]]>RIP Ed Gale
Actually not the ableist embarrassment I'd been led to believe and its notoriety has only been gained by it having a "cult film" status from sitting outside mainstream standards about a subject most "normies" find uncomfortable.
It's still not great, but the acting is what keeps it from sinking below averageness.

]]>An excellent sex-positive contrast to the previous film.
Problematic, sure, but rich in its storytelling and a superb script performed with real heart and intelligence by the entire cast. Looked incredible blown up on the big screen in 4k.
Susan Tyrell forever!! <3
]]>Yuck. Body shaming can fucking rot AFAIC.
]]>Had been on my radar for years, so pleased to see this on a big screen first viewing.
Aside from that too long ending, this totally delivered the 'Sqatchy goodness! Shaggy, over-serious, vivid, gooey, a little creepy - all in good measure. Awesome!
]]>This feels like a film made inside the universe of FIGHT CLUB by a small arm of the Northern Irish chapter.
Not good filmmaking by any stretch of imagination, more an eye-watering vanity vehicle.
]]>Levesque's involvement as Art Director/Prod Designer on many of Russ Meyer's more visually comical movies really shines through here.
Very solid WIP picture, that hits the right beats to satisfy.
Could have done without the cat cruelty though.
]]>Inspiring ambitious dad-bod sword-epic ion project.
Very impressive effects for what looked to be a very meagre budget in every other department.
]]>Awkward action and a bit over talky, but very fun with a crowd with some super exteriors that date it specifically to time & place.
]]>The cornerstone of 50's sci-fi clumsy-effects talky-scentist movies!

]]>What an entirely toothless start to the season, cribbing off so many of the very clever ideas that have gone before in the most predictable of ways.
]]>THAT is how you make a biopic about an author AND adapt their works for the screen AT THE SAME TIME!!
Slightly creaks under the seams of its own cleverness and over-indulgence, and certainly bites off more story than the runtime allows it to chew, but beautiful to look at and a great investigation of male beauty without teetering too far into high camp silliness.
And, as much as I love Phillip Glass, I think this would have been better served by a more sparing experimental indigenous score.
]]>RIP James Foley
"I'm gonna defend my grandfather."
"That's a conflict of interest, son, you can't."
[credits roll]
There, I fixed it for you.
]]>Absolutely Coogler's masterpiece, but also career bests of pretty much all of the cast (especially MBJ and Seinfeld)
I LOVED how it shorthanded certain beats that were already inside audience expectations, but by the time realise what the film is doing, its kinda too late so we just feel so much more for these characters because we are already so invested in their lives. I'd actually compare a lot of the early storytelling here to exposition in any of the great Irwing Allen disaster movies as far as character development goes.
Perfect period detail. Dirty and contempraneous in equal measure.
That early tracking shot crossing the road from store to store could not have been achieved without every single department firing at top of their game.
Cinema rarely gets better than this.

]]>Sure, the filmmaking is bold, with interesting choices, solid performances and decent non-linear plotting, but this is only original or edgy if your only frame of reference for this kind of cinema doesn't extend beyond celebratong Quentin Tarantino movies as the highest point of the art form.

At this stage I'm working on a theory, so this list is for research purposes. I don't have any particular results in mind, but do have a mild hunch about why particular films fall to the bottom that isn't based on popularity.

]]>Firstly, a couple of subjective qualifiers:
1) I was working for a local distributor as Assistant Publicist for part of 2021 and 3 of the titles below I helped with social media and distribution on to varying degrees (THE JUSTICE OF BUNNY KING was the one I worked on the most -> PIG was one I pushed hard and championed -> MASS was viewed in the situ of making decisions of how to distribute)
2) The last entry is a short film made by a close friend which resonated with me down the years strongly.
None of these are in any particular order - except for #1 which came in just under the finishing line of 2021 and is the only film of the year that I've awarded a full 5 stars.
I wasn't able to see a lot in cinemas this year, due to COVID, but when I did it usually had a strong effect on adding stars to a rating.

