Dune: Messiah is about to become the ‘Halloween Ends’ of this makeshift trilogy, and I couldn’t be happier about that. The third, and supposed final chapter is really going to test the audience’s new found love of this universe.
Seeing Dune: Part Two for my third, and most likely final time in the cinema will be a cherished memory. I was finally able to take my best mates out to experience the film in all of it’s 70mm IMAX glory.
An aspect of the film that stuck out to me this time was the attention given to facial expressions. It’s hard not to notice the little cues that great actors like Timothée Chalamet & Zendaya give when the camera is locked with intense close-ups, and the screen is over 70ft tall.
The black & white sequence of the film that takes place on Giedi Prime; homeworld of House Harkonnen, was absolutely breathtaking. Not only is it a stellar way to introduce our main adversary, Feyd-Rautha, but it’s also a very obvious depiction of the black & white nature of House Harkonnen’s morals.
The sound department, as well as the foley artists of Dune: Part Two deserve a huge amount of praise. The fact that they were able to create sounds that don’t exist on our planet, and make them sound like seamless parts of this universe…is astounding.
I can’t really say much more about Hans Zimmer that hasn’t already been said. He. Is. The. Man. But specifically, the track: ‘Kiss the Ring’ is one of the most powerful pieces of music in a film that I can in quite sometime.
With that being said, I am so glad that all the music drowns out when Muad’dib & Feyd-Rautha have their duel to decide the next Emperor of the Imperium. The choreography of the encounter is lightning quick, and brutal. Just like a real duel of this magnitude would be. The harsh exhales of Chalamet that echo through the chamber make the result all the more satisfying.
I stated at the top of this review that Denis Villeneuve is about to make the ‘Halloween Ends’ of the Dune franchise. Meaning: the third movie will cause a massive divide in the fanbase. I do not know this for sure, but the way the film ends with a final determined, wounded look on Chani’s face…tells me that Villeneuve indeed has a secret weapon at his disposal.
“What is happening, Mother?”
“Your brother attacks the Great Houses.
The Holy War begins…”
