Uh, the haircuts in this movie are nice. Look, to quote someone smarter than me, I’m not made of stone. The person writing this review had Ghostbuster as their dream job in Kindergarten. I’m aware I like this movie more than I probably should, but we all have our vices… one of mine just happens to be Ghostbusters. It’s frankly strange that Ghostbusters took off like it did, it’s a damn weird movie. While Afterlife hints at that weirdness (the possessed Callie asking the stupidly-named Podcast if he’s the Keymaster while caressing his face was a very weird and dark joke), it’s mostly just bland sitcoms bits.

The whole joke of Ghostbusters is that the existence of ghosts doesn’t really change the world because the only thing people are worried about is if it’ll hold up traffic or raise taxes. They saved the world, but they still have to pay for the property damage. Which makes the film more realistic than most would think. I don’t really feel that energy in Afterlife. They have a run-in with law enforcement once, but that’s about it in of red-tape. I guess if you count Callie as the mayor stand-in, but it’s not a joke, it’s a studio-mandated fracture in the family unit before the third act. Ghostbusters: Afterlife cares more about Ghostbusters than it really should.

It’s just a lazy movie, which sucks because I think it had the potential to be more. I actually liked the kid actors, especially McKenna Grace as Phoebe. But when was the last time the writers saw Ghostbusters? Because I have to wonder why Ray Stantz, on par with Egon as the most ionate Ghostbuster, would not be interested in an entire town built by Ivo Shandor? Peter wouldn’t really care, Winston would if the paycheck was there (which it wasn’t), but Ray would have definitely been there by Egon’s side. Really, Ray should have been in Egon’s role, but we all know why Egon was picked. I have plenty of other issues that are similar, but I’ll save you the spiel because I assume most of my “audience” isn’t that into Ghostbusters

To an extent, I can tolerate lazy writing and so-so filmmaking, but yeah, digital necromancy is where I draw the line; no matter how much it warms the cockles of my heart. It’s disappointing because I rather liked how Egon’s spirit was used throughout the film as a helpful, guiding spirit. The scene where he helps Phoebe fix the proton pack is my favorite in the whole movie, and the scene where he leads Callie to the basement being right beside that. They managed to tell the story and sell the emotion without pulling the “Hey, look! They brought back [deceased actor]!” card. I just didn’t need to see one of my heroes as a kid digitally resurrected for a two-star movie. But I’ll give it a heart because some vices are hard to get rid of.

For what Cyborg She is, which is still somewhat of a mystery to me, it's perfectly fine, even if it's not entirely for me. If this were about forty minutes shorter, it would've gone down smoother. I was already worn out by the hour mark, so the last hour really dragged for me. There's an interesting thread about how the (often forced) transition from quiet, close-knit towns to giant, suffocating metropolises isolates and alienates the population to the point where they're absolutely desperate for any connection whether it's real or not, and often act out in violent, self-destructive ways. Jiro responds to this by Terminator-ing his own Manic Pixie Dream Girl to fix his life and the lives of others arbitrarily à la Back to the Future. The next logical step would be that the "Dream Girl" slowly gains consciousness and breaks free of his programming, but it stops just short of that because the "Robit" needs to learn how to love (and also more time-travel twists at the end for good measure). Some good gags though (the razor-sharp hair, which never shows up again, unfortunately, and the chalk-throwing professor being my favorites).

ittedly, I’m more familiar with Macbeth the play than I am with its various film adaptations. I have no clue how this compares to Welles or Polanski. Strictly speaking on Coen’s version, it’s played a bit too straight for my personal tastes, but the deep, dark, angular (and very German) shadows, it’s intimate and abstract horror, and some of the performances are good enough for me. While certain visual and performative subtleties are necessary from its transition from stage to screen, I think they’re holding this back from being really special. Denzel plays a mighty but strikingly distinct Macbeth. The mutability of theatre is one of my favorite aspects of it, so Denzel delivering his dagger speech will surely be different from anyone else’s because no one else is Denzel and Denzel is not anyone else. Kathryn Hunter, who played a very good Puck in Julie Taymor’s production of Midsummer, plays a similarly good Weïrd Sister(s) — creepy yet incredibly alluring. Additionally, the expansion of Ross’s characterization was appreciated as it shook up a few things (did they need shaking? who’s to say, but it was neat).

