After liking (but not loving) X, I am shocked to say I adored this. Forget tone - this is a completely different subgenre of horror, one that blends character-driven drama and slasher elements with the pacing and atmosphere of a psychological thriller. The writing here is much tighter (no doubt partially due to Goth's involvement as a co-writer), the direction, cinematography, and color of the film are pristine, and above all, Goth gives a career-defining performance that makes it difficult…

Based on the trailer and the first 20 minutes, I honestly wasn't sure how I would feel about Skinamarink. But after that first act, something shifted. I watched the film alone with the lights off, which helped me to immerse myself in the experience, and depite the fact that this is largely shots of household items and liminal spaces with grain overlay, a number of scenes genuinely scared me more than any horror film I've ever scene.

I'm not much of a Nolan fan -- I tend to find him a bit overbearing with his twists and his insistence to ground them in some kind of reality -- but this is about as close as I can get to turning a blind eye to the plot holes in favor of a movie that is simply super watchable and well-performed. It's batahit crazy and starts to fall apart when you think about it longer than a couple of…

Locked

The ending feels a little rushed, but you basically get to watch Skarsgaard and Hopkins do their own rendition of Saw inside of a locked care for 90 minutes. Feels very nu-Shyamalan (specifically Trap) adjacent. Fun stuff!

Being a Kevin Smith fan is kind of like being a Weezer fan. There's been a lot of ups and a lot of downs, but growing up with his work, it's almost just comforting to know he's still at it. I would say this missed about as often as it hit, but I also pretty much smiled throughout the entire thing. It's a shell of what's come before, but the heart is still there, and that was enough for me. I had a lot of fun.

Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark

2023

I don't think I've ever seen a set closer to classic Carlin. Maron's always been talented, but he really used this hour to take tragedy (both global and personal) and transform it into some of the darkest and funniest bits of his career. "Anti-Woke" comedians should be taking notes.
