I love you Noah Baumbach. You always manage to depress me.
This is a bleak film with very unlikable people doing pretty bad things to each other. It’s not a fun time, but I like it anyway. Noah’s writing is pretty much the most natural, real writing I’ve ever heard. That matched with some stellar performances, creates a world and a feeling of pure immersion in his stories that I don’t get with other writers. This film stands out as his run up to Marriage Story. His trial run of this kind of story and whilst this doesn’t reach the highs of that, this is still really good. I still think Frank needs a bit more of a conclusion but the rest of the characters arcs are all really compelling and I whilst I don’t like any of them I can’t help but be wrapped up in their depressing lives.
]]>No where near as good as the first. Some of the jokes are alright but it lacks the memorability and heart of the first
]]>Gerard Butler gestured at me and did the “all this” thing. This wave of interviews are gonna be pretty cool.
]]>I’ll never forget where I first watched this film. It was late 2021, a cold, miserable evening. I’d mistakenly arrived 2 hours early for a rehearsal of a production of Evita I was in. This had dropped on Netflix and as a fan of Lin’s previous work I gave it a go. I spent the next two hours sat in the enger seat of my VW Polo absolutely glued to my IPad. Even though I was 2 hours early I ended up being 15 minutes late as I simply needed sometime to collect myself after watching this gorgeous film.
It lit a fire in me to follow my theatre dreams. I ploughed myself into every production I could. I directed, choreographed, acted I did everything I could to interact with this art form. I loved every second and I eventually got into drama school. I’ve since left to pursue social media and I’ve happily done that for 3 years.
Watching this film again now has caught me in an interesting moment. Every day I feel my clock ticking. The ticking in the back of my head that makes me feel I have to succeed, to fulfill every conceivable dream I can muster and recently it’s been getting louder. I’m not naive, I know I won’t be relevant forever. There’s only so long I can keep up the brand I’ve created for myself. I’ve loved social media but it’s not my calling. Geek Rap and being the Phil Collins guy isn’t what’s in my soul. Theatre is. Storytelling is. I’ve neglected my ion for theatre for too long. I’ve got plays that need finishing, songs that need writing and stages that need filling. I’ve got theatre in my soul and I will never be able to thank Jonathan Larson, wherever he is, enough for reminding me of that.
We have no idea when our time is up, when our clock will stop ticking. So live, and create. I can’t wait to see what life throws at me and what stories I can tell from it.
]]>It is quite honestly bewildering the route this franchise took after this. I forgot how somewhat grounded this is, considering how insane it gets in the later instalments.
I love this film so much. Every bloke wanted to be Daniel growing up. Everyone wanted a Mr Miyagi. These characters are so likeable, I like how this film takes its time, and nurtures these smaller character moments. It’s got a killer soundtrack, it’s the Karate Kid, it’s just brilliant.
]]>BAHAHAHAHAHAHA….BAGAHAHAHAH…Fountain of Youth more like Fountain of Poo, more like Dribble of Youth, Tap of Youth, or Fountain of Dogshite.
]]>IM SO BORED….oh Michael Cera’s amusing…..BORRREEEEDDD
]]>For better or worse, it’s pretty much the exact same movie
]]>This makes Cobra Kai look like it was directed by Scorsese.
]]>This is probably the most heartfelt Disney remake so far. For better or worse they changed some things and you know what I respect it because it all seems to come from a place of love.
]]>I can’t wait to see Robert’s adventures in Nazi .
How the hell is there more of these films and how the hell do they end up in the 1940s? This was utterly awful. Like utterly and completely devoid of any merit. Some of the worst performances and worse editing of all time.
]]>I haven’t seen this in years and I forgot a lot of the jokes. That being said should I revisit in the near future I don’t expect it to be as funny.
I used to love this movie. It was like the first adult comedy that took over my school when we were in year 9. It’s very funny and a lot of the jokes really land, but I think this movie shines as having some quite genuine heart at its core. I really like our core trio and all their ups and downs. I think Ted & John have a really touching connection and yeh I just really like it. Good movie. Shame the second one’s crap.