Is there something you’ve been interested in your entire life? I can imagine the answer to that is yes. And you spend large chunks of your life absorbing everything you can about it, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. There’s certainly people that like it a little more than you do, or even a lot more, but the ion and love you have for it is still there.

Now, imagine someone makes a movie about that obsession and every single point or idea it has is something you’ve already explored ten times over, but the wider reaction to that film is fairly positive and treats it like it’s something brilliant and subversive. You can read between the lines here.

It’s just the Chuck Norris joke for almost two hours, which has been an insufferable ongoing joke with the Batman characters for years: “Who would win: Batman with prep time or Goku? Well, Batman. Why? Cause he’s Batman!”

I think the writers read a WhatCulture article by an underpaid college graduate that needed the work and just did bare minimum research into Batman and felt the inclusion of characters like Magpie, Crazy Quilt, and Egghead were important but not Damien Wayne or Cassandra Cain. They had seven decades of continuity to work with and most of it amounts to minor background details.

Also, why needlessly shoehorn in Gremlins, King Kong, and The Wizard of Oz as villains because, uh, Batman didn’t have the rogues gallery, I guess? What did I really expect from a toy commercial? And did the writers also happened to read Bruce Timm’s fan-fiction where Bruce and Barbara sleep together because teasing that for even a second makes me sick. Ugh.

“Hey, it’s like Batman and Joker are in a codependent relationship! And wait, is Batman truly helping Gotham?” Yeah, this was a topical and trendy outlook for nerds to debate, like, over a decade ago. It’s the same old hat as “Batman and Robin sleep in the same bed and are gay lol,” it’s just boring. These ideas can be explored sufficiently, but not in this format.

This is the result of people acting like The Lego Movie was some great subversive piece of art, and the same thing happened to this. It can have a nice message, but the film’s attitude is juvenile, which limits real introspection into the character. The film equivalent of The Big Bang Theory, yet that show somewhat manages a tiny bit more maturity and depth. Just read the comics. Or you can watch The Animated Series (if you ignore Tim’s forced ship), though, The Brave and the Bold is also quite good.

The only good thing about this movie is that LEGO went all-out with the actual sets and collectible minifigure series. Like, holy shit, the new molds and prints were just supreme. And the builds! I really wish I had that Arkham set (but if the rumors are true, we’re getting a new one). My favorite detail is that Catman’s head is based on the old 2006 Batman/Bruce head. It was the last time LEGO showed real love for DC comics and now we just get two Batman sets a year and a Superman one if we’re lucky. And, really, part of that is due to this film. So, actually, fuck this movie.

I finished this at three in the morning, and since I'm already sleep deprived from the stress of finals and graduating soon, I figured I'd better sleep on it. Which I imagine would make Detective Dormer extremely jealous. I tend to be a cynic when it comes to Christopher Nolan with Oppenheimer and Memento being the only two films that really stand out to me and everything else just falls off to the wayside, really.

So, color me surprised that I happened to really dig this. I threw this on because of Criterion Channel's recent "Coastal Thrillers" collection (which I'm going to watch the rest of because I've just now come to the realization that I really, really love Coastal Thrillers – Shutter Island, The Fog, The Lady from Shanghai!). Insomnia's story is so tightly wound that it doesn't surprise me at all that Nolan wanted to take a crack at it (hell, I want to as well, I love everything about it) which makes me even more interested to check out the original Norwegian film at some point.

It also doesn't surprise me that Nolan is really proud of this. You get to see Al Pacino and Robin Williams go blow for blow, but that's not to overshadow the great ing cast. Pacino's performance wouldn't be nearly as good if he didn't have Swank, Tierney, or Isabelle to bounce off of. On that note, during the last scene in Dormer's hotel room, I thought it was interesting to give the film's most important line (imo) to Tierney's character, especially considering the director's reputation for underwritten female characters. With Insomnia, I realize that Nolan and I have far more in common than I realized. Who doesn't love a sleepy, coastal noir about justice and guilt where what you see isn't always what's actually there?

P.S. Originally, Jonathan Demme was attached to direct this and, while I like Nolan's version, I'm so goddamn pissed that that never happened.

Context, context, context.

