Honey, I Shrunk the Watchlist! Challenge 2025
Progress: 21/35
6: Watch the movie that is rated lowest

-Gotta say, it's fantastic.
-Say that again...

One of the most soulless movies I’ve ever watched. I just don’t understand the decision making here at all. Most of the runtime has the team as test subjects, forced to kill for the military, and they all hate each other. "It’s clobberin’ time" is what Ben’s older brother used to say before beating him up. I just… I can’t imagine a version of this movie that fans or anyone looking to have a good time would enjoy less. The tonal whiplash is brutal. You can easily tell which scenes were reshoots, because this completely joyless movie suddenly starts awkwardly injecting Marvel-esque quips at the end of scenes. That, and they also feature Kate Mara in one of the worst wigs I’ve ever seen. Fingers crossed for First Steps. It would be nice to finally have at least one good Fantastic Four movie.

"I'd hate to wake up one morning and find out she was killed in a rockslide!"

There’s a shocking amount of runtime dedicated to Reed and Sue’s wedding. I don’t have as much nostalgia for this one, but I still think the Silver Surfer has a really cool character design. Kind of looks like Will Poulter, ngl. Sure, it’s disappointing they turned Galactus into a storm cloud, but I’ll take that over a sky beam any day of the week.

"Unfortunately, the doctors just couldn't do anything to fix your face."

This isn’t a good movie, but I have so much nostalgia for it, and I’ll always take camp over self-seriousness in my comic book films. It was one of the few movie soundtracks I owned on CD, so 8 year old me was definitely blasting Velvet Revolver and Sum 41 in my bedroom when this came out.

There are definitely elements here that hold up without any nostalgia goggles, though. It's perfectly cast, and the dynamic between Ben and Johnny is genuinely fun. I’m convinced Johnny Storm is the reason Rian Johnson cast Chris Evans as another charismatic asshole in Knives Out.

The writing isn’t great, and the second half is pretty weak, with all the contrived infighting that's apparently required in team movies. But I think I just saw this at the perfect age, because I’d honestly rather rewatch this than most of the MCU. Like I’m pretty sure the scene where Ben can’t pick up the engagement ring because of his rock fingers made me cry as a kid.

They gave a blind woman a POV shot. Pure schlock made just to hold onto the film rights and never actually released, but still a really fun time with the cast and crew clearly doing their best on a tiny budget. Might be the hardest I’ve ever laughed at a movie ending.

That's also my reaction whenever I have to listen to myself speak. I'm not a big musical person, to the extent that I had never even heard of Company before this. So I’m always thankful for challenges like this that expose me to things I wouldn’t have looked for on my own.

I had heard of Sondheim, though, and this was my first time seeing him on screen. Gonna be honest, the guy might be a genius, but I would never want to work for him. The ive aggressiveness in that room was giving me anxiety. Highly recommend the Documentary Now! parody of this where John Mulaney plays him. "Godzilla was baptized in the fire of the H-bomb and survived. What could kill it now?"

Finally got around to watching this after picking up Criterion’s Shōwa era boxset a couple years ago. This was expectedly fantastic and everything I hoped it would be. The tone is much more somber than most of the 38+ films in the franchise, and understandably so. Godzilla is a direct metaphor for the atomic bomb, and this came out less than a decade after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Kind of wild to think about.

The director, Ishirō Honda, fought in World War II and was held as a P.O.W. in China for over a year. He also kept an undetonated mortar shell that had landed near him on his desk for the rest of his life. I think his and presumably every other crew member's experience during the war clearly informs the film’s bleakness and sense of devastation. Some of the dialogue is genuinely jarring to hear as a Western viewer used to monster movies being fun, popcorn fare. This is not that.

Some of the effects are obviously dated, but they are still incredibly impressive and fun to watch, especially when you know how they were pulled off. Huge respect to Haruo Nakajima, the suit actor who played Godzilla. Seriously, look up what he went through. The suit weighed 200 pounds, and he could only perform in it for a few minutes at a time due to heat exhaustion from the suit and the film lights.

It's kind of crazy how fully formed Godzilla is in this first film, especially when you compare it to other long-running franchises that took time to find their footing. Jason does not even get his iconic hockey mask until the third Friday the 13th movie. But here, Godzilla already has the look, the atomic breath, the roar. (Which was made by rubbing a resin-coated leather glove across the strings of a double bass. I had to look it up.)

