Gladiator II

2024

★½

'Gladiator 2' fails miserably as a legacy sequel, lazily cashing in on the original film's glory without capturing any of its heart or depth. The screenplay is clunky, uninspired, and woefully underdeveloped. It shamelessly pulls lines from the original film, but rather than invoking emotion, they fall flat, devoid of the weight they carried the first time around. The plot is feeble, trudging through familiar beats without adding anything fresh or meaningful. The stakes feel minimal with a major lack of tension and emotional investment. It’s a story that could’ve been exciting, but the weak, lifeless screenplay never lets it soar, making it a clear missed opportunity. Paul Mescal is also dreadfully miscast. Despite his acting talent, he lacks the presence and allure that a role of this size demands. On the flip side, Denzel Washington manages to inject some life into it, if only due to his sheer presence dwarfing the rest of the cast. He commands each scene, exuding authority in a way most could only dream of. But let’s face it, this was a bad idea. This movie has one of the worst cases of sequel-itis I have ever seen and what's worse is it doesn’t even try to justify its existence. It's just a bland, uninspired mess that leaves you wondering why it even exists in the first place. Do better, Ridley. I know you can.
