"You got involved with a woman who fell in love with you for your sanity and hoped it would rub off."
Another absolutely bonkers premise that somehow works because of the incredibly convincing performances Cronenberg always seems to somehow shape and craft, regardless of whatever preposterous things their characters say and do.

"Hit me, hurt me, do anything but for Pete's sake, speak to me."
We should all be so fortunate that MGM was unsuccessful in trying to destroy all the prints for this film when they decided to remake it with Bergman and Boyer, which by comparison, was a Disney version of Hamilton's play.
The performances by Diana Wynyard and Adolf Wohlbrรผck were incredible. She was as spooked as he was creepy. And the lengths at which the discomfort is extendedโฆ

-You yourself said I should go about in the world. That meansโฆ taking risks.
-I know, my dear. Real happiness is worth almost any risk. But be careful. There may be breakers ahead.
Good lord, this was lovely. That ending left me an emotional mess! Gene Tierney in an unforgettable performance.
-Bernard Herrmannโs score was so impactful, adding so much to the moody narrative.
-Also, this deserves a way better poster!