And that score is absolutely phenomenal. Easily one of my favorites of all time. I definitely want to watch at least a couple more Godzilla films this year.

The computer terminal heist is rightfully one of the most iconic scenes in movie history, but you'd think that if it's guarded by voice activation, retinal scans, temperature sensors, and a pressure-sensitive floor, it might also just have like... a camera? Anyway, it's a really fun movie that kind of loses me in the third act because it becomes a bit more cartoonish than where the series eventually goes. This definitely gave kid me a very specific and completely irrational fear of being on top of a moving elevator.

Puns, claymation, anthropomorphic dogs, miniatures, slapstick, British humor, monster movie parodies, and a completely justified reverence for cheese. Every aspect of Wallace & Gromit, and especially this one, feels like it was made specifically for me. The whole vibe is so charming, and there’s something so special about seeing the animators’ fingerprints on the characters. I’m not sure any other medium shows that kind of human touch. Everyone always talks about the iconic bee scene, but nothing will prepare you for when Nic Cage, dressed as a bear, runs up and sucker-punches a woman in the face. He punches four separate women in the movie. I love how completely unhinged this film is. It's terrible, but it's so fun to watch. It’s like the filmmakers kept forgetting it was supposed to be a horror movie, so they just threw in random jump scares whether they made sense or not. At one point, there’s even a truck jump scare while Nic Cage is on a boat. Incredible.

Surprisingly, it’s a lot more faithful to the original than I expected, but every change is hilariously misguided. The 1973 version explored some pretty interesting themes of Paganism versus Catholicism. This one basically boils down to, “Wouldn’t it be spooky if we lived in a matriarchal society?” Definitely has to be seen to be beelieved.

Half of me wants to write something kind of in-depth because it’s been over a month since I watched a great movie, but this is exactly the kind of film I’d get carried away with and accidentally write for like two hours about. I just love atmospheric horror that slowly builds with dread so much. This is one of those classics, like Planet of the Apes, where it’s impossible to go in without already knowing the ending, but it’s still worth the watch just to experience how everything happens.

There were definitely more folk songs than I expected and it's surprisingly pretty funny. Edward Woodward's reactions to Christopher Lee were hilarious and some of his line deliveries are going to be stuck in my head all week.

I don’t think the movie is especially scary, but it nails that “something’s off” vibe and has some really fun, creepy imagery. Loved the May Day costumes and masks. I’d probably choose the Salmon of Knowledge, myself. Anyways, it’s always great when you watch a classic and actually love it and not just “appreciate” what it did for the genre.

"Is this your god? Killer of children? What kind of fanatics worship such a god?"

Bold of Ridley Scott to make this when The Prince of Egypt already exists. Aside from its special effects, this would’ve felt right at home as one of those big budget biblical epics from the ’50s. But this came out in 2014. So even putting the accuracy and representation issues aside, it just feels weird seeing Joel Edgerton or John Turturro as Pharaohs.

Anyway, this was a lot better than I was expecting. It’s definitely overlong and sometimes pretty slow, but there are some legitimately amazing compositions. Ridley always manages to pull those off, even in his worst movies. Christian Bale also gives a pretty great performance as a much more militaristic Moses than you’re used to seeing.

It’s not something I’d ever want to rewatch, but it’s probably the most technically impressive movie we’ve watched for a Bad Movie Night. Do you think that if this had made more money, Ridley would have followed it up with Leviticus: Laws and Punishments?

The first time I saw this movie was one of the most painful moviegoing experiences of my life. Not because of the movie, which is definitely bad, but because I somehow pulled something in my back halfway through and just sat there in pain, waiting for what felt like an eternity for it to end before finally telling my friends I needed to go to MedExpress. So I can confidently say this is the only movie I've ever watched that caused me physical pain.

Rewatching it now, I’ll it it’s a pretty fun watch with a group and a great way to learn about Egyptian mythology. Like, I had no idea all their gods were white or that Set had a Scottish accent. Neat!

"Only last week I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick! I'm so mean I make medicine sick!"

I’m not a boxing person, so most of what I knew about Muhammad Ali came from what's slipped into the cultural zeitgeist. Things like “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” the fact that he changed his name, and his refusal to fight in Vietnam which got him banned from boxing for years. But watching this, finally seeing him fight and speak, it’s easy to understand why he became such a mythic figure.

