Source Code is easily 2011’s hidden gems but flawed. Duncan Jones (director of Moon which I highly recommend watching) created a formula so straight forward, obvious and catchy if treated Groundhogs Day meets Murder on the Orient Express. Source Code is far from perfect respecting Groundhog’s Day traditional premise, Source Code goes behind the east trial. Although Moon is Duncan Jones’s influential science fiction movies, Source Code tells a modern day Groundhog Day original script told with the perspective of intense moments not comedy. I was put off when Duncan Jones spins Groundhog Day’s premise pretty close to the chest developing characters, setting, neat visuals and stopping a criminal about to blow up a train reminded me of Speed (1994). Not saying Source Code is the worst film I’ve ever seen the visual effects, formulaic plot, interesting set-ups and stakes and Duncan Jone’s direction is awesome. Jake Gyllenhaal honestly doesn’t give anything too special to the table but develops he’s character horribly and gets over with it.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) a helicopter pilot participates in a secret government facility we’re they place him inside a moving train about to explode. Colter Stevens goes so far stopping the train from exploding, sometimes Stevens fails and fails not playing he’s character correctly with Duncan Jone’s source material takes me off the intense experience. Duncan Jones doesn’t do anything worthwhile, groundbreaking or plays off Groundhog’s Day naturally. The movie is filled with stupid plot holes, terrible acting especially from Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga there characters we’re one dimensional and forgettable. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers over dramatic dialogue towards he’s character and situation repeating the same day over and over again.
I’ve seen Duncan Jones achieve science fiction fantasies time and time again developing interesting stories to keep audience on a surface level Christopher Nolan portal of science fiction. Source Code neither succeeds at those elements, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a over dramatic helicopter pilot figuring out which train bomber is about to blow up the moving train. Also Jake Gyllenhaal plays two different characters both inside time loops and reality. First Jake Gyllenhaal plays Colter Stevens and in the time loop controlled by Colleen Goodwin, He plays Sean Fentress. Changing lanes here, Source Code still has great action sequences, the cinematography was awful at times. The movie is character driven substance only expressing how much entertaining, well-written or abstract Source Code can beat with original premise.
Michelle Monaghan’s character is not relatable but plays a love interest for Sean Fentresss. I did not enjoy Michelle Monaghan’s terrible dialogue delivery and made me want to shut off the TV and never see Source Code again. The train itself obviously is rendered with CGI because believe it or not, Duncan Jones puts time and effort convincing audience visual effects push limits with storytelling or a plot device. Visual effects and practical effects is Duncan Jone’s trademark making films. Every single visual effects, CGI or practical effects used in Source Code pandering scenes my experience lingers realism upon first viewing because the train isn’t believable, realistic or the poorly written script caused Source Code to fail at extreme.
In conclusion Source Code still gathers a original premise, poorly written script, Jake Gyllenhaal’s terrible acting makes twice he’s character more forgettable then other characters he plays normally.I can understand people love Source Code, But isn’t a groundbreaking Duncan Jones success of a groundhog day spectator. Duncan Jones should’ve left Groundhog’s Day alone because I guess many movies out there Hollywood panders follows trends while the other artistic intent movies get abused and shoved against waterfalls. I am sorry I didn’t enjoy Source Code, because the movie only relates on the corny script instead building tension, I guess movies these days get irritating, loud, noisy steeling piles of world trend garbage that Source Code is up there. For the time being Source Code remains artificial, visually stunning beat drop of Groundhog’s Day material. For me Moon worked 100% for me not Source Code for the movie’s fitting title.
