Imagine Apollo 13 meets Gravity, with a bit of Michael Bay emotion thrown in. That’s what you get with South Korean space flick The Moon.
It’s a story about 3 Korean Astronauts who set off on their mission to land on the moon. And like Gravity and Apollo 13 their journey to the moon is interrupted when something goes wrong en route and the mission is thrown into jeopardy.
The film flips back and forth between the space segments, and Mission Control, as the engineers and controllers try to save the astronauts and save the mission.
The spacecraft scenes are as authentic as you’re going to get, and the external space shots are excellent, I couldn’t detect any dodgy cgi so it gave it that big Hollywood feel to it.
Top it off with some Michael Bay style ‘Armageddon’ emotional scenes and you have a little gem of a space movie. The film is in Korean with English Subtitles, but don’t let that put you off. South Korea are putting out some real quality films the last few years so I’m happy to add this to my collection.

I’ve never been a fan of ‘comedy’ Adam Sandler, so it was a pleasant experience seeing the other more dramatic side to him, and I gotta say, I liked it.
Sandler plays ‘Barry’, a socially awkward man, who at times will burst into spontaneous violence for no reason. He runs his own business, although I’m still unclear what that business actually is, other than selling some plungers. He’s introduced, by one of his many sisters to ‘Lena’ played by Emily Watson and they begin a flourishing relationship.
Just one problem. Barry had previously phoned a sex line and is now getting demands to send extra money to avoid being harrassed by the unscrupulous Phillip Seymour Hoffman and his heavies.
Sandler was very convincing as this awkward man, who I’m convinced also had various mental health issues. At times his behaviour had subtle echoes of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man.
Emily Watson was also very good as Lena.
I definitely jelled better with the Dramatic Sandler and was glad all that bumbling comedy was absent from this film.

Statham sets out on getting revenge in the bloodiest way possible.
The cast also includes Josh Hutcherson and Jeremy Irons who run various organisations and are directly involved with the online money scamming, and have connections to the US Presidency.
This film is full on action, sometimes with similarities to John Wick, with Statham kicking so much ass and shooting one bad guy after the next. There’s some really good action set pieces, including a great ass whipping at a petrol station.
Overall I had a lot of fun, it was never boring and it gave me all the ‘Revenge Ass Whipping’ I could ask for.
]]>Daniel Craig returns as murder mystery sleuth Benois Blanc in Rhian Johnson’s follow up to Knives Out.
When a super rich entrepreneur played by Edward Norton invites a group of friends to his tech equipped island to play a game of ‘solve my pretend murder’ he gets more than he bargained for and soon secrets unfold around him.
I loved Knives Out, it had a great cast mixed with some comedy and was a well crafted murder mystery. So for Glass Onion you add a new location and a new group of people and it sets itself up for another memorable mystery. The key to these films is Daniel Craig who plays Blanc perfectly. Eventually I can see people talking about him in this role the same as they talk about his 007 portrayal he’s that memorable. A great cast including Edward Norton, Dave Bautista and Kate Hudson make this a definite watch.
I look forward to Knives Out 3
]]>James Cameron returns to Pandora after 13 years. Jake Sully and Ne’tiri now have a family and are forced to move their family to the oceans of Pandora as the ‘sky people’ have returned, not only to gather a new substance to benefit humankind, but an old threat has their sights set on bringing Jake Sully to his knees.
The visuals of Avatar2 are spectacular, the familiarity is there along with new and improved motion capture and cgi. The story is good, but also follows a similar path to the first film so retreads familiar territory. Great music and some brilliant action scenes make this an entertaining 3 hours plus movie experience. Enhance that with great 3D and you have a great night out.
]]>Really enjoyed this ‘Sky Original’ movie based on a book by Andy McNab.
It’s basically ‘Die Hard in the channel tunnel’ with some really good action, big explosions, and witty dialogue from Andy Serkis.
The cast includes Ruby Rose, who plays the main villain, plus Tom Hopper, fresh off Black Sails and Tom Wilkinson. But for me Andy Serkis had the best dialogue, giving it some sarcasm and snarky remarks.
When Ruby Rose hijacks the Eurostar and takes hostages it’s upto the main hero, Tom, and his bride-to-be Sophie to save the day, and the hostages, along with a squad of SAS soldiers and bring down Ruby Rose’ Grace.
An effective little disaster movie set in Paris.
When the city experiences an earthquake the population are suddenly confronted by this deadly cloud moving through the streets, that eventually settles and blankets the entire Country.
They realise the substance of this cloud is dangerous, and deadly to humans, and so must ensure they remain on a level above the cloud.
*Theres a good amount of tension in the film with this one family racing against time to acquire and replace these battery packs in a medical bubble that’s keeping their daughter alive. There’s some nipping into the murky cloudy filled streets by the mother and father of the child to find these battery’s, of course they can only do this by holding their breath or finding some oxygen breathing equipment from somewhere.
]]>Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair star in this absolutely manic ‘let’s kill our children’ thriller.
After watching some static on TV’s parents around the world turn homicidal and start offing their children in different ways, some more gory than others.
The two lead stars carry the film well and of course it wouldn’t be a Nic Cage film without him going total bat shit crazy.
The movie did end a bit abruptly which was disappointing but overall the film was an entertaining watch.
Another great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chadwick Boseman was the perfect choice to play the Black Panther. It’s nice once in a while to be taken away from the usual mixture of Thor/Cap/Stark/GOTG outings to give us something different. Well done Marvel another classic to add to the ever expanding cinematic universe.
]]>I really do love the JJ Abrams created Star Trek universe with this new cast. Although not as good as the 2009 movie or Into Darkness this is still a rip roaring space adventure with some of the best starship destruction effects ever put onto film.
]]>When it comes to superhero movies no one does it better than Marvel. After 10 years of build up everything comes crashing down in this out of this world spectacular space/action fest. The cast of characters is off the scale bringing together all those fabulous characters we’ve come to love, and loathe, over the years. The scale of this movie is beyond anything we could have imagined and sometimes it still takes my breathe away just seeing how everything came together so flawlessly. I don’t know how Avengers 4 will live up to this masterpiece, but somehow I know that it will, and sur it on an even grander scale.