Of course he was a phenomenal athlete. His all-time record was 56 wins, 5 losses, and 37 knockouts, many of those against some of the greatest boxers ever. But he was also incredibly charismatic, funny, and insanely quotable. Most importantly, he fought for a lot more than just himself. It’s easy to see why the people of Zaire rallied around him instead of Foreman, even though Foreman was the heavy favorite.

What I loved most was how much of this focused on contextualizing the fight. Even though it’s the main event and the moment everything builds to, the fight feels secondary to what it represents: resilience, showmanship, political defiance, and cultural pride. The music is fantastic too, with songs from James Brown, B.B. King, The Spinners, The Crusaders, and other great Black artists of the time. I love when documentaries focus so much on the atmosphere of an event like this one did. Easily one of the best sports docs I've seen and I'm excited to watch the Documentary Now! episode that spoofs it.

Honey, I Shrunk the Watchlist! Challenge 2025
Progress: 17/35
26: Watch the movie you have been anticipating watching most

"I once mistreated a frog in fourth grade science class. I figured this was my punishment.”

As much as I want to say this is another Bong hit, I’m definitely not as high on it as I was with Parasite.

Mark Ruffalo once again proves he can steal scenes as a fragile egomaniac and delivers the only Trump impression I’ve laughed at since 2015. Bong has said the character isn’t based on any one politician, but I’m pretty sure Mark didn’t get that memo.

On paper, I love everything about this: it’s high-concept sci-fi with a heavy philosophical focus on existential dread; it’s a dark comedy that satirizes authoritarianism, capitalism, and colonialism; it’s directed by one of my favorite working filmmakers and stars several of my favorite actors. And maybe that’s why I feel a little mixed on it after sitting with it for a while. This should’ve been a home run, but it feels more like a stand-up double.

It’s still the most I’ve laughed at a movie all year, though. I actually really dug Pattinson’s weird little accent and how completely unhinged Ruffalo and Toni Collette were. But there’s just a lot going on here. So many subplots never get the space they need to feel fully fleshed out, and by the third act, they start stepping all over each other. It ends up feeling kind of messy, and the resolution didn’t land as hard as it needed to.

That said, I loved the design of the Creepers, which gave me serious Ender’s Game vibes (the book, not that god-awful movie). And there are individual scenes here that rank with Bong’s best. There’s a dinner sequence that escalates so chaotically it might be the funniest spiral of events I’ve seen since Babylon's arrival of film sound scene.

I’ll definitely need to rewatch this one to solidify my feelings, but even with its messiness, it’s a wildly entertaining ride. Also, for my PGH friends: I HIGHLY recommend Stuntpig in Squirrel Hill. It's right next to the Manor Theatre and home to one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. I can't tell you how hard the "Mr. Orange" hit post-Bong. Tell them Slate sent you. They won’t know who that is, but it'll probably be fun to say.

"Every word of Irish spoken is a bullet fired for Irish freedom."

I watched this forever ago but forgot to write a review, which might’ve been for the best because I can’t the last time a movie grew on me this much. I had a great time with it on first watch, don’t get me wrong, but it took a while for me to fully internalize just how clever the entire idea of Kneecap is.

Generally, films about the forming of a band can come across a bit self-important. If you're not already a fan, they usually have their work cut out trying to win you over. That’s not the case here. This feels less like a band that stumbled into a cause and more like a cause that needed a band — and Kneecap makes that cause the center of everything they do. The film’s a fun, chaotic mix of A Hard Day’s Night and Trainspotting, and it plays less like a self-promotional biopic and more like a natural extension of their message.

Kneecap recognized the urgency of Ireland reclaiming its language and pushing back against identity erasure. No spoilers, but there’s a statistic shown at the end of the film that genuinely blew my mind and really contextualized the importance of language preservation. Colonialism is a global plague, so it’s no surprise that this seemingly specific fight (Ireland vs. British rule) resonates far beyond just one country. Their music has a sharp political undercurrent with biting lyrics that are often genuinely funny. My current favorite is “Get Your Brits Out.” It’s satire with sincerity. Hip hop with the spirit of punk. A t in one hand and a Molotov in the other, all while subtextually championing pride in your cultural identity.