]]>Controversially, Tucker > Bough
What a sequel. Everything is on a much grander scale. The effects, the locations, the fights, it’s a bombastic time from all those aspects. I know we don’t talk a lot about ‘character’ with these films, you know who cares, it’s Johnny English, but fuck it I’m gonna go there. I think this nails Johnny’s character. Yeh he’s a bit thick and that’s part of the charm but he’s not completely useless. The third film swaps out this kind of flawed guy trying to do his best for his country for this utter clown and it really annoys me because they nailed his character here. I think he works so well with Tucker too. Whilst this one certainly isn’t as funny as the original, this makes up for it with its more cohesive character moments and action packed set pieces
]]>Tony Todd stole the show with less than 5 mins of screen time and some of the coolest line delivery of the year. Man that guy was cool. What a legend.
Not my kind of film tho honestly. I’m not a horror guy.
]]>Nothing screams British humour like taking the piss out of the French and I absolutely love it.
This is British classic. If there was a criterion collection for purely British movies this would be front and centre. The humour holds up perfectly. Rowan Atkinson’s performance is spot on. I love the climax, and I think every single segment has bits of comedy gold. I also can’t believe this was my first introduction to Malcovich. That Robbie Williams song is pretty banging too. Yeh really solid movie, only reason it isn’t higher is because I don’t think the Lorna character is needed and I think she distracts from the core Johnny / Bough dynamic and I wish we got more of them.
]]>Aye it’s alright. Are we ‘back’? I think Fantastic Four will be the real decider of that. However this is certainly a good start.
It’s got heart, some really nice character interactions and a bombastic finale. On the other hand it kinda feels like two separate films, with the first feeling slightly slow leading to the more interesting second half feeling kind of rushed. Certain characters also don’t have nearly as much development as the others. This is very much the Yelena movie and she’s great but I’d have liked for Bucky to have any sort of arc or traits. Marvel genuinely doesn’t have a clue what to do with that character. Sentry was cool though. I think it needs a rewatch to gather my full thoughts. But at the minute I think it’s perfectly serviceable
]]>Dan Ackroyd! What you doing here!?
Jesus Christ this is a dark movie. I’d completely forgotten how dark some of these scenes are. Child slavery, a man hanging himself on a ceiling fan, heart ripping, I can’t believe my father let me watch this as a child. The action here is phenomenal and it’s all set against these jaw droppingly gorgeous physical sets. I like Short Round. I hate Willie. I also think this movie is lacking any real sort of heart that the other two have, but I still like it. The action and Harrison Fords performance really does carry it.
]]>The best musician biopic I’ve ever seen.
I love Take That. But in all honesty I was never really the biggest fan of Robbie’s solo output, so it shocked me at how invested I was in this. Firstly, the monkey is such a creative decision and I love it. The amount of character they get out of this CGI ape is incredible. I really like the lighting in this, I think all the numbers are staged very well with some super creative visuals. It’s just a very creative film, it’s so full of character. It delivers gut punches and some truly awe inspiring scenes. It’s paced really well and aye I had a really really good time with this. The only thing that was missing was ‘Pray’ I wanted to see the monkey do the routine
]]>I loved the first two movies growing up, but by the time this came out I was kind of past it. I still think I’d enjoy those first two films but I don’t really like this.
It firstly feels very dated. The pop culture references and the humour almost feel too early 2010s for it to have come out in 2018. The film opens with a man playing temple run, which is a bit odd. I laughed maybe twice at this, it’s really not that funny. Any chemistry Bough and Johnny had in the first isn’t present here. Interesting fact tho, Bough was married to Will Mckenzies mum in real life. How the fuck did he manage that. Anyway it’s pretty harmless, there’s a couple of cute/fun set pieces. I like the cyclist bit. But it’s not got enough heart, or actual comedy for me to call it good.
]]>Yeh I quite like this movie.
