The Bad and the Beautiful

1952

★★★★★ Liked Watched

The Bad and the Beautiful is a melodrama directed by Vincent Minnelli starring Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner. It’s a film inspired by real-life Hollywood producers like David O. Selznick, Orson Welles, and Val Lewton. It’s a compelling tale with strong acting and an interesting structure--it’s told in a series of flashbacks explaining the relationships of each of the main characters (writer, director, actress) with the producer (played by Douglas). It is not only entertaining but rings with authenticity clearly…

Sorry to Bother You is described by the writer/director Boots Riley as "an absurdist dark comedy with aspects of magical realism and science fiction inspired by the world of telemarketing." My Neighbor Totoro

1988

★★★★★ Liked Watched

My Neighbor Totoro is a delightful tale of two sisters who move to rural post-war Japan. Through their eyes, we meet the locals, explore their new house, and explore the surrounding environs. Aspects of sisterhood (and childhood) are captured so authentically and depicted with such charm (and often joy) as to melt the coldest of hearts. This is a film for anyone (ages 0 to 100+) to watch at any time. It is a perfect movie.

Miller's Crossing (1990) is a Coen Brothers film that I've been meaning to see for years (decades!) and thanks to some wise soul I got to watch it in May. I actually watched it over a week ago, but have been too busy to post about it. I loved it! I loved the style, the substance, the acting, the look, the sound--whoever recommended this has great taste! It was interesting to watch the short interview with Barry Sonnenfeld (who was…