I’m not usually someone who plays an artist on repeat, but I’ve pretty much been listening to nothing but Kneecap since I saw this. It also sent me down a few research rabbit holes on Irish history, and I realized how much I didn’t know about what my ancestors went through before immigrating to the U.S. They’re easily going to be one of my top five most-listened-to artists of 2025, and I’d love to see them live when they come to the States.

-Rosemary? What's the matter?
-I have no purpose. I'm just a girl. The world is full of girls.

I had to keep reminding myself that this was supposed to be set in present-day Ireland and not a hundred years ago, given some of this dialogue. While this could technically count as my Ireland pick for MAW, I think my ancestors would rise from the grave just to box my ears if I did.

I mean, you kind of know what you're in for from the start with Christopher Walken narrating from beyond the grave in maybe the worst "Irish" accent put to film. It'd make Lucky the Leprechaun blush. I have no idea how they got this cast, especially considering the absolutely unhinged twist this movie has. You could be given a thousand chances and still never guess what Anthony’s big secret is. The whole thing is tragically delicious.

"I think shit just happens. But that's me."

Accidentally chose a movie for our Bad Movie Nights that also counts toward MAW. Definitely not a terrible movie, but it's just kind of self-serious and dour when I was hoping for something wacky and fun. Despite dealing with the literal end of the world, Cage delivers one of his more subdued performances of the 2000s. Three out of four of us fell asleep at some point during it, which should tell you how entertaining it is. That said, it does have one of the funniest continuity mistakes I've ever seen—watch the eyelines of the cop and Nic right before the plane comes in here. I was cackling.

We wouldn’t even need a machine to replace him—just, like, a bracket and a stand would do. Can’t be fulfilling in the slightest. He holds that stick more than he holds his loved ones. “The Lord works in suspicious ways.”

I’ll be honest… this was kind of a letdown. As someone who absolutely adores the first two Paddington movies, this was just good when I wanted it to be great.

What made the first two films so special wasn’t just their charm, it was the unexpected depth beneath their family-friendly exterior. Bear with me here, but the first Paddington is an immigrant story that celebrates diversity while subtly critiquing xenophobia. Paddington 2 goes even further and criticizes the way society treats prisoners while showcasing how positivity can transform a community. They weren’t just adorable movies about a bear—they also had something important to say.

This one is very much an adventure movie first and foremost. The great Chaplin-esque comedy that defined the first two isn’t as present, and instead of carving out its own identity, it falls into one of my least favorite sequel traps in leaning way too hard on callbacks.

No hate on Emily Mortimer, since she was given an impossible task in taking over for Sally Hawkins, but it never stopped feeling off seeing her as Mary. And you can just feel Paul King's absence in the director’s chair. There’s still whimsy, positivity, and all the things we love about Paddington, but it’s missing that extra touch that made the first two masterpieces instead of just good family films.

”I wonder how I would react if you did that to me…”

I don’t know if it’s just the movies I tend to pick, but it feels like so many Scandinavian films really embrace cringe comedy. This has to be in the top ten films not to watch with your partner… or maybe you should? It’s one of those movies that people can interpret wildly differently, which might make it a great litmus test for a relationship.

I liked watching this, but loved thinking about it afterward. The direction is incredibly subdued, maybe even to the point of being boring if you’re not invested in the ideas it’s exploring. It’s a dialogue-driven movie that loves long, unbroken shots of painfully awkward conversations that stretch just long enough to make you squirm.

I knew I needed to see more of Ruben Östlund’s work after Triangle of Sadness, and this honestly feels like a feature-length prelude to the check scene in that film. It’s rare to find a filmmaker who dissects gender roles so intelligently without telling you what to think. The movie doesn’t actually judge Tomas. It just presents his brutally human reaction and forces you to sit in the discomfort of the aftermath of an act of cowardice.

It makes you question what you’d do in his position. It’s easy to say you’d be the hero in that moment, but would you? You don’t really know until it happens. And honestly, the worst thing Tomas does isn’t even running—it’s trying to gaslight Ebba into thinking it didn’t happen. But even that, while not remotely okay, is understandable in a deeply human way. He’s not trying to manipulate her as much as he’s trying to rewrite reality in his own mind because itting the truth would completely shatter his self-image. And the more he denies it, the worse it gets for him.

It’s uncomfortably realistic, and that’s what makes it brilliant.

"Without even thinking about it, I used to be able to fly. Now I'm trying to look inside myself and find out how I did it."

