The Great Ziegfeld

1936

★★★ Watched

That Ziegfeld guy sounds like a piece of work. William Powell's charm makes him amusing and tolerable, but I can't say he's likable. The opulence though! There are some truly jaw-dropping sets and costumes in this 3-hour Depression-era best picture winning barely-a-biopic, and allegedly about 50 pounds of silver sequins. Luise Rainer gives a somewhat affecting performance, and Myrna Loy is a small breath of fresh air two thirds of the way into the proceedings, although I think my favorite…

A Dancer's World

Love that this was made by my local PBS station. Lovely little short dance documentary in which Martha Graham narrates poetic wisdom and shows off her company dancers, a reasonably diverse group for 1957, and all very talented. The Martha Graham style is so beautifully controlled, I've taken a couple Graham style classes and there's so much core needed to do those Graham contractions. Felt very familiar as it's clear how much influence Graham's philosophy had on my own dance…

White Christmas

Got to watch my fave on the big screen for its 70th anniversary!! I'm really not a huge holiday movie rewatcher, I do just a select few each year, but it's truly not Christmas unless I've watched White Christmas. Being in a crowd of my people, all laughing together at iconic lines like "Mutual, I'm sure" filled me with the spirit of the season. Barrie Chase is still kicking at age 91 and I want to send her fan mail!!…

We've arrived...with this I have watched my 1,000th film! Not that the count is wholly precise, especially depending on how you feel about including short films, but I've been keeping track for about 10 years on IMDb, 4 years on letterboxd, and a lifetime of saving movie tickets, so I'd say the numbers are fairly accurate. Anyway, in anticipation of this milestone, I was considering what film I wanted my # 1000 to be, and had settled on the Godfather…

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion

1997

★★★★ Liked Watched

I had my 10 year high school reunion on Sunday and this was the perfect movie to watch beforehand with my high school best friend. Like Romy and Michele, we weren't in the cool or popular groups but had fun and did our thing, have stayed close with each other but don't actively keep in touch with anyone else from our class, and our names even have a similar sound (Chloe and Danielle). It's possible neither of us would have…

An American in Paris

Sure the plot might have had the potential to go somewhere more interesting, Lise as a character isn’t quite developed enough to make the romance very believable, but it’s just light and charming the whole way through. Gene Kelly’s playful yet precise dancing never disappoints. Leslie Caron is my favorite on-screen ballerina, and while her acting might be a bit lacking in her film debut, what a debut it is. The colorful fantasy sequence of her dancing according to the…
