kinda janky as a standalone thing, but i like Kantor for the way he marries theatre and abstract colour. This is more just the latter, but the roughshod splashiness reminds me of being on a very wet slippery stage

This is Owens' least great featurette. Some sticky off-cuts from a different film we'll never see. The images feel like they stick onto you brain. Pictures layered on top of each other like a cake, but no sound, which is a pity.

All the recognition wasn't able to neuter this lovely film. I still feel very strongly about the two lead performances, both so stunning that I want to have them framed. I missed Mark in the second half again, but I guess I chose to enjoy the absence this time round. He's just so great and it's not only exciting acting, i actually can't think of a realer performance about how difficult it is to be rich. Not only is everything available to him but he also lets everything in and it completely destroys him. Mikey's stunningness is still blinding, still thrown by it.

This movie has aged in many interesting ways. Not sure where to place this sublime kitsch vibe anymore? I definitely like some of it. The ending, it must be said, is a flat out disaster. All the beach stuff, everything after they leave the house, does damage to the film. There’s something about the thickness of sentiment that feels almost radical at times. I’m thinking about moments like when Jessica Chastain spins through a field of grass with her kid on her hip, points at the twilit sky and says, “that’s where God lives.” I almost can’t think of a harder line to sell as an actor and I’m not sure she does, but she believes what she’s saying. Meanwhile, I, the viewer, don’t know what to do with myself. This movie is kind of like the twee-est possible version of a 2010s era Burial track. Like a twee Christian Come Down to Us. And it feels appropriate to compare this film to music, given the outsized influence it had on music videos and visual albums during the 2010s. If you consider how prevalent this fluid movement meets fragmentary editing schtick became after this, it’s hard to think of a more conspicuously influential film from that time. Luckily there’s less of that going around now

Markopoulos is difficult, the way he paces and repeats things produces a staggered effect. It feels like one step forward two steps back, little refrains of collage repeating, staggering. And difficulty can have a purifying effect as well. In retrospect this seems almost flawless. I wish I knew more about the 60s New York art scene to pick up on the sociological value of the actors, but I really enjoyed their posing skills. Posing is hard, sometimes harder than acting.

This has such a nice light swift consistency. A lot of ambient acting in this, like air swirling around Jackie Chan as he tries to do the right thing in a crazy world. I like what the bad english dub does as well. I like when you can feel a little discrepancy between image and sound, it adds another sheen of artifice and allows you to hold the fiction lightly. Nothing weighs heavily here, it never lands any one place for too long, because the film is above all about movement

This really worked for me. I liked the resistance it offered, how confusing and sad it keeps getting, the beautiful Jonathan Anderson costumes, the stupid sound stage sets, the blow job and above all Daniel Craig. I don't think I knew he could do something like that. The second half is boring, but in a very expressive way

Such a relief to watch this, something honest ffs. Although that really doesn't capture what this is doing, it's a lot stranger than I was expecting. Jarringly bright for one thing, the blinding blankness of Pansy and Curtley's house really got to me. The production design never feels cynical or deliberately tragic, but nothing's hidden. a lot about muteness in here that really hits hard, centering on Barrett and especially Webber's work. When Curtley throws the flowers Moses got Pansy for mothers day out the back door onto the lawn, Jesus Christ. And Jean-Baptiste's really is the kind of performance that actually stretches you as a viewer. I've enjoyed watching all the blockbuster performances during prestige season, I like watching star power do its thing, but none of those put you to work the way Jean-Baptiste does here. Again something pretty strange about it at first, the almost metronomic steadfastness of those tirades in the first third, and she's really awkward to watch all the way through. Just straight pain and difficulty from start to finish. Dan Sallitt took issue with the fact that her hostility is the only entertainment in the movie, which I've been thinking about, but there's an insight in here, about how you can get so stuck in a self-destructive compulsion to the point where it becomes almost cartoonish, like self-parody. I appreciate that Leigh and Jean-Baptiste really play Pansy's bitterness out all the way, because there isn't necessarily a limit to that kind of spiral of behaviour. Some people really can't help but be excessively awful, which has interesting narrative implications.

Bong Joon Ho is the ideal guy to be making his kind of for the whole family movie, but i've never really been able to get myself psyched up about his project. I wish I could, I don't like feeling cynical about something so uncynical. rpats gives a good genre performance, very unsophisticated, mostly just his usual wired schtick and a silly accent, but does what it needs to do

The only good cousin movie I can think of. It's too writerly and blandly made but engaging because of Culkin's prana. Eisenberg feeds off him, they have a fun dynamic, but the latter's performance on its own is kinda wobbly. Nice middle-brow comedy vibes though

I like the idea of enjoying this the way you might enjoy a musician reviving an early 2000s pop genre. The 2000s were full of biopics that were just an excuse for a superstar actor to do a big transformation. Timmy gave us what we wanted, he's lovely and the rest doesn't actually matter, or it does, but as . That much is clearer to me now, seeing the genre played out again in revived form, once removed.

My life has changed quite profoundly of late and suddenly I find myself returning to the ideal I modelled myself after as a teenager, Daniel Day-Lewis. Distancing myself from my teen obsession with him as an adult might've just been a way to distance myself from the delusional self-seriousness I related to in him. Now, I am struggling to deny that I am delusionally self-serious and that it might be the only way for me to be. This is one of his I never saw back then, but it's not very good, nor is he any good in it. It's all quite stiff, in a sort of likeable way, as is the rapport between DDL and Gordon Warnecke, but neither of them really understand the style, nor do I tbqh. He was 28 here, same age as me, which makes me feel better about my acting career.