I’ve found other Studio Ghibli movies emotionally affecting at times, but wow—I really wasn’t expecting this one to hit me like it did. Immediately cemented as one of those films I’ll come back to whenever I’m struggling with creative burnout. There just aren’t many movies that capture how depressing it can be when art turns into work and ion becomes obligation. Highly recommend this to any creative who’s dealt with self-doubt and the weight of other people's expectations… so, pretty much everyone.

Even aside from its themes, this is just so aesthetically pleasing. As someone who worked at a bakery for years, that little seaside bakery hit me with instant nostalgia. I love how so many Miyazaki films center food and the act of sharing it. Crazy to think how massively successful Marvel movies are now when their first feature length film had a woman try to fuck a duck. This bombed so hard that George Lucas had to sell off part of Lucasfilm’s new animation division to Steve Jobs, which eventually became Pixar. “The stories we tell through art, they are also our resistance. This is how we avoid erasure.”

Looks like I fell seven short of seeing all the Oscar nominees before the ceremony this year, but a lot of films, like this one, were harder to track down than usual. This would pair really well with last year’s Best Documentary winner, 20 Days in Mariupol. That film was much more on the front lines of the Russian invasion and focused on the human cost of war. This one, on the other hand, focuses on a group of artists-turned-soldiers as they navigate their new everyday lives of defending their country.

As an American, I’ve been absolutely disgusted by the way our President has turned his back on the Ukrainian people. To not only rescind but go so far as to say that Ukraine started a war in which they were invaded... it’s fucking abhorrent. If there’s any solace, it’s that Canada and many European countries have stepped up to Ukraine after witnessing Trump’s greed and cowardice these past months. We’ve been betraying ally after ally, and I feel like I’m going insane seeing so little reaction from people.

Anyway, the actual film is very good. The structure is a little messy, but that’s understandable—this is an ongoing conflict, and the film is more about documenting unfolding events than crafting a traditional beginning, middle, and end. I really loved what it had to say about art as resistance. It leaves me with a lot of hope—hope that even in the middle of war zones, humans still have the desire to create art.

🎵But I am ashamed

But I will not stay silent

This might be a weird first thought when writing about this movie, but it has a fantastic soundtrack. I highly recommend giving it a listen and translating the lyrics if you're not a Portuguese speaker. The film does a great job of selecting songs that were both popular at the time and thematically relevant to the story. It’s refreshing to see a movie tackling such heavy subject matter while still having a strong sense of style in both its soundtrack and direction without ever feeling distracting.

I saved this for last among the Best Picture nominees, partly due to accessibility but also because, knowing even a little about Brazil’s history, I was bracing for something completely soul-crushing. And while the film absolutely goes to dark and heavy places, I left the theater feeling surprisingly hopeful. It doesn’t shy away from the horrors of dictatorship, but it also reinforces how vital resistance is, and that people are capable of fighting back against repressive regimes.

Given how many of this year’s Oscar nominated films explored authoritarianism, it’s a sobering reminder that these stories aren’t just history lessons but warnings. The more you learn about world history, the clearer it becomes that being a global citizen first is what matters most. That’s why I love doing this challenge every year and wish more people in the U.S. would be encouraged to look beyond their own borders. The more you engage with stories from around the world, the more you value justice, human rights, and truth—and the easier it becomes to recognize when they’re being threatened. Blind nationalism isn’t patriotism. And as history has shown time and time again, the little people propping up fascist regimes will fall with them.

I might be losing the plot here, but this is one of those movies that leaves you energized rather than defeated. And it’s incredible to see just how much it has in Brazil. Every Oscar-related post is flooded with people saying Fernanda Torres deserves Best Actress, and honestly, I'd be very happy with that result. At the very least, this should take home Best International Feature. Highly recommend and I have a feeling my rating will go up with a rewatch.

"Do you think he just got neutered? Because those notes are really high."

I'm one of the very few people who saw this movie in its original form before they patched the VFX during its theatrical run. So yeah, I know the current version looks like it was made with Snapchat filters, but try to imagine something worse. Just an absolute fever dream of a movie, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed subjecting my friends to.

It’s been six years since I first saw it, and these songs still pop into my head at random, re-annoying me with how ceaselessly they use the word Jellicle without ever getting any closer to explaining what the hell it actually means.

