Was this a comedy? Maybe!
It was such a silly movie, and maybe a good enough representation for women at the time. I wouldn’t say it translates to the present but I will take the effort.
I’ve never participated in a Nuit Blanche activity and I’m glad I did this time! Thanks to my wife L for inviting to this unique experience. It was a lot of fun to see so many creative movies I would have never heard of if it wasn’t for the editing of this project

In a world where there’s Emilia Perez, I’m thankful we have Universal Language
Watched this at a screening in Cinema du Parc with a QA with some of the cast and crew.
The most movie of the year so far!! This is the kind of film that really grabs all art forms and mushes them together into one masterpiece! As the host was saying, cinema is a universal language.
The blending of cultures WITH RESPECT and CARE is really outstanding.

Rewriting my review cause i can’t believe this is a ‘movie’
This thing is soooo bad, i almost didn’t finish it after 10 minutes and that was a lot.
Let’s start by going with the bad script: you introduce Rita without giving any substance of who she is, she gets the most stereotypic ‘angry female’ characteristics and call it a day. We get introduced to what “womanhood” is by singing about being interrogated of her parenthood plan, her body, her skin color, and her career. She’s a woman!! She’s even on her period!! Her whole characterization is being SAID and not SHOWN.
This might be intrusive, but i found it confusing why Emilia (Manitas at that point) has already started hormone treatment and shows her bust to Rita how her body has transitioned, yet her spouse doesn’t know she’s going through this? You’re telling me your body is changing and the closest person to you doesn’t know??
Why is a person who works in the law the correct person to help out someone who wants to transition? And why is she flying to different clinics around the world to research and end up choosing a surgeon who’s a transphobe???
Later in the movie we now have Emilia getting her ‘s’ to help her investigate and locate all the missing people… S? how does a person who faked their death have s?? SPECIALLY s who are also criminals? How does you justify your money??
Now let’s talk about representation. Starting with the the only good thing they did was cast a trans actress for this role. Literally the only authenticity this thing has, because none of the leads are Mexican WHEN THE MOVIE IS SET IN MEXICO AND THEYRE SUPPOSED TO BE MEXICAN. They have not even an ounce of effort in trying to get some of the slang and accent on.
I’m not trans and I can’t speak for the community, but in my eyes it felt like a bad representation to have a criminal transition and escape their past. It kinda reads as their reason to transition, and not from a gender affirming position.
I’m from latin america and lived in Mexico for many years, and this representation of the country felt so negative. It’s rooted in stereotypes, misinformation, and like seeing the culture as a saturated, exotic costume.
Another thing to dislike about it is how it's supposed to be a musical. Both the script and the "lyrics" (and this should just be said as script, cause theres no songs really) had to be done in french and then just google translate them to Spanish, cause they make no sense.
Ill finish my rant now, but I have to say that it makes me so angry and sad seeing a "movie" made by foreigner, misrepresent a culture and language win so many awards.

Magical Realism!! yes!! although i didn’t love it? i can see the style of guadanino through and through with a lot of stuff out of his comfort zone. Many music sequences reminded me of ‘we are who we are’, and it had the country scenery of ‘call me by your name’ . But the plot didn’t captivate me as i didn’t quite understand if this was a movie about exploration, acceptance, or yearning.

this movie made me think and feel so many things. As someone who’s been drawing forever and then been told multiple times how talented i am, sometimes encountering someone else in your world with better skills than you strikes something in you, in my case it never made me practice 200 times harder, but made me feel like i’m not as good as people tell me i am.
I always look back at my experience in college and how i finally met peers with skills, dreams, and experiences similar to mine. And how beautiful the relationships i struck there, we encouraged and challenged each other, and at the same time we bonded and created some beautiful friendships. Now in my 30s I’m still craving the same. I’m thankful I work in a creative industry, but I yearn for those connections where I’m being challenged and ed as I had in my 20s.
This movie was a love letter to art, and all the hardships and messy relationship you have with it. And to your friends, who will always be your biggest fans and inspire you to keep on living

Comparing it to the book, I much preferred the character to not have any backstory and be delusional to everyone’s worry in the town and the house. Give me the tragic ending of him being traumatized by seeing his family die!!