The lighting is pretty ass and I don’t really like Donald Glover’s performance. I also really don’t like the inclusion of Maul. I think it really takes away from the biggest draw of this, that being how disconnected it is from everything else. To a casual viewer Maul showing up is fucking mental. I also think it is slightly over gratuitous with the fan service and some of these lines are so stupid. But I still like this movie. I think for the most part, it’s a lot of fun. Alden is brilliant as Han, I like all the side characters, especially Beckett. I like the action, I love the Kessel Run. The score is really cool and unique. It’s just inoffensive Star Wars fun and it’s nice to revisit this after the recent spell of controversial Star Wars projects.
]]>If Bumblebee wasn’t utterly insufferable and Elita had maybe a bit more to do, I genuinely think this could be perfect. Alas I utterly despise Bumblebee.
That last act, oh boy that last act. As a lifelong Transformers fan that is all I’ve ever dreamed of. The Optimus/Megatron relationship is expertly done. Utterly brilliant. The animation is gorgeous, the score is pretty great, and I love all of the fan service. It’s not gratuitous at all and I love it. YOU GOT THE TOUCH!! YOU GOT THE POWERRRR
]]>Yep perfect. It’s perfect. We know this.
]]>Weirdly enough I don’t think Rise Of Skywalker ruins this movie. It ruins Last Jedi but I still really enjoy this.
I really like Rey, I really like Finn, I really really like Han. I enjoy the visuals, I like the score. I think Kylo Ren is set up perfectly. I don’t think anything will tarnish my love for this movie. It was the first movie I can being completely hyped for its release. I think it’s a really solid reintroduction to Star Wars and think it can solidly stand alone from the next two. I wish, wish, wish they had just planned this trilogy out because people forget how good this film is because the other two shat the bed. Tbf this one isn’t perfect though. I have never really understood the point of the First Order. Like what their stretch is because if they’re just an upstart facist group how the hell do they have this much ability to construct Starkiller base. I think they needed to actually show more of the effects of the First Order and their motivations and all that to make them more intimidating. I also don’t think the humour lands all the time, especially in the third act. Anyway I still really enjoy this film
]]>Makes absolutely no sense without the Clone Wars TV show.
Look I’m not a prequel guy. I’m an OT kinda guy but I’ll it this film is entertaining. Not just even for the memes even thought they help. I do genuinely enjoy the battles, and most of the last act. I also really like the battle of Coruscant but it just feels so disted from the rest of the film. This whole thing feels disted from the previous two movies. There’s like no reference to any events that happens in either of them. It just feels like missed potential because it just adds to the feeling of those movies being irrelevant. It leads to Anakins turn feeling so abrupt and out of nowhere, that is without the context from the animated show. Also goes without saying obviously the dialogue is awful, the performances are a bit all over the place, and I genuinely don’t think George Lucas has ever given Natalie Portman direction but yet I do still enjoy this mostly. The score is phenomenal. The digital vistas are still stunning and I do enjoy all the fight scenes. The choreo is insane. I just don’t think it’s the masterpiece people seem to think it is. The Clone Wars TV show is my preferred prequel content and the last four episodes of that, now that was a masterpiece.
]]>Masterful. If they bugger up this remake I will not be impressed.
This was always a staple of my childhood and I haven’t seen it in ages and it’s such a joy to revisit. I still relate immensely to Hiccup, I still adore Toothless but I’ve gained so much more respect for the father son dynamic between Stoic & Hiccup. Outside of John Powell’s score that might be my favourite part of the movie. It’s just so good, it’s paced brilliantly and outside of some slightly dated looking character models it’s really is near perfect.
I’ve spoken to Dean Deblois quite a lot over the past few months about the remake (check out an issue of SFX for my full discussions) and whilst I have faith that the remake comes from a place of love and will be a fitting and faithful adaptation, I still question the point of it. Dean is so proud of this animated trilogy and rightly so. This is the perfect medium for this story. I just struggle to see what live action could add. I’ve only seen 3 scenes and they were great but they were almost shot for shot the same, so really what’s the point when we already have this masterful version. Anyway I guess we shall see in a few months time
]]>Sex, booze, vampires & Hailee Steinfeld. It’s every fantasy I’ve had since I was 13 years old.
