Dune: Part Two

You underestimate the power of faith.

A monumental achievement in cinema history that will be talked about for years to come, Villeneuve has cemented himself as one of the best sci-fi directors and best directors ever. Dune Part Two ramps up everything from the first and achieves what a sequel should, everything bigger and better. Finally got around to watching this with my girlfriend and can definitely say it’s one of my favorites of this year and possibly ever.

I loved the large scale the story went into and how action packed it is after the setup from the first. The story is amazing (credit to Frank Herbert) and it really made me wish I could read the books. Things definitely went a direction I wasn’t expecting and it was a joy to watch Paul become Muad'Dib and see his change as the story progresses. The final battle was insane to behold and I can’t imagine it in the theaters and IMAX. The sandwork attack on Arakeen was incredible and blew me away. Some of my other favorite scenes were the beginning fight between the Harkonnen and Fremen (loved the Berserk style eclipse shot in this), Paul’s first ride on the sandstorm, the aerial shot of Paul walking through the Fremen, the various Fremen attacks on the Harkonnen and their equipment, and my favorite scene and sequence was the entire Geidi Prime part and fight in the colosseum.

Chalamet really killed it as Paul in this even more so than the first and he had even more range in this. I really enjoyed Zendaya having more material to work with in this and enjoyed seeing her and Paul’s relationship develop and change. I’m excited to hopefully see her play an even bigger role in Part Three. The whole cast should be commended for their roles in this, I love how the cast was expanded even more in this. I loved seeing Florence Pugh, Lea Seydoux, Austin Butler, and Christopher Walken show up for this and loved seeing Javier Bardem and Rebecca Ferguson have bigger roles.

The cinematography and art direction in this is a sight to behold. It’s even a step up from Part One. Everything feels so grand and really feels like you’re stepping into another universe. Greig Fraser is an amazing cinematography and his style fits really well with Villeneuve in my opinion. His eye for the camera in this fits really well with how big of a scale Dune is. The Geidi Prime sequence is gorgeous and the use of black and white in it really makes it stand out from the rest of the film. I really enjoyed how creative a lot of Paul’s visions are and how visually stimulating they are. The shots of Paul’s sister throughout were really cool to me. I can’t wait to take in the gorgeous cinematography of this again with a rewatch. The soundtrack is just as amazing as the first and the sound design is top notch whether it be one of the best soundtracks Zimmer has made (along with the first) or the use of voices for seems like Paul’s visions it all truly creates such a magical, psychedelic, ethereal, and otherworldly feeling.

Villeneuve’s Dune films are some of the best sci-fi films ever created and will go down in cinematic history. I love them both a ton and can’t wait to rewatch them many times. I really do wish there were extended versions, especially for 2 cause I feel like some stuff could’ve used some more exposition to make things more clear. I can’t wait for Part 3 and am so glad it’s being made.
