Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

2025

★★½ Watched

two incredible stunt sequences encased in leaden, convoluted, textureless dreck. really miss when these things were about spycraft and when every scene wasn’t an endless explanation of literally everything that was happening. we’re reminded of the astronomically high stakes every ten minutes to the point of exhaustion.

I find it very telling that a big, heavy plot point hinges on the US potentially bombing one of its own major cities, then making a point that they’d have to choose one,…

I ride or die for Linklater but I feel like I’m taking crazy pills seeing the rave reviews for this. Are we this desperate for [movie stars, the screwball comedy, horny cinema, etc] that we think this is the real deal?

Longlegs

2024

★★½ Watched

Feels like it’s never been easier to make a movie look good. LONGLEGS looks great and effects a chilling, beautiful atmosphere, though it’s all tempered by that nagging feeling of just how much is being lifted from its obvious inspirations. It’s clearly more interested in the aesthetics of true crime/satanism/detective work than it is in actually making any of those genre elements drive the story.

Would have loved to see the movie promised by the marketing/the first 20 minutes. Instead, this winds up shooting at about 3 separate targets, hitting none of them.
