I picked this up on sale after reading the synopsis and figuring my wife would like a Gothic horror with a slight romantic subplot starring Eric Stoltz and Jennifer Jason Leigh set in the swamps of Louisiana and sure enough I was right.

Mia Goth was fantastic in this and this felt like a vehicle for her. This is very different from X both aesthetically and tonally. Whereas X was channelling the 70s with the Tobe Hooper film parallels and porno plot, this feels to be a callback to 30s and 50s cinema with the adoration that Pearl has for silent films in addition to the typography and opening crawl.