]]>Marvel needs an absolute miracle to be able to top this. Mark my words, Doomsday and Secret Wars will be substance-less, cameo reliant, standard Marvel shlock. This will go down as Marvels swan song. James Gunn came in and have Marvel their last utterly brilliant film and dipped to DC and I personally can’t wait to see what he does there.
]]>No better respite from a heavy stag do weekend than stumbling across this on the hotel tv and watching it with the lads.
Such a great film. Great characters, the humour still holds up, the pacing is brilliant it’s just such good fun. I thoroughly enjoy it every single time I revisit it. It’s wild how well James Gunn turned these comic book nobodies into these beloved staples of the MCU. It’s easily the best MCU trilogy and this is an utterly brilliant start to it.
]]>Yummy movie very yummy movie.
]]>We gotta hack the mainframe, by the firewall, engage USB drive and the code breaker files, picture that but for nearly 2 hours.
]]>I do not like this film at all.
The dialogue is as stilted as ever. The editing is as whack as ever. The action is weightless, but worst of all this story is incomprehensible. I’ve never known what’s going on and I never will. This film leaves me with so many bloody questions but the main one being, how the fuck can people look at this and say it’s a good film. It is not a good film, it is a bad film. A boring, overindulgent, poorly written, poorly performed, utterly bad film. The score is phenomenal though.
]]>I’ve never been on drugs, but this is how I’d imagine it to be. Imagine a 2 hour compilation of all the memes and that’s pretty much the whole movie.
]]>I want a Psyduck so very much.
Sure yeh it’s a movie. It’s not very compelling at all. The plot is very predictable and the characters aren’t anything to write home about. The humour works most the time. The actions pretty cool. It’s cool to see Pokemon. Would’ve been cooler to see them in an interesting movie. But yeh I mean this just fine like a perfectly fine movie except Rita Ora. She can’t act and it really took me out seeing her playing some sort of hyper intelligent scientist. Also the girl from Bridgerton appears and says like 2 lines. That’s something that happens
]]>I don’t know who or what has been convincing people that this is a good movie. If you genuinely want to experience this story, just play the LEGO game because it’s infinitely more enjoyable.
I didn’t like this growing up. I haven’t watched it for years and you know what I still don’t like it very much. It’s so bloody boring. That second act is so incredibly dull that I fell asleep in it. The performances are stiff, the dialogue is whack, but hey it’s got pod racing. I like pod racing. I also like Duel of the Fates. I also weirdly kinda like Jar Jar. He’s the only person in this film with any personality and to be completely honest I actually think he’s quite funny. Sue me I don’t care. This is not a good movie. It’s got a couple of good moments but on the whole, it’s just pretty limp.
]]>Right this was a hard one for me.
This was my favourite Star Wars growing up and I haven’t seen it in maybe 5 years and unfortunately yeh I’m starting to see its flaws. Dont get me wrong I still adore this film but the pacing issues are so clear and coming off the back of Empire it’s just such a noticeable dip in quality. All the Jabba stuff is so unnecessary and except for our lord and saviour Joh Yowza just isn’t especially engaging because Luke’s plan is so ridiculous. But, that second half is phenomenal. Like as soon as the midway point hits I’m so locked in. I even like the ewoks. I don’t think they’re annoying at all. I love all the action I think that Luke Vader fight is phenomenal, and all the space battle stuff is so great. I just freaking love Star Wars man. But yeh this isn’t the masterpiece I ed it being but hey I still love it
]]>Yeh it’s alright I guess.
This is it. This is the blueprint for every sequel ever. It’s perfect. It expands the universe. It introduces new compelling characters whilst also continuing arcs and developing our existing ones. The action is vastly improved. The opening on hoth is so cool. The humour from Han & Yoda is hilarious. The score is just godly. It’s been a good while since I’ve checked this out and I’ve absolutely loved it.
]]>The lengths this guy goes to after one date…damn that must’ve been some otherworldly level sex to warrant this response.
Its fun, its gory, its kinda funny at times, I really liked the first 20 minutes, just seeing this guy go about his day to day. That kind of all gets dropped for the action and whilst that’s cool, it’s doesn’t leave much space for any compelling character moments or relationship growth. It’s just action packed and that fun I guess but I really liked the character stuff in the first 20 mins and would’ve been nice to see more of that.
