Deadpool & Wolverine

A comeback for MCU?

See my Deadpool review HERE.

The direction is decent in some areas, but it is not consistent. While the direction does generally capture the Deadpool spirit, however, there are things that should have been done much better. The script is quite solid. When it comes to Deadpool, you will know that he will mock pop culture and events surrounding the X-Men. This is no different as he makes jokes on Disney taking over Fox, the MCU, the multiverse and Wolverine in particular. It is interesting to see behind the scenes of Deadpool wanting to the Avengers. Deadpool was suppose to be living in his normal life with the characters we had seen in the previous Deadpool movies, but he had to commit to enter into the multiverse with Wolverine or his closest friends coming to extinction. There were frankly tons of shocking moments that took me by a huge surprise with the cameos and a large number of Deadpools. The Deadpool and Wolverine fighting with other Deadpools is a nice homage to Oldboy hallway fight.

The jokes, like the other Deadpool movies, can be a hit and a miss. There are some genuinely funny scenes, especially when Deadpool takes a stab at Disney and the MCU characters. Cassandra Nova is quite menacing. I liked on the idea of other Marvel characters not in MCU being sort of extinct. The Mad Max apocalyptic setting with Antman serving as a hub for Cassandra is insanely weird. The fight scenes between Deadpool and Wolverine is intense, bloody and fun! Also, the opening credits is absolutely dope! There are some nice development for Wolverine himself. Just don't expect to see much of the characters you see in the previous Deadpool films.

Ryan Reynolds still maintains the Deadpool energy we know for nearly a decade. And Reynolds played some other interesting characters too I don't want to spoil. Hugh Jackman is amazing with his gruff and unstoppable force that brought back to the comic book origins. Emma Corrin is amazing and a sight to behold. Channing Tatum as Gambit steals the spotlight when he appears on-screen. And woohoo to hear Wesley Snipes quoting on his iconic Blade quote! Is it also a curse that he mentioned there is only one Blade and MCU cancelled the Blade movie? I enjoyed the cast.

The cinematography and visual effects are the downer. This movie looks ugly as hell and the lighting is really poor. The backgrounds looks soft and blurry. The CGI of the Mad Max apocalyptic setting is so damn atrocious. Some cool use of CGI, but most of them are lacklustre. The first Deadpool looks decent, the second Deadpool has cool colours thanks to Leitch's John Wick style and this... I don't know what happened.

The editing is generally good. I don't have much of an issue with the pacing and I was entertained throughout the runtime. The action scenes are edited terrifically without any jarring moments. The soundtrack is a banger. There are plenty of needle drops that gives the energy of the fights and matches to what is happening on-screen. The soundtrack made the film more of an exhilarating experience. The sound design is a blast with so many sword fights, superheroes being crushed and the forces from Cassandra. It is so cool to see the comic book faithful Wolverine costume finally showing on the silver screen (and Deadpool mocking it).

I don't think the MCU is going to go back to its heyday after this film. Despite the atrocious aesthetics, I still had a delightful time with this film. Recommended!
