Ben Pereboom’s review published on Letterboxd:
Initial thoughts:
-White boy hits perfect sand griddy; wages interplanetary jihad
-The haze of religious fervor permeating the third act after Paul drank the slurp juice… Shit was just happening.
-This movie has attracted a number loud people who are either super annoying about movies, the source material, or just generally mad when a lot of people enjoy shit. The type of people who give it three stars on Letterboxd like it’s not an outstanding achievement. You’re giving this movie the same amount of stars as Forgetting Sarah Marshall or something? Like maybe my problem is with the rating system altogether, but people who use it like that are doing it for attention. Goodnight!
-The Sardaukar went out like some bitches😭😭 serves them right
-I am ing the nation of Islam
“Omg the glazing is crazy” Yeah, it’s called enjoying shit. Get some damn joy in your life. Be excited about something.
I’m gonna have to stew on this, but last thought: Watching this has made me more critical of Denis in some respects, particularly with movies I really enjoyed like Blade Runner 2049. His visual trademarks like the monotone (but striking in its own way) color palette and somewhat spare overall mise-en-scene (I’m sorry I used that word) can feel out of place. He’s said as much about having some regret about invading that universe before, and that reverence and self-awareness showed that he can continue to grow. I guess my thing is choosing the stories that best deploy that trademark visual style, which totally worked for his treatment of Dune here. BR2049 was certainly a worthy addition, but I feel like it set the franchise’s style for the future (and perhaps sci-fi more broadly). While I appreciate the direction he took it in, something was lost in departing so starkly from Scott’s original.
His overall spare (which isn’t even spare) visual style can create some friction in a rich world like Dune, but this is his adaptation, and that mf looks GOOD. Spare isn’t even the right word because he’s awe-inspiring with this shit.