It’s insane how many big names were attached to this project, only for the VFX artists to be given four months to essentially create the whole movie. They were working 90 hour weeks, sleeping under desks, and then, when this disaster finally came out, they were the ones thrown under the bus. Even with more time, they were never going to fix this. The problem is baked into the art design at a conceptual level, and the studio and Tom Hooper are entirely to blame.

The only reason I’m not giving this a ½ star is because Jennifer Hudson’s voice gives me goosebumps during Memory. But yeah—overall, this is one of the worst things ever put to film, considering its budget and cast.

I do plan on seeing a better version of this someday, but even the music itself is frustrating. The “story,” if you can call it that, is just cat after cat talk-singing about themselves. Songs in musicals are supposed to move the plot forward, but here, every time a cat finishes their number, Macavity just takes them away. There’s no progression, just an endless loop of introductions until one of them is deemed worthy of the sweet release of death, I guess. And how am I supposed to care about these weird cat-human hybrids when they can’t emote because they have no eyebrows or foreheads?

You’d think at some point, your brain would just accept the world you’re in, but no. You’ll be an hour in and still actively questioning why some cats have human boobs, why some walk on two legs while others use four, why some wear fur coats while others are naked, and what the hell the scale of anything is. It’s just surreal from start to finish. Dame Judi Dench's fourth wall break to lecture the audience on how to treat their cats legitimately triggered my fight-or-flight.

We were kind of losing it while watching—judging by the fact that we all ed in on Mr. Mistoffelees' song that never ends—and decided to take a BuzzFeed quiz on which Cats character we’d be. Four out of five of us got Macavity. I don’t know what that says . Personally, I was hoping for Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat. And yeah, I hate that I know all their names because I’ve seen this twice now.

A cat might not be a a dog, but Cats is dogshit.

-I haven't had a hard-on since I started running this place. Closest I got was Sea World. Porpoise got me hot.
-What the fuck you telling me that for?

We decided to theme our bad movie night around Razzie Worst Picture winners in anticipation of the Oscars, and when we saw that one starred Demi Moore, it was an easy first pick. Right off the bat, let me just say that while this isn’t good, there’s no way it was the worst movie of ’96.

To me, the worst thing about Striptease is how it thinks it’s progressive by having the dancers correct anyone who calls them strippers or whores, while simultaneously infantilizing them. There’s literally a scene where one of them finds Chutes and Ladders too complicated. It just feels gross that the movie goes out of its way to portray Demi’s character as “above” this world because she’s educated, because she’s a mother, and because she once had a “respectable” job.

And let’s be real: given the Razzies’ track record, this won because Demi was paid $12.5 million (the most any actress had ever been paid at that point) for this movie. It’s just emblematic of the industry’s misogyny. There’s a demand for female sexuality (and therefore money to be made from it), but the second a woman actually cashes in, she’s demonized for it.

Anyway, it does make me appreciate The Substance even more, knowing how the industry treated her specifically. That must have been such a cathartic role for her. I really hope she takes home Best Actress on Sunday.

I really appreciate that the Criterion edition includes a featurette dedicated to contextualizing the "Bojangles" number and the history of blackface. Most of the classic film reference books I own just brushed past it. It's always been my opinion that you need to engage with the uncomfortable parts of film history rather than sweep them under the rug.

That aside, this felt like most of the older dance movies I’ve seen, fantastic dance numbers with a weak plot. The strongest aspect for me is Ginger Rogers. She did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels, and she’s also just incredibly magnetic to watch.

I don’t understand how you can have the budget to shoot in the actual Palace of Versailles but not enough for period accurate wardrobe. It’s supposed to be the 17th century, but the women are running around in 2000s era prom dresses with zippers.

So, this movie is about a secret French princess who’s a master cellist and can talk to mermaids, but the most fun you’ll have is whenever Pierce Brosnan is on screen in a ridiculous wig as "French" King Louis XIV. And I say "French" because while everyone in the movie is attempting an accent, none of them come remotely close to sounding French.

Honestly, the best part about this movie is the chaos behind its production. Benjamin Walker and Kaya Scodelario met on set, got married, and had two kids in the eight-year gap between filming and release. Their oldest was five by the time it finally hit theaters. Why such a long delay? Because the Chinese actress who played the mermaid got caught evading taxes, which caused a major scandal in China. Since the movie was backed by mostly Chinese production companies, they shelved it until the controversy died down.

Anyway, after all that, The King's Daughter ended up making just $2.2 million on a $40 million budget. 😬
