Jai Courtney Oscar campaign, who says no?
]]>Backstory was rough, flamethrower battle was transcendent. The cult in this movie is just.. Austria?
]]>Sooooo, this has to be Ari Aster’s fave. Borderline masterpiece. So unique. The music elevates it.
]]>Unfairly suffered from “this feels derivative because I saw all the coming of age movies it inspired before I saw it” syndrome. Still really enjoyed it. Extra bump for the Oregon wilderness and incredible kid acting.
]]>These Philippou boys love a firm table.
]]>Subway trip is an all time prod-placement bit. Sat in the front row and I think seeing Tim Robinson’s facial expressions at that scale rewired my brain. Will probably get a CT Scan to check the damage.
]]>First hour was an absolute mess, but look, I’m just in on this franchise. Biplane sequence felt like a snuff film. Pure insanity. Submarine sequence is also absurd. Go see it on the biggest screen and get ya money’s worth.
]]>First time seeing it on the big screen. The rain scenes are quite striking and it uses extreme quiet so effectively.
I just respect the swings Danny Boyle is taking so much. Makes me happy that a movie this unique made 10x its budget in 2002 and has stuck around in the cultural zeitgeist this long.
]]>Delightful. Features many of my ancestors.
]]>This is the one film in the franchise where I’m a bit below consensus. Still enjoyable, though.
]]>Out of all the needle drops, it’s Tangerine for me.
]]>Better than I ed.
]]>Ethan Hunt smashing into The Orient Express, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?
Edit: When Director of Central Intelligence, Eugene Kittridge says “Impossible Mission Force” out loud, my jaw dropped. I’ve been living with the IMF acronym for too long and he really recentered my focus by spelling it out.
]]>Fine.
]]>Never bring a knife to a rat fight.
]]>There’s some genuinely good filmmaking in this. Much better than any Marvel film I’ve seen in a while.
Lewis Pullman looks like he has a perpetual tobacco dip in his cheek/lip and I can’t get past it.
]]>This doesn’t work, but I was full-on in love with Zooey Deschanel in the early-mid aughts.
]]>We used to make great films in this country.
]]>“Wow.”
]]>Might fuck around, have a mid-life crisis and buy the Steve Zissou boat.
(But in all seriousness, this movie broke my brain in high school and it means a lot to me.)
]]>Ben Affleck did copperhead road in the film The ant 2.. is the type of nonsense, stilted phrase you’d hear in a dream. But it actually happened.
5 star scene (2.5 star movie).
]]>The last time I saw this in theaters, I was 6 years old. Honestly, it may have been the spark that ignited my love for movies and theaters. What a love letter to practical effects and tasteful, limited CGI. This medium can still feel magical, baby.
P.S. Never doubt Big Jim.
]]>We love a mid-budget, adult genre exercise from a world class director. Really enjoyed the music elements, but felt like the plotting was a little muddy and I just think the twin thing is played out. Give us two distinct actors staring into each other’s eyes if you want the scene to move us.
I hope this makes all the money, tho.
]]>That’s the same face I make when I walk up to a strip mall pizzeria and realize it’s closed.
Vibiest LA crime movie of all time.
]]>Incredible film. Please bring back studio comedies. Need Tom Cruise to be weird in movies again.
]]>Well, I’m not not going to order a grain alcohol and rainwater at the bar this weekend.
This was my first full watch and even though some of the humor didn’t land, and it felt a little messier than expected, I still really enjoyed it. George C. Scott was the standout for me.
]]>Extremely stripped-down and well conceived. Visceral theater experience. Sort of a blank slate that you can project your views onto. To me, it’s certainly an anti-war film.
]]>A nostalgic fave that still works for me on an emotional level. Totally understand critiques about it softening the racial tensions of that time, but for a Disney sports movie made in 2000, I think it does its job quite deftly. Denzel is on fire, the younger cast is great (including Hayden Panettiere), and Will Patton shines. The real MVP is the score. Probably a top 10 main theme in movie history for me. Still gives me goose bumps.
]]>True star power.
Also, I hope Aunt Birdie sold her Intel stock in 1998.
]]>Movie drivers I’d want in a pivotal moment:
-Ryan Gosling from Drive
-Little Toby from Drop
..
That’s it, that’s the list.
Tough look for the name Blake :S
See you all at the Chest Rockwell Magic Show.
]]>A horror film.
Lighting went so hard.
]]>Not enough nudity.
]]>Traumatic theater experience.
]]>A movie that will make you feel real bad about leaving your dog to go out and see a movie.
]]>A meandering masterpiece.
]]>We love a project.
]]>Enjoyed the build, but it didn’t quite come together for me.
]]>Sophia kinda just makes one type of movie over and over again, but the vibes are always solid.
]]>An important film.
]]>Kinda bad, kinda fun, mostly chaotic.
]]>Oooof, can’t say I enjoyed this. Felt like a good ending in search of a movie. And that search led to a “give me a slick (but not stylish) derivation of every A24 film ever released” prompt into chatGPT. Malkovich is such a fun presence per usual, but even he can’t save those monologues. The satire is all nibble, no bite.
“Dina Simone” is a bop, tho.
]]>Oscillated between daydreaming about how life is meaningless and scream-thinking “why don’t they just punt this little motherfucker!”
]]>Michael Fassbender in muck boots, a sweater, and a newsboy cap, taking his hand-crafted skiff out on a placid pond ❤️
That’s it, that’s the review.
]]>The sheer amount of 90s dudes throwing 99 mph in this movie is truly incredible. Great ensemble and a crackling script.
]]>Sickest motorized wheelchair to ever hit the pavement. Everett McGill is so fun. Gary Busey is.. doing Gary Busey things!
1/2star nostalgia bump.
]]>Fantastic script.
]]>So wild that 2-3 years after starring in Jurassic Park, Sam Neill read this script and was like, “Yes, absolutely.”
]]>A tonal/thematic mess, but I had fun. Extra half star because I love to see an original sci-fi film.
]]>The Mann docking sequence is absolutely face-melting in a theater. Great film.
Note: there’s never been a less intimidating man wielding a tire iron than Topher Grace’s character in this movie.