]]>NTIFF 2021: NOT the New Zealand International Film Festival!
With the 2021 Whānau Mārama NZIFF postponed from its traditional winter date until later this year, I started brainstorming a viewing challenge/opportunity that could take its place.
I encourage anyone missing NZIFF this winter to participate in the 100% unofficial and und NTIFF aka NOT THE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. NTIFF 2021 runs from 8 July to 31 August, with 30 core films and some extra credit options!
Before we get started, one important note. While I'm not encouraging piracy generally, I specifically and emphatically discourage pirating of any film released since January 2020 overseas that hasn't had an official release in NZ. There are many films that had festival releases last year that might still play NZIFF, and the purpose of this is to celebrate NZIFF, not undercut the potential audience of any film that might play the festival later this year.
Anyway: this year's programme!
OPENING NIGHT (8 July)
1. A film viewed at a 2021 NZIFF venue (Michael Mann's THIEF is showing at the Hollywood Avondale, just saying!) or rented from a VOD service run by a 2021 NZIFF venue such as Roxy On Demand or Academy On Demand.
CENTERPIECE DOUBLE FEATURE: Bill Gosden Tribute
2. A NZIFF 2018 selection you haven't seen (Bill Gosden's final year as a curator)
3. A Bill Gosden selection from his BFI Top Ten or another Gosden favourite
AOTEAROA
4-5. one 21st century feature drama and one feature documentary from Aotearoa, at least one of which prominently features Te Reo Māori
FEATURE RETROSPECTIVE
6-8. Three films you've never seen, all by the same Asian filmmaker
TRIBUTE SCREENING
9. A film by Monte Hellman, Richard Rush, Bertrand Tavernier, or featuring an actor or actress that died in 2021.
WORLD FOCUS
10. A film from Romania
11. A film from Iran
12. A film from Africa
13. A film from a country you've never seen a film from before
14. A "slow cinema" film
CANNES CELEBRATION
15-17. Three films by three different directors selected for Cannes 2021 (any section) that you've never seen before
18. A previous Palme D'Or winner you haven't seen
INCREDIBLY STRANGE
19. A non-English language action film
20. A previous Incredibly Strange-section film or a film by a filmmaker who's had a film screen at Incredibly Strange that you've never seen before
FRESH (all films since 2015)
21. A first time American indie film from last five years (cannot be Oscar nominated or have more than one "name" actor)
22. A film by an Indigenous filmmaker
23. A film by a LGBTQIA+ filmmaker
24. A Film about a current conflict
OTHERS!
25. A documentary about filmmaking
26. A 21st century Berlinale Golden Bear winner
27. An animated feature - non-Hollywood, non-Ghibli
28. A non-English language film set in a picturesque place
29. A film from any Letterboxd member's NZIFF best picks by year you've never seen. (Doug Dillaman, Steve Austin, Jacob Powell, and link yours in the comments and I'll add it here!)
CLOSING NIGHT
30. A silent film by Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Lois Weber, Fritz Lang or F.W. Murnau
BONUS:
31: A film by a filmmaker who's been a previous guest of NZIFF
32-36: Five Kiwi shorts, at least one fully in Te Reo
37-40: Four international shorts, at least one animated
FAQs:
* How do I participate? Copy this list, tag it NTIFF, pick your films, and when 8 July arrives, start watching! Link this original list in the description, thanks.
* Do I have to watch them in order? Not at all. The only preferred constant is watching the opening night film on 8 July to create a sense of occasion. (NZIFF historically hosts its Auckland opening night on the second Thursday of July.) But if that doesn't work for you, that's fine too.
* (X) criteria doesn't work for me because (Y)!!! Okay. Switch it up if it doesn't work for you, but make it clear what your replacement criteria was, and try to make it something in the spirit of NZIFF.
* I want to watch more than one film that (is from Romania/by an LGBTQIA+ filmmaker/etc)! Sweet! Fit in as many as you can to the criteria!
* Can a film count in multiple categories? That's not really the intent, and also makes it very difficult in the Letterboxd context to track on a list.
* I don't have time to watch 30 films but I still want to participate! Cool! Watch what you can! Like the actual NZIFF, it's not about what you miss: it's about what you see.

]]>My interest in cinema, and by extension NZIFF, began around the mid-90s when I was training as an actor. I really started getting into genre and "cult" movies in the early 2000s and the festival has kept me wrapped warmly in its embrace every winter. Indeed, it was the motivation to move me from Christchurch to Auckland in 2007 and I don't regret the decision in the slightest.
(Note: a lot of the films on this list, especially those pre-1991(??), were not viewed at the festival but as an active member of Film Society (both Chch & Auck) for some years, catching up has been easy.)

Still in Draft.
Rules:
If you switch to "LIST VIEW", you'll see under each movie:
1) what week it is
2) what the theme is
3) a description of the theme
4) a list to assist you in choosing a movie
5) a tag for your review for the week
SOME NOTES/RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT THE CHALLENGE:
The goal here is to get a good variety of cult movies over various decades, genres, and countries.
All of the lists put in the notes are recommended lists. With some weeks, like J-Horror week or Zombie week, there will probably be some on the list that don't work so well, and some not on the list that would work just fine. They're not definitive, but they're good stepping stones.
With every viewing, don't forget to tag your reviews/views with "cmc2017" and that week's/theme's exclusive tag, so we can all do an easy search for each other's reviews. Also, don't forget to tag your list with "cmc2017list" so we can see can all be judgmental of each other's choices.
Don't feel like your initial selections have to be what you watch. If you come across problems with accessibility, or you just plain want to go with a different movie, feel free to swap them out.
If you fall behind, don't worry. Sometimes interest can dip down, or sometimes things come up. We've got a whole year to do this, so you've got plenty of time to catch up.
Like a theme so much you want to double or, dare I say it, even triple dip? Go for it!

Giallo Week
Italian-made murder mysteries that bridge the gap between Hitchcock and slashers.
Tag: cmc2017week5
Week 6: Feb. 5-Feb. 11
Video Nasties Week
In the 80's, England's government so strongly believed that violent films were causing violence in reality, that they made a list of films to ban from the country. Stores that sold them were raided with the owners/cashiers arrested, and it probably did more for the bootleg market than prevent any physical crimes.

Week 7: Feb. 12-Feb. 18
50's Sci-fi Week
The title really says it all. Science fiction movies from the 1950's. The more afraid they are about Communism, the better!

CAT III Week
Category III is the Hong Kong equivilent of NC-17. Most of these films get the rating for violence, but you get some nudity in there too.
Tag: cmc2017week9
Week 10: Mar. 5-Mar. 11
Full Moon Pictures Week
The horror/sci-fi company Charles Band started gets it own week, although he probably thinks they deserve a whole year.

All are films I have given 5 stars this year.
I'd like to note, despite the number of relatively dark/dramatic films here, that 2016 was a particularly good year for cinematic comedy (special shout out to TONI ERDMANN).

]]>My Top 10 feature films (and one short film) of 2015.
Top 4 are in order, the rest are pretty mutable in their placement. All are films that hit me hard between the retinas and the feels.
Not sure that there are any real surprises here though. And to be perfectly honest I thought it was a lesser year compared to the wealth of riches we received in 2014, both internationally and locally. The real quality took quite a while to emerge this year, but when it did those films really shone.

]]>Good lord there were a few too many irredeemable turds this year, especially in the mainstream. As white male privilege loses its grip politically, that seems to be reflected by the bottom of the barrel cinematically.
