Blasting this thing in IMAX is the way to go- the speakers were literally creaking and cracking, in perfect harmony with all the rocky hills that get blown up into dust by the Harkonnen infantry.
Dune Part 2 is about as epic as films can get nowadays. Villeneuve has proven to be, along with Nolan and Cameron, the man for well-crafted spectacle cinema. Spectacle cinema with actual meaning.
I enjoyed this way more than part 1 because all the set-up expository worldbuilding is out of the way (mostly) and now we can focus on the actual emotion of this story. A story that is hard to follow because so many different parties are at play, each with their own individual goals. This film introduces new faces, with various objectives and ambitions.
You kinda just have to let go and focus on Paul and his quest, how he will fulfill his destiny and his role as a messiah. I was mostly arrested by him and Chanis (Zendaya- wonderfully sensitive) relationship, this to me is the emotional core of a very confusing world that doesn’t allow for emotion. A very stoic and apprehensive world that only speaks in superlatives.
Whatever your opinion is on Dune Part 2- we’re lucky that Villeneuve cares about this project. I still would love to see him go back to more grounded stories because I feel like his directing for big CG spectacle feels a bit wonky. There’s awe in this but also unintentional goofiness.
