i watched this right at the beginning of the pandemic with a friend over facetime. i had just recently decided to get back into anime after what was about a 3-4 year hiatus, and oh my god - this changed my life. it so quickly and intensely brought me back into the fold of this genre that i love so deeply and has defined my life in so many ways. i’m revisiting this for the last day of my anime seminar - i feel so lucky and fulfilled to have been able to engage with anime, officially, in real life, in ways i thought where only possible in intangible or casual settings (it’s not just in my head or online! this stuff really is just as important and real as i thought it was!). this movie is just as perfect as it was back then, and has made me feel the exact same things… i hope that all of us trying to grasp a dream and fleeting nostalgia can end up grabbing and holding it tight!!!

not nearly as subversive or subtle as it thinks it is lol. actually has nothing to say about kink or sexuality or power dynamics any way. ruben and i got bored at the hour twenty mark and watched the rest of it on 1.35x speed and that was hilarious so this gets an extra half a star

one of the best things to ever be created quite frankly. filled to the brim with complex poignant messages and themes and never once feels bloated. endlessly imaginable and heartfelt and Gorgeous… did my readings for class on this one and am truly blown away by everything here:

consumption, excess and greed: no face trying to win the affection of chihiro by stealing extra tags for her, being confused at her simple response of “i don’t need it,” offering faux gold and consuming those in service to him to the point of bursting, all to regurgitate up this consumption because of the medicine from the river god, swallowing bitter, natural medicine that tethers him to the world and necessary consumption

liminality and a common cultural identity: chihiro inhabiting a liminal role as both a human and an outsider, plus someone that must fight to her name and identity, and who even nearly physically disappears (before she too swallows bitter, natural medicine thanks to haku), a young girl who starts out on the brattier side, showing her age through her attachment to her parents yet her detachment from their self obsessed, materialistic leanings, and then transforms into a girl connected to a common (yet multiculturally inspired) identity through honest, necessary bathhouse work, becoming liminal no more as she connects haku to his own identity and returns home

memory and pollution: “she controls you by making you forget your name” (put roughly) is what haku tells chihiro to warn her about forgetting her own identity, and no one knows this more than haku himself. it later being revealed that haku is a river spirit who’s home was paved over and polluted, he is at the mercy of yubaba’s magic and bidding because his essence and connection to his natural identity has been polluted beyond recognition. the river god is saved from his stink spirit facade when chihiro notices the “thorn” in his side, a rusty bicycle handle attached to a disgusting stream of other junk. his home and essence has been polluted beyond recognition, causing the world to shrink away from him - he can only reclaim his being after he has been cleaned and reborn (and chihiro is reborn as well, cleaned by the very same water). the memory of plentiful, clean, kind natural resources is what allows them to retain their shape, function, and spirit. 

does chihiro forget all of this when she leaves? the movie wants to leave this ambiguous - she heeds haku’s advice and does not look back as she runs to catch up to her parents. as she glances back towards the tunnel, and turns to get in her parent’s car, the hair tie spun by zeniba glitters in the sunlight, our hope that chihiro has not, and will not, forget what she has learned and who she has become. let’s hope we don’t either!

really powerful final shot. this is a horror movie

utterly fabulous

was pretty disappointed by this one… really was too short for me to get invested in the story or characters and what they represented and also i really didn’t enjoy the way women’s bodies were used and how the end is about true humanity being about reproduction… as the ai? cyborg? all knowing technological entity? with a male voice asks the cyborg who has been naked almost the whole movie and has a female voice to fuse with him so he can make children…maybe there’s something i’m not getting but i did do all my readings for class about this and yet!

3 stars because it looks and sounds cool

skipped midterm studying and saw this at a screening at school and after renèe did a q&a which was cool

had to rewatch because i didn’t take the notes the first time and i have to write a paper on this #oops

but it’s genuinely crazy that people in the west (americans) saw this and had the gall to think it was wacky goofy or cheesy when it so clearly shows the devastation of the nuclear warfare their country unleashed in the most grave intense and impactful ways. both times this has gotten such a strong emotional reaction out of me and i can’t fathom thinking it’s even a bit silly

really great and very sad and incredibly haunting. looking forward to my first media seminar tmrw

the complete and utter dream. the epitome of what cowgirl daydreams means to me (me and s’s radio show. hi s)

i’m honestly kind of speechless so i might come back and write some more stuff later… but for now i just have to say that thelma and louise’s dynamic is one of the greatest ever put to screen - they are so real and vibrant and have these hopes and deep anxieties as they go down this path unabashedly and i’m just so wowed by all of it. as characters and as women the way they change as they are able to finally stop just having to Take it and start being able to live. together and freely and on the run and it sure ain’t perfect but what life do they have waiting for them elsewhere? what can you possibly go back to after seeing life on the run? 