Robert Strange McNamara is not some fictional supervillain like Red Skull, an uncompromising megalomaniacal Nazi who wants to destroy anything that doesn't align with his ideology. If anything, he's more of a Doctor Doom type, a delusional man who's done terrible things because he believed they were the right choice.

I hesitate to call any human being a monster, whether they're a serial killer or a self-proclaimed war criminal. Our enemies aren't monsters, they're humans – they like a good book; they enjoy a relaxing day with loved ones; they have a favorite meal. And I'm glad that Errol Morris just gives McNamara to floor to speak and amount his participation in the deaths of thousands as regretful but necessary.

To me, one of the reasons the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were unnecessary is because the citizens of those cities were not enlisted into the Imperial Japanese Army. Just reverse the roles. If America was bombed in a similar manner to Japan, you would not hear the goddamn end of it. Oh, wait... Well, they bombed us once (on an island that we shouldn't even fucking own), so we have the right to firebomb them as many times as we want, and lets throw thousands of American civilians in internment camps for no other reason than being Japanese.

Additionally, I believe part of the reason why America is often taught a half-hearted apologetic view of the nuclear bombings of those two cities is to delude ourselves into thinking that it was *the* reason Japan surrendered. However, if you really look at the wider context, factors like Russia's emerging presence in the Pacific* and the dwindling of crucial resources, like oil and rubber, placed a lot of pressure on Japan.

The nukes certainly factored in, but they were just one part of a larger picture, and a smaller part than many of us would like to it. And, if we're being honest, the main reason the United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki was to show off our "cool new weapons" to those darn Communists rather than trying to force Japan to surrender. So, yeah, 200,000+ people killed because we wanted to enter a dick-measuring contest with Russia.

It's ironic, really. McNamara's ancestors came to the United States as a result of the Great Hunger – an incredibly tragic event that would not have been nearly as bad if the British government actually helped their suffering neighbors, but decades of unresolved animosity and a lack of empathy caused about a million deaths. In the case of the Great Hunger, the British government is often accused of genocide and while I don't entirely disagree, I don't entirely agree either. If anything, it was accidental genocide. The British did not intentionally bring the disease that decimated the potato crops, but the Corn Laws in place during the first two years of the crisis made food unaffordable to many working class Irish people.

And yet, hundreds of years later, the descendent of the victims of unintentional genocide would intentionally participate in war crimes like the firebombing of dozens of cities in Japan. *That* montage was fucking sickening. While it's good that McNamara feels *some* remorse for his and the nation's actions in war and tries to down lessons he learned – and some of the lessons are genuinely good things to consider – he still gave orders that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people with little ethical justification other than "it could've been worse." But he helped give us seatbelts, so even?

Sure, McNamara was "part of a mechanism," but he was still a conscious part of that mechanism. You can't all the blame to your superiors when you helped and advised them. Yes, Robert McNamara might like his steaks cooked medium, but he also made our army more efficient at killing people, enemy and civilian alike. I guess you have to have something to think about while you use the bathroom. It's evidently clear he wishes he did more to "minimize the damage" – and, I'll it, he is correct in preferring the "damned if you don't" approach – but in hindsight, McNamara had a responsibility and he failed. You can call McNamara a soulless monster, and I wouldn't blame you, but I respect him a little more than 98% of the dumbfucks in "Warshington" now.

*If one looks at the dates – Hiroshima was bombed on Aug. 6th and Russia declared war on Japan two days later – one might think that Russia saw this as their opportunity to attack, but Russia had already planned to enter the Pacific War at the Yalta Conference in early February of 1945, partially as revenge for the Russo-Japanese War.

P.S. Love the poster. McNamara looks like a regular Keyser Soze, aka an asshole.

This review may contain spoilers.

I'm writing this on April 30th, 2025 (I'm gearing up for finals and graduating, so pardon me for being two days late to writing this), which happens to be the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon; when the United States government, frantically and hectically, pulled out of Vietnam, ending the war. After the US vacated, which left behind many POWs and the many South Vietnamese who fought for the US, the North Vietnamese retook Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, and united the country under communist rule. In Vietnam, today is known as Reunification Day.

