The fujoshis won this set. Not as much about the inherent homoeroticism of tennis as it is about the loving cruelty that comes from one woman’s desire to compete vicariously, to toy with the two white boys she gives something to lose. Guadagnino’s vision of tennis is one of accentuated gestures, an evolving and repeating set of visual cues binding two people, a personal history that cuts in with every hit, each exchange of the ball a flashback to another piece of the dynamic. The cuts are jarring and the camera movements sudden. A shift in the air is momentous. Sports cinema has never been more exhilarating and more fulfilling.