]]>Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig are by far my favourite Hollywood power couple.
I’ve wanted to watch this for ages and it didn’t let me down. Between s Ha, Kicking and Screaming and this I think Noah has perfectly encapsulated the early 20s experience.
Anyway Mistress America sees Greta Gerwig giving not only a brilliant performance but adding so much as a co-writer. They pack so much quick witted, memorable, relatable, emotive writing into such a short run time and I will always commend these two on how natural their dialogue feels. It’s always so quick and overlapping and random at times yet it never fails to feel genuine, nostalgic almost. I think the film is paced really well, I like all the characters, everyone’s memorable and I really like the climax. There’s a couple of arguments scenes here and all of them are done really well. Baumbach dissects prétention so brilliantly in his films. It’s a character trait that’s there throughout most of his characters but it’s always used as a tool to highlight insecurity and I think that’s utterly brilliant.
Really great film. Definitely worth checking out.
]]>This film is aging like fine wine for me.
Every time I watch this I like it more. I gleam more out of it. I really like this movie. I adore Greta Gerwig, I love the cinematography, the score, the writing, the black and white, ugh it’s so good. The themes are so poignant and as someone who’s struggling slightly with their direction atm and moving to London away from all my mates, yeh this certainly struck somewhat of a chord this time round. Also that monologue she gives about love, ooooh boy that’s some good shit.
]]>Randy Newman did the score for this. As in Toy Story and Monsters Inc music Randy Newman, also the score is brilliant btw.
I don’t know what else I can really say about this. I think the aspect ratio is wonderfully intimate and frames everything beautifully. I love all the references to Sondheim’s Company. Both Charlie and Nicole both sing songs from the show and that’s clearly very purposeful. The show is all about whether it’s worth it to open yourself up to love. Whether all the heartache and struggle is worth it in the end and much like Bobby in Company comes to realise it is, so does Charlie as he sings Being Alive after all the hardship he and Nicole go through in the film. He realises because of their son and the good times they had it was obviously worth it. Of course I love all this shit tho, I’m a theatre kid. I just adore this film. The writing and the direction and bloody hell the performances are perfect.
]]>This film speaks to me on many levels.
After I left sixth form I returned to that very school and worked there for two years. I maintained the same friend group I’d had for over ten years. I visited the same comic book shop, I ate lunch at the same place, I grasped onto everything I could of my childhood because letting go of that and heading into the unknown was a wildly terrifying concept.
Blokes tend to mask this fear with pretentiousness. We don’t really allow ourselves to acknowledge that this pattern of behaviour is based in our own anxieties. Instead of addressing this fact, we do everything in our power to validate and uplift our current situation. This is a rare thing to see on display in a film and I’m grateful to Baumbach for putting it on screen.
This film just feels so real. From the performances, the writing and the setting and camera work, is all so grounded and it all adds to this sense of stagnation. I really do enjoy this film, I find it very funny and very endearing. I think the pacing is kinda dodgy, it takes a while to get going and the second act really dips but the last 20 minutes are so strong. Yep very reflective film for me.
]]>Lost has consumed my life for the past few months. A friend recommended it to me and I dove in head first. It’s always been a show I’ve been aware of, it’s a pillar of pop culture how could you not? But this was my first time experiencing it and I can honestly I absolutely loved it, and this documentary was the perfect way to end this journey.
The outpouring of love on display for this series here is wildly refreshing. Given the shows controversial ending and the modern trend of just shitting on every conceivable thing people used to enjoy, this was a breath of fresh air. Many big series or franchises regardless of whether or not their decline in quality all have something at their heart, that being the fans. That’s something a lot of big studios nowadays forget. There’s a feeling as though fans are constantly disrespected nowadays, spoke down to either directly by the studios or through the god awful content they churn out. I never felt that way with Lost and I didn’t with this documentary.