For decades, the United States was afraid to look itself in the mirror concerning the war in Vietnam. Which I think is partly why history classes tend to not focus on it or the Korean War because they were embarrassments. Korea was a stalemate and Vietnam was a complete failure. But those are just a few blots on a long, long, long list of blots. One of the many blots, of course, was the mishandling of veterans when they came back. And this doesn't apply to just Vietnam, but any war – Korea, The Great War, World War II, etc.

Dead of Night, Deathdream, whatever you want to call it is a very 70s-horror interpretation of those stories, of the boys who come home to family and friends who don't understand the hell the boys are living in. The moment when Andy's sunglasses are ripped off in the third act is a bone-chilling moment. Those eyes, man. Real creepy. And the moment when a grieving mother helps bury her undead son – heartbreaking. Sure, some boys never come home, but which would you pick: dying or living in a hell that you can't escape from?

(Also, very on-brand that Andy resembles the most generic Lego minifigure with the "[Part 3901] Minifigure, Hair, Male Smooth, Reddish Brown" and the "[Part 3626p01] Minifigure, Head Standard Grin Pattern.")

If you asked me where I thought most throuples met in the 1930s, I would’ve guessed a train compartment. I’m just happy to be proven correct just barely thirty seconds after the opening credits end.

I’m beginning to understand why they call it “The Lubitsch Touch” now. There’s a tangible “stamp” on his work that looks, feels, and smells like no one else but Ernst Lubitsch. While reading up, I found that someone had organized a list of various definitions of “The Lubitsch Touch” from filmmakers, writers, scholars, etc. and I want to point out how sensual Peter Bogdanovich’s definition is and how technical Jonathan Rosenbaum’s is:

“It was as famous a monicker in its day as Hitchock's 'Master of Suspense,' although perhaps not as superficial. The phrase does connote something light, strangely indefinable, yet nonetheless tangible, and seeing Lubitsch's films - more than in almost any other director's work - one can feel this certain spirit; not only in the tactful and impeccably appropriate placement of the camera, the subtle economy of his plotting, the oblique dialogue which had a way of saying everything through indirection, but also -- and particularly -- in the performance of every single player, no matter how small the role.” — Bogdanovich

“1) A specifically Eastern European capacity to represent the cosmopolitan sophistication of continental Europeans to Americans -- and with a double edge, as becomes clear in the 'American understood' gag; 2) A critical affection for flawed individuals who operate according to double standards; 3) A graceful way of handling music as an integral part of a film's construction.” — Rosenbaum

It's hard to overstate the importance of John Cassavetes to film history. A titan of independent filmmaking, his work and method would inspire not just his contemporaries, but also future filmmakers. Hell, the last Best Picture winner was made from the cloth of Cassavetes. In spite of all of that, we haven't always gotten along. I like Love Streams and Husbands just fine, but I can't really say the same for Shadows or A Woman Under the Influence. Because of that, I haven't seen a film of his since 2021, and I wanted to change that. New me, new Cassavetes, relatively speaking. It's a damn shame we only have a finite number of films that really lets a great performer like Ben Gazzara shine, and he shines so brightly in The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. There's little gestures and intonations he does that remind me of Steve Martin, and I just think that's great. I also love Timothy Carey. Great ending, too! I could rattle off about it, but everyone and their mother has gone over the parallels between Vittelli and his creator, so I'll spare you that spiel.

I guess I can somewhat take comfort in the fact that Todd Solondz has always been Todd Solondz. Ira Ellis, Solondz’s self-insert, is practically the blueprint for nearly every protagonist of his. It’s certainly got the bone structure of a Solondz film, but it lacks the vicious acidity of his later, more refined works. The Woody Allen comparisons are apt, and I even thought of it briefly while watching Welcome to the Dollhouse, but Allen is nowhere near as dark and dirty. And for an awkward, self-conscious debut, it’s better than it has any right to be.

This review may contain spoilers.

