Entertaining enough. If you love Dylan’s music then you’ll have a very fun 2 and a half hours that’ll fly by. I certainly did. Timmy absolutely excels and there are some truly fantastic performances from Monica Barbaro, Elle Fanning and of course Boyd Holbrook, whose fun portrayal of Johnny Cash is sublimely entertaining and allows him to pretty much steal every scene he’s in. I have zero interest in Robbie Williams’ music or life story, and when I first read about this film I thought it was a spoof article, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued by the concept. Add to that the incredible reception it’s received and I found myself very excited going into it.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Structurally there’s little to differentiate Better Man from the gazillion other musical biopics that have been churned out seemingly every week…
I like to think that Alfie Allen single-handedly ended all future wars with his rendition of “War.” Speaking of war, since this film establishes that Blair exists but the US president is just some random guy instead of Bush, then did the Iraq War happen in this universe? I have so many questions.