The past few months I’ve adored indulging myself in a series that never made me feel pandered to. That never underestimated their audiences intelligence. It forced you to engage with it and I wish I’d experienced it in real time. Not just for that classic weekly release schedule but also just to be involved in this community. This documentary is such a loving testament to the show and the community and I wish we saw more of that nowadays.
]]>The plot doesn’t start till 40 mins in, all the characters are pretty dislikable, like I wanna drop kick that lil hair ball Eric, and it’s not especially compelling, funny or interesting. But the songs are banging. Under Pressure, and that Lovelace song are so good. Idk why the lil guy sings opera out of nowhere tho.
]]>I love Lego. But this didn’t need to be Lego. Like at all.
To be honest whilst enjoyable this does feel very self congratulatory. Pharrel’s story, whilst interesting didn’t make for a blow me away tale filled with twists and turns. It was a pretty standard fine documentary. Perfectly serviceable plane film
]]>I haven’t watched many films lately because I’m 5 seasons deep on a watch through of a banging tv show but I’m on a plane and I don’t have episodes ed, so had to check this out. I’m glad I did.
Great writing, so grounded, poignant, lovable real characters and it’s a genuine pleasure to see them interact. Culkin deserves his awards buzz and so does Jesse for his writing. Really enjoyed this. It didn’t reach the emotional highs I was expecting and to be honest I could’ve had an extra 20 mins of this but alas still very solid.
]]>I’m so glad Harrison Ford had fun. I certainly didn’t.
]]>This is the only film I always have ed on my IPad. I watch it on every flight. This film is one of the only enjoyable things about air travel.
I’m adore so much about this movie, but mostly because this movie represents everything I’ve ever wanted. A girl who listens to my movie recommendations, a friend group to sing and dance with, to be a part of something bigger than yourself. The fact Anna Kendrick gets with this goofy ass film bro fills me with so much hope for the future. The fact Benji gets to be a part of the Trebles fills me with so much hope for the future. Even the fact that Chloe gets to sing despite her nodes fills me with hope. I just adore this perfect lil time capsule of the early 2010s. Everything about it speaks to me on such a level which is honestly hard to describe. The humour, the heart, the music, the choreo, the pacing every single bit is pitch perfect.
]]>Charles Laughton as Wilfred is by far and away my favourite lawyer performance ever.
First off this came out the same year as 12 Angry Men, and where that was a perfect behind the scenes of a courtroom drama, this is pretty much a perfect actual courtroom drama.
This films manages to balance humour, drama, heartbreak all so brilliantly. Wilder is a master at weaving comedy into his films. He manages to make every character who could be a caricature into a full developed, fleshed out real person which you can root for. Wilfred for example could’ve so easily slipped into some stereotypical old lawyer bloke but he’s got so much more going on and provides so much humour in the first act. I love the pacing in this, it flows brilliantly and considering two thirds of it takes place in one courtroom that’s not easily done. The plot had me hooked and twists I didn’t see coming at all. The performances are all spot on and there’s some brilliant cinematography too. I especially love all the shots with the monocle. It’s a great great film and stands alongside some of Wilder’s best.
I don’t get it! What is this? A comedy? A drama? A thriller? I don’t understand!!!
Don’t give me any of that “wow just because a movie doesn’t conform to a specific genre doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie” no no this movie is like tonal whiplash. We’ll have a scene of Mark Wahlberg doing some corny ass dialogue and it feels tongue in cheek and then boom two kids get brutally shotgunned to the chest and head. I don’t get it. The dialogue is shit. The story and plot are awful. ‘Wind’ are you kidding me??? WIND???? This film has moments of pure hilarity but overall it’s a mess.
]]>It’s not as awful as I . But it’s still pretty mid.
I laughed maybe twice at this. It’s not overly funny at all, and somehow the performances feel dampened down in this which doesn’t help. I’m not a huge fan of the pacing in this. It feels very clunky and a bit all over the place, that leads to none of the themes feeling fully developed. There’s a couple of charming moments and I like seeing Shrek in new places but it’s not very adventurous, it doesn’t do anything daring or try anything new. It’s just a pretty bland generic sequel but that definitely stands out when your first two movies are bangers.