What makes Ryan Coogler’s Sinners so great is that, aside from brief flashes of something terrifying at the start, the film spends its sweet time establishing its characters and environment rather than diving right into the bloody plot. Yes, there's From Dusk Til Dawn, but there's more Ragtime (Walter Hill’s Ragtime lol) than anything. It’s a very deep, dense work, which makes surmising my complete thoughts on a first watch difficult, but here’s some bullet-points:
– We’re all vampires, some of us just more literal than others (Smoke and Stack willingly buying property from a Klansman, essentially funding future “meetings” and bootleg Irish beer; Sammie’s preacher father; the continuous lies/half-truths)
– Delroy Lindo!
– Subjugation persists, even invisibly within language; there’s plenty of obvious examples, but note that Delta Slim uses the term “paddy wagon” at one point.
– Delta Slim recounts a resurfaced traumatic memory to Sammie and Stack, and morphs it into an impromptu song; vocalizing his pain and beating the car door like a drum
– Remmick (from what I gleamed) being pre-Christian Celtic was an interesting detail
– Buddy Guy! That’s all! On that note, the score is magnificent: Filídh, Fire Keepers and Griots; I Lied to You; Magic What We Do (the scene accompanying it is truly great); Hole Up 'Til Sunrise.
– A film about the sin of selling out. We all do it eventually, it just matters on whose and why.

I do have *some* complete thoughts. The way Sinners, and by extension Coogler, the cast, and crew, pays respect to the beautiful, diverse culture of the Mississippi Delta brings a smile to my face. Additionally, Sinners was shot in New Orleans, which is where I’ve spent the past four years (minus some months), which makes it the perfect film to, spiritually, end my time as a college student. What is Sinners if not a mixture of some of my favorite things (genre cinema, blues music, monsters, and hell, I'll throw in my home state of Mississippi as well)? Sinners is fuckin' art, man, and I love art! And Sinners is really about art; art is a response to our history and culture, which then both respond to our art, and so on. But what happens when someone disrupts that long-evolved cycle? What if someone messes with the art's history, or the culture that it thrived in? Nothing good, I can tell you that. It's vital to protect our art partially because it preserves our history. On Spotify, the profile that ed the soundtrack/score to Sinners contains images of newspaper clippings that fill in some details before the events of the film. Once again, the art guides you to the history.

Not the greatest. It takes some time to find its footing, but there’s some laughs along the way. I would like to point out the “falling backdrops that keep falling onto people” gag, which I think is pretty funny and fun in a metaphorical sense — Chaplin is the ultimate disrupter, destroying any possible “fourth walls” between the many acts featured, the audience watching the acts, and the film-audience watching everything; truly a trickster god.

my bread and butter. my comfort zone. my lifelong friend. my boon companion, if you will.

I have a personal rule that dictates that my favorites lists stop at 52 entries (if you guess why, we’ll be good friends) but I couldn’t do it for this one and decided to just do 100.

  1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

The greatest movie ever. The most horrified I’ve ever been during a film, and yes, I count Come and See. The film's horror feels so unfamiliar yet so intimate to me. I don't understand why. But no other horror film captivates me like this one. It’s endlessly fascinating to dissect and to rewatch over and over again. “The inmates run the asylum” in movie form.

  2. The Shining

I might prefer the European version.

  3. Halloween

Of course, you can’t have a favorite horror movie list without this! It definitely didn’t originate the slasher, but not many would disagree that it perfected it.

  4. Spontaneous Combustion

A metaphysical thriller of nuclear proportions. It’s an absolutely brilliant work of nuclear horror, existential dread, and a love-and-betrayal story. The loss of self-control horrifies me, so this movie works for me. Brad Dourif is phenomenal.

  5. Evil Dead II

Seeing this in 35mm made me realize just how much I love this movie. An insane movie.

  6. The Return of the Living Dead

For me, it’s the greatest zombie film ever. It’s doom-and-gloom, punk, and kick-ass.

  7. Bride of Frankenstein

A gothic-horror masterpiece. The greatest of the Universal Monster films. Dr. Frankenstein created life, but that’s the easy part. You can plant a seed and help it grow, that’s also creating life. But what Frankenstein forgot, or rather could never achieve, was to give his creation soul. You can’t forge soul like you can with life as soul is gained through lived experience, time, and proper love. Karloff’s performance makes my heart ache with sadness and pain.

  8. Dawn of the Dead

In the words of Frankenstein, we belong dead.

  9. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

Look, I don’t expect people to see this sequel in the exact same light as its predecessor, as it was never meant to be, but I think it deserves more respect than it often gets by fans of the original. If it was a standalone film, I’m sure it would get more respect today.

  10. Lake Mungo

One of the most terrifying experiences I’ve ever been through and I’ve been in a car crash. Memento Mori, motherfucker.

