Bullet Train, you will probably like this a lot less. If you disliked Bullet Train, you will despise this movie with every fiber of your being.

This was the last Nolan film I had left to see and it did not disappoint. I hold the very boring opinion that he is one of the very best directors working today and has multiple films that will be considered classics in the future. Ive always had s soft spot for his smaller scale film, especially The Prestige and Insomnia definitely scratched that itch, even though it has a very by-the-numbers mystery to it. Pacino and Swank are great, but Williams steals every scene and really channels a performance and a side from him I hadnt seen before. Loved the atmosphere in this one and the 3rd act had some truly amazing direction and editing. Probably my least favorite feature film from Nolan, but like, by default, since its the only one I have rated below a 4/5.

All the ideas are clearly here and you can see Cronenberg's skill behind the camera with some great compositions and blocking, but it is rather aimless with almost exclusively voice-over narration explaining everything. For an early film, its quite rich in worldbuilding and ideas, with a gross atmosphere, but probably more interesting in the context of a filmography than on its own.

Gorgeously shot, i mean of course its well directed and well shot, its Ridley Scott, but it just draws out everything too much. Ik its not a fair fight but the Hannibal tv show simply does this storyline better in every way + has Will Graham my GOAT. That tv show lowkey ruined these movies for me (except for Silence of the Lambs ofc)

Seeing this in theaters really made me realize how stunning this collection of extremely silly gags is. Truly the perfect joke.

Honestly shocked this film isnt talked about far more often. Feels like a cornerstone of so much that was popular at the time and even still today. Similar conventions and themes as popular and awarded films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Shutter Island with the thematic weight from the original The Exorcist film, as well as William Peter Blatty's own The Exorcist III. Extremely poignant take on faith and its power and motivation. Breakdown of insanity to its purest form. Oh and its mostly set in a cool ass castle. Dripping with a palpable atmosphere and eerieness, its a truly stunning picture. Blatty's sense of spacial awareness and lighting really bolsters his incredible compositions in this film. Idk how to describe it but it kind of felt like watching a chess master play a game, if that even makes sense idk. Incredible incredible incredible idk if i prefer this or The Exorcist III but I know for sure Blatty is one of my favorite directors, i wish he made more films!

Watching The Keep and this back to back really cemented the fact I prefer Mann shooting on film, but he is, in many ways, a master of shooting digitally. Really expands his formalism in a lot of interesting ways. Every film he has done is beyond stunning, just prefer the celluoid ig. This one particularly has such a palpable sense of claustrophobia. Extremely cool ofc. The scene in the movie theater with the Public Enemy Number One ad is one of Mann's best scenes probably. Some incredible shootouts!

This movie makes no fucking sense but it is seriously so gorgeous with an incredible score that it literally doesnt matter. Feels immensely disted, tied together like a memory of a dream, just so odd. Makes sense since this is a little over 90 minutes, but Mann originally turned in an over 180 minute first cut. That version would have been the best movie ever made probably, but as it stands now, its still really good. Probably my least favorite Mann tho unfortunately.

Immaculate vibes, direction, and lead performance with a perfect ending. Loved his little dance walking back up the street. Gorgeous. Philip Marlowe lights matches in ways I didnt even know were possible he lowkey broke the laws of thermodynamics.

Unreal and the funniest movie ever maybe

They actually made another good movie. Based on the creative team and crew for this film I already had some hope, but this was a lot better than I expected. Genuine and raw in a lot of key ways, it didnt pull too many punches. Feels a lot smaller scale and personal, which is what I feel like the MCU is lacking right now. Every film has to be some Event, when really you just need a good story and compelling characters. There is a nice fluidity to the visuals and there is far more intention behind the cinematography here than previous MCU ventures. With this, there is also some fantastic fight scenes. Well choreographed and shot in a way that makes it feel real. It helps its not just CGI masses shooting lasers at each other, but rather more hand-to-hand combat. Im glad they ed these guys are HEROES. THEY SAVE PEOPLE!! They actually save civilians in this one which was really fun. I think the strongest aspect of this film is the way in which it tackles mental health and struggles. It feels really personal and visualizes these concepts in a very unique way that makes for a killer 3rd Act. One of the best 3rd Acts I have seen in a CBM in a hot minute. It just felt fresh. Florence Pugh and Lewis Pullman kill it here, kinda blown away. I need more Bob!

Much more loose and flowing than I expected. Abandons a typical plot structure and instead focuses on a more episodic narrative that all connect in some way, even if it is just thematically at times. It makes the film seem like it is flying by and you really feel the weight of time ing. Some sections do not even have Andrei Rublev in them. Really does feel like witnessing an entire tumultuous life. Needless to say, but this film is formally flawless. Tarkovsky's slower approach allowed for rumination and thoughtfulness. Truly massive movie, truly an Epic.

All of my absolute favorite films in one ever-shifting list. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King represents the entire trilogy for this list, its cleaner that way.
