★★★½

A good mix of Quantum Leap and Groundhog Day that's completely built around its gimmick, an 8 minute whodunit. While the premise is fairly stupid and completely unrealistic in every way it makes for an interesting story. And no matter how many times I see the concept of reliving the same moments over and over I feel it works very well in different scenarios and here originally enough to not feel like a copy in any other way than that. Here there are other factors too, like where he exists, physically and mentally and as the plot points unravel it manages to stay interesting. The ending is its biggest weakness, it feels like a very shoehorned in happy ending, and as it's an alternative timeline it's not so happy for the guy who's body he takes over. And this really didn't need the company antagonist. Maybe it's just there to add to the run time too, as the film is pretty much over at about 1 hour 10 minutes in. You could say that this is more or less a high budget extended episode of an anthology TV show, but it's very entertaining none the less.

Gyllenhaal is solid and believable as soldier and really has to be to carry this as he's the only real character of any real significance. Definitely not on par with Moon in visuals however, rather surprisingly as this came after. A very generic looking film with a constant blue tint to it. But it is fairly similar to Moon in it's story revolving around a character that is being used against their knowledge and them finding out what's happening as part of the plot.