it started with louise having enough and defending thelma, taking violent action to defend her best friend/lover(!) from suffering from the same thing she did, something she couldn’t escape then and sure can’t escape now. and then they just continue and keep going and making it work and staying together and living for themselves and each other and throwing it all to the wind. and then they keep going and they keep going and they keep going

oh and by the way. the hair in this movie is FABULOUS

something something clinging onto systems that you know to be real and true and refusing to accept the uncertainty and doubt that is building beneath the surface in every pore of your world until you can’t ignore it anymore. something something growing up on the boundary of what is “real” and what isn’t and why it even matters but knowing it does

harper is actually a genuinely awful person and not only did abby deserve none of that treatment but her staying with harper makes me incredibly concerned for her mental health and self worth

it’s not often that you feel that you have a long winding path towards a movie… but wicked has been in my life for so long. 

when my mom was 8 month pregnant with me, she went to see the show on broadway. she credits my love for the musical to that!

when i was in 2nd grade, it was the very first musical i had ever seen. i it so vividly to this day. i when elphaba proclaimed “and if im flying solo, at least im flying free.” and it was the first time in my life that i had ever listened to a lyric and felt it. she ascended, she belted, and then i exclaimed “that was AMAZING!” as i stood and clapped. my dad jokes about that moment to this day. for me, though, it changed my life, something i knew even then, at 7 years old. 

elphaba was the very first character i was ever inspired by, the first one i ever wanted to emulate. if you know me, that means a lot - im always talking about some character from some series that i adore and am deeply inspired by. 

but this was the origin. and what an honor to see it so lovingly adapted for the screen, what an honor for me to revisit it at 19, with completely new actresses at the helm, leading themselves through a brand new oz. what an honor! there was absolutely perfect chemistry from our main two (cynthia and ariana… i love you queens…) and such fresh takes on the characters. it is so clear that there was so much love and care put into making this what it is: not just a remake, but a memorable, authentic, true adaptation, with all of the artistic intent needed to make a new vision of a cherished story and musical. 

at those last few seconds at the end of defying gravity, when the theater was completely silent, and the camera panned to every single character looking to elphaba, either with fear or with awe, and i could hear my heartbeat pounding in my chest, i waited for that final belt to ring through. i looked, and i saw, and i heard, and the only thing i could think was, “that was AMAZING!”

this whole movie felt very lonely and isolating and sad and i wasn’t sure if it was quite hitting me but then i watched the very tail end on a walk with my dog and the weather has been the most beautiful it’s been in a long time and sunlight was filtering through the leaves that were swaying in the wind and the birds were all singing (yes it really was that picturesque) and it felt like it healed a little part of me.  if anyone is wondering you’re my friend till the end :)

i don’t think anyone has ever looked more beautiful ever than lucy liu in this movie

i think this is the coolest thing i’ve seen in my entire life

walking out of the theater into a packed mall right after this was such a disorienting experience 

i’ve never met anybody that is sucked into fiction the same way that i am. at the risk of sounding cringey, it becomes my life. i see the characters everywhere, mundane tasks become adventures, and i charter my path with the messages instilled within me because of it. 

naturally, when it comes to a sense of unbelonging, said fiction is my go-to comfort. how could it not be? how could i resist endless possibilities and magical worlds, resist the opportunities to view my world with indescribable new colors?

i wont pretend that i fully understand every part of this movie, despite its uber clear and unique vision, but i am not sure that i even want to. it begs for a rewatch (and hopefully after i can talk abt some of the technical things i enjoyed. the lighting. the choice of shots. the dialogue. THE MUSIC)

i think that whilst fiction can bring out the best in us, it can also be a mirror, a vehicle that allows us to discover what is already ours. following this thread of logic, what you see when the tv glows is yourself, and your desire to not only find the magic in your world, but the magic that lays within you. 

i am comforted and unsettled by this movie, its illustration of desire to find comfort and belonging in a current reality whilst balancing an unquenchable hunger for something more that is right within your grasp, exactly what you see when the tv glows. but, with the tv as your mirror, what glows is you

ps: 3/4 of the power fiction brings to the world is what we make of it. it is a symbiotic relationship and an eternal exchange

i’m actually a little surprised at the fact that i didn’t like… love this (but it is still 4 stars in my book Lol)? for reference the first time i ever watched star wars was when my dad made me watch all the movies at 5 years old, and despite my countless rewatches since then, its been awhile since ive revisited the entire thing. for this one, idk… i found the pacing to be weird and the shenanigans on endor to be pretty slow at times. but the trilogy wouldn’t be ed as the great and culture shaping phenomenon it was if not for the perfect emotional climaxes and resolutions of both luke’s arc and anakin’s arc, both of which this film boasts, so you know, i have a lot of love in my heart for it!

also sort of a side tangent but revisiting the og trilogy and this movie in particular (i think probably bc of the great care it takes in both developing its characters and rewarding the people who love them) made me really upset abt how the sequels turned out… it’s like they wanted to punish the longtime fans of a beloved franchise by taking away everything magical and cheesy and heartfelt and TRUE about it