Every person to play The Doctor is certainly qualily, but what sets the fine from the great is the showrunner and writers. For example, I truly believe Whittaker could’ve been a great incarnation but the writing she was given was just terrible. Under Moffat’s tenure, I felt Capaldi delivered the dialogue better than Smith, which is partially due to the differences in each actor’s Doctor and Moffat’s style at the time.

So, when all the elements are just right — writing, direction, acting, etc. — Doctor Who can become the most magical, exciting, emotional show ever conceived. My favorite episodes today are the ones that make me feel like a kid watching my first episode, like going back in time and ing when I didn’t have any care in the world other than “How’s The Doctor going to get out of this?”

It was cool, nothing fire, nothing broke
Keep simple, nothing tired, nothing old

Showtime’s Yellowjackets is one of my favorite recently-released show. In my obsession, I’ve compiled a list of films that give me vibes and tones of Yellowjackets. Not all of them are 100% accurate (Yellowjackets is definitely not as surreal or chaotic as House, but the story and themes are certainly similar). This list also serves as a recommendation list, like if you enjoy Yellowjackets, then watch these movies!

P.S. Nat rocks.

Transfiguration 4o2x1i David Cronenberg Ranked https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/buckaroobanzai_/list/transfiguration-david-cronenberg-ranked/ letterboxd-list-6126837 Sun, 3 Nov 2019 11:13:16 +1300 <![CDATA[

When speaking about David Cronenberg, one quote from H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulhu” springs to mind, “That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange eons even death may die.” To which, Debbie Harry’s Nicki from Cronenberg’s Videodrome would probably say, “I’ve learned that death is not the end.” That is the entirety of the single conversation within Cronenberg’s body of work — that isn’t to say he isn’t a distinct, versatile filmmaker, because he is, it is rather a testament to his skill that he can have the same conversation, but every instance is unique and powerful in their own way. Or, in one word, transfiguration.

The word "transfiguration" brings to mind the story of Jesus, who climbs to the top of a mountain with some of his apostles and transfigures into a state of light, speaks to Elijah and Moses, and communicates with his apostles about his departure. What's more "body horror" than that, or the immaculate conception? Transfiguration brings wisdom, a greater awareness of your circumstances and place. His filmography is like a spiral, and every subsequent film is a step down towards the center. It’s a filmmaking of phrasing and rephrasing. With every film, he restates the problem and tries to find a better solution. He’s very scientific, in that sense.

My favorite actor and one of my favorite directors. The first film icon. The first film celebrity. His top hat and mustache alone could sell a movie. Chaplin uses his star power to tell painfully human stories like City Lights, or great political ones like The Great Dictator or Monsieur Verdoux. Every physical moment, every facial gesture is meticulously planned and placed accordingly.

  1. The Gold Rush

If not his darkest film, which could go to Verdoux, it might be Chaplin’s most melancholic. Also, 1925 >> 1942

  2. City Lights

The best acted scene in all of cinema in the last scene of this movie, where the Blind Girl recognizes The Tramp after feeling his hand and sleeve.

A boy’s dream gone horribly wrong. A boy reminded of the finite nature of life. A series about the inevitability of death and accepting it when it happens.

"A prog-metal concept album that takes 20+ years to listen to and is still being recorded as you are listening to it. This is the part that gets quiet and spacy and inward and mystical and stuff where people sit around fires and practice their time travel and telekinesis when not rebuilding engines or staring intently at the moon as it goes down in time lapse, hidden away for the time being, pulling the tides along with it like a bed made upon rising. The part of the album that if your friends are talking you might shush them or call their attention to the layers of sonic detail just under the surface or, not needing to be shushed, conversation lapses at just that moment and eyes fix upon some point invisible or barely manifest in this world, gradually resuming, but quieter than before." – nathaxnne, review for Phantasm IV: Oblivion

Through the darkness of future past…
The magician longs to see.
One chants out between two worlds…
“Fire… Walk With Me.”

Twin Peaks, as a whole (Pilot, the show, Fire Walk With Me, The Return), is the best thing Lynch has ever done. So, if you'd like, take out Twin Peaks (1990) and The Return and that's my ranking of Lynch's features.

Also, can Letterboxd decide to keep all of Lynch's shorts or just remove all of them? As for the shorts that are there, positions #36 and below are loosely ranked, while the above shorts are ranked more confidently.