At first I was like, I wouldn't call this a film but potentially one of the best ever art history lecture slideshows. But now I'm thinking maybe this film functions as a kind of bridging point between cinema and stainglass windows. The examples that best illustrate Hiler's incredible argument about stainglass as proto-cinema are the pieces which tell a story across adjacent s. Hiler goes so far as to call them the first mass media, animated from behind by the sun like a mercury vapour lamp, but it's a movie that doesn't move. If you think about the intervening time between 1300 and now as an exponential speeding up of the image until it actually appears to be moving, then this film takes us a bit back in the direction of static slideshow cinema

Love triumphs in the end I guess. Love "wasted" us; that's how the kids at my primary school used to describe a heavy defeat on the sports field. Those huge boys I played rugby against wasted me every weekend and triumphed, like love, in the end. Rugby is the wrong metaphor for this film and the real winner here is actually 1940s The Archers special effects. SFX peaked here. The earnestness of Richard Livesey's mystical doctor character sits kinda strangely on him with his blockish style, but I still like watching him, what a weirdo

This was the first Lynch film I saw when i was 15, my older brother showed it to me after seeing it at a midnight screening in Stellenbosch. It was a real expanding the horizon of possibility moment for me (like my first encounters with Mambéty, Brakhage, Duras, etc), because at the time it just seemed like an explosion of wayward strangeness, which was extremely thrilling then. This time it felt like the opposite of an explosion; quite compact actually and elegantly manoeuvred. On the one hand he sets up a very convincing little world, but it also doesn't really feel as though anything exists outside of the parameters of the film. It just moves from one perfectly enclosed little environment to the next and the way it moves makes formal sense. What seemed like senseless freedom of movement during that first viewing now looks a lot more systematic to me. And systems are good, you need to set one up in order for the strangeness within that system to become legible.

Madison and Eidelstein are very persuasive and that's all I can manage to care about right now. They're bright enough to blot out some of the stickier bits in the second half. Guy who played Igor also turned in a remarkably spineless performance. The last scene gets pretty horrible, but I don't mind that Baker pursued the weirdness of that relationship. Neither of Ani's relationships make sense, which I appreciate.

My favourite melodrama about my favourite melodramatic theme: impossible love. Lisa not only loves Stefan, she loves the impossibility of him. I’m so moved by this, because I have loved many impossible things in my life

I didn't think Charles Boyer had it in him. Irene Dunne makes sense here, her openness suits the movie exactly, but Boyer's casting was a gamble. Worked out though, I'm ruined

Watched in bits and pieces after nights out over the weekend. Terrible viewing experience, barely held any of it down, but seems good

I'd read about shanelec's brief career as a stage actress, but could never really picture her in performance and only this week did I learn that she stars in this and other earlier films of hers. I get it now though, she's fantastic. Loved seeing how she herself embodies the quiet brutality of her films, like her delivery of "What are you doing? Harakiri?" when she walks in on her son cutting himself over the kitchen sink. It's an insane little moment, one that only she could handle right.

You don't know the Lubitsch Touch until you've seen his silents, it's so crisp and visual and shapely here. The Incredible Shrinking Man moment at the end of this has to be like top five lubitsch touches

This feels like the logical endpoint of bushsploitation (serengeticore?) films, in that it tests the furthest limits of our fetish for African wildness, but also pretty quickly transcends genre and slips into a kind of freeform documentary about a family of actors trying to navigate a house full of adult wild cats. It reminded me of something Angela Shanelec said about how in theatre, if there is an animal on stage, the actors might as well go home because they will always be upstaged. The poor actors in Roar are completely dwarfed by the cats, not only physically, but also in the attention the animals command. Their brute presence, the inscrutable thingness of their inner worlds, the force and conviction of their movement is absolutely compelling. Tippi Hendren's involvement made me think about The Birds, which is also about the inert horror of animal life, but this film needs to at least try to be a comedy.

I mean I like watching stanley tucci as much as the next guy, he makes very tasteful choices, but ffs he has such boring taste in scripts... And I know he gets offered interesting projects, I'd love to see him try something, but it's only ever stuff like this. Anyway, decent film, some well-worded monologues

I'm too poor to afford that 'pro' and 'patron' shit so I thought I'd just put together a DIY year in review list. Its one of those 'layered lists', an idea I stole blatantly from other letterboxd , so all royalties to them.

The first 2 lines (1-10) represents the 10 best/favourite viewings I had in 2014 (EXCLUDING 2014 releases)

Line 3 is the 5 2014 releases I liked most. My 2014 releases list is still in progress as many many great films of 2014 are yet to be released in South Africa but these are the best ones Ive seen thus far.

Line 4 shows the 5 best performances I saw all year. Read notes to see whose performance I am referring to.

The 5th line represents the 5 best short films I saw all year

And finally, the last line represents the 5 movies I liked least out of all my viewings.

My first full year as a Letterboxd member was a great one. Aside from the very unfortunate recent racism debacle, my experience in 2014 has been all smiles. I really hope that the Letterboxd team will respond appropriately to this very regrettable incident. Hopefully in 2015 we can endeavour to keep Letterboxd safe and enjoyable for everyone.