These are movies that sound like or could work as Doctor Who episodes.

(notes are hypothetical titles for these episodes, and I’ll also try to figure which Doctor/Companion pair would fit the episode best; I am also thinking about giving each entry "Classic Who" and "New Who" pairs — WIP)

  • Quatermass and the Pit

    Episode: “The Mysterious Pit”

    Incarnation: The 4th Doctor

    Companion: Sarah Jane

It’s likely the other Quatermass films would fit, but I’ll have to watch them to double-check.

  • Solaris
  • Phantasm
  • Lifeforce

“The Space Vampires” (aka the film’s original title)

  • Rawhead Rex
  • They Live

extended canon

To me, a favorites list should include life-changing movies and soul-nourishing movies. Like, I would say that a high-quality steak and mashed potatoes dish is one of my absolute favorite foods, but would I want it every day? No, that would ruin its allure, but I could definitely eat a bowl of Kraft mac and cheese every day. I couldn’t watch L’argent every day of my life, but I could definitely do the same for Evil Dead II. Your list of favorites should include things that changed who you are and things that remind you of where you’ve been.

  1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

On August 18th, 2022, this took over 2001’s spot as my all-time favorite movie. It was only a matter of time.

It’s very on-brand for me to name my rankings of Chantal Akerman films after a Misfits song, but I think it fits. I thought of it while watching Toute une nuit (A Whole Night), which is, essentially, a film of bittersweet moments aka hybrid moments. Danzig’s lyrics are often nonsense (in a good way) either way, so who cares?!

  1. The Meetings of Anna
  2. Toute une Nuit
  3. News from Home
  4. Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
  5. Je Tu Il Elle

Natani Nez 1n223 John Ford Ranked https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/buckaroobanzai_/list/natani-nez-john-ford-ranked/ letterboxd-list-17238684 Sun, 4 Apr 2021 08:22:45 +1200 <![CDATA[

“With Ford at his best, you get a sense of what the earth is made of, even if the script is by Mother Machree.” - Orson Welles

He started as a ditch digger for his older brother for Universal, then slowly became one of the great filmmakers of all time. For the list title, the Navajo adopted Ford into their tribe because of his consistent dedication to their people. They gave him the name Natani Nez, meaning Tall Soldier. Additionally, Ford’s real last name, Feeney, comes from the Gaelic O Fiannaidhe, meaning soldier.

"'I want to be a tugboat captain,' [Ford] says. But God made him a poet, and he must make the best of that.” - Lindsay Anderson, About John Ford (pg. 25)

“John is half tyrant, half revolutionary; half saint, half Satan; half possible, half impossible; half genius, half Irish…” - Frank Capra

In some moments, my favorite director (a four-way tie between Stanley Kubrick, Tobe Hooper, David Lynch, and the titular soldier). In my estimation, a 5-Star Jack Ford film is, really, a 6-Star film, and his 4-Stars are actually 5's, et cetera.

Interviewer: “Why did [Ford] achieve all this?”
Tag Gallagher: “Mad, crazy mixture.”
[…]
TG: Everything in Ford’s films in an argument. No idea’s ever proposed that at the same time he doesn’t propose the opposite idea.

  1. The Long Gray Line

"The Long Gray Line is a glorification of life in the illumination of death" - Tag Gallagher

    (source: vimeo.com/422612221)

  2. The Quiet Man
  3. Wagon Master

    A tone-poem about community.

  4. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

    Memory’s a melancholic bitch.

  5. The Searchers

A society built upon violence and exploitation begets a society that adheres to those values. The cycle must be broken; these values have to die but some people hold onto them too strong.

  6. How Green Was My Valley

A film that uproots the deepest and foggiest of memories, notions of experiences, and feelings of comfort and melancholy.

  7. Donovan's Reef
  8. My Darling Clementine

    Oh, my darling…

  9. Young Mr. Lincoln

"Suppose some truant good fairy were to ask me … ‘Is there some American film you’d like me to make you the author of – with a wave of my wand?’ I would not hesitate to accept the offer, and I would at once name the film that I wish I had made. It would be Young Mr. Lincoln directed by John Ford." - Sergei Eisenstein

  10. Fort Apache

"This isn't a country for glory, Owen."
