Surprising to see a movie like this kind of come alive during the dramatic moments but completely die during the action scenes. The action is very boring, incompetently filmed and edited and completely uninteresting.

(Unintentional) laughs and a few good moments are much too far between to ever recommend this even as B movie fodder, which is why I turned it on to begin with.

More traditional in a lot of ways to the offbeat and strange first Puppet Master but I preferred this to the original. It has a more coherent narrative and more rootable characters, as well as higher quality filmmaking in general. This felt more like a traditional horror movie than the original, but in a good way.

This is another one of those movies I probably never would have watched without the Puppet Masters / Castle Freaks podcast. The title is pure exploitation, but the plotline mostly follows the tried and true formula of The Most Dangerous Game.

That being said, I thought Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity was pretty entertaining. The practical sci-fi elements were enough to make things a little different and the leading ladies kept my interest. This isn't an all-time great Charles Bandiverse movie but I did enjoy it. There's a charm to cheap '80s sci-fi.

I resisted watching this forever despite generally enjoying Full Moon/the Bandiverse because I assumed it would be insufferably terrible, but this was better and less stuffed with cringeworthy puppets than I expected.

The characters in this are like the Avengers of quack scientists descending onto this puppet-infested hotel. All of them are so weird it does make this a little interesting despite none of them being remotely likable.

But that being said there is a ton of filler puppet POV at the start and boring stretches where nothing is happening. 2.5 stars but it does have that weirdo quotient where I can understand the appeal.

Gave this Cynthia Rothrock movie a rewatch, and I did enjoy revisiting this as a late entry in the Rothrock canon. My previous review mentioned how it was funny the same people were getting beat up in every fight scene, and while I did find it funny again I did feel like this was pretty deficient when it came to the action scenes. The opening shootout is ok but the rest of the action is pretty brief.

However, where this movie succeeds surprisingly is the dramatic angle. This actually hit some genuine pathos for me with Rothrock feeling sad and broken after her lover's demise and wanting to help two people avenge the death of someone they loved. The drama works for me and there are some decent comedic moments as well, I also loved Cynthia's little dog that she picks up early on.

I don't know why I'm continuing to watch these Wrong Turn sequels, I must like being in pain. At least this actually felt like a cannibal horror movie? Instead of whatever the script for the third one was before it was retooled into a Wrong Turn sequel.

There were like two so over-the-top sequences that actually ended up being funny, but the rest was not good. Worst parts of this are the deeply unlikable characters, they literally leave one of their friends to die an agonizingly painful and slow death and debate what to do all while we continue to hear his tortured screaming? Wtf?

And it was certainly one of the choices of all time to introduce the 5 main characters into the movie with dueling terrible sex scenes.

This is essentially just a copy of the first movie but direct to video, and just like the first one after a certain point it essentially becomes the Whatcha Say SNL sketch.

It's a budget copy but this was still decent as disposable trash, perfect junk to turn on while I'm feeling sick. I was laughing so hard at some of the final plot reveals as the twists for the sake of twists just kept coming.

I'm willing to bet the script for this movie was one that some producer had sitting on a drawer somewhere that got reworked into becoming a Wrong Turn movie.

The prison bus plot is so generic and the characters are pretty much all boring stock archetypes. The main character is a milquetoast guard studying to become a lawyer because he likes money (supposedly; the performance doesn't come off that way at all) and there's not one, not two, but THREE different monologues about how money isn't worth it when they're fighting for their lives. Embarrassing.

Wrong Turn 3 also takes the issue of showing off the cannibals too much and cranks it up even further. Other than a gory opening scene and random jumpscares this doesn't even try for horror, cannibal hillbilly is just walking around in flatly lit scenes in the woods. This was a steep departure from the first two.

Jean-Claude Van Damme's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The comedy is really corny and this starts off REALLY rough, but I did find myself eventually enjoying this as pure dumb fun.

It really helps that all of the action is in-camera and with practical effects. The fights and car chases are nothing to write home about but they are competent. Sofia Milos is appealing as the female lead to match Van Damme and Brian Thompson is pretty fun as the hammy villain. Charlton Heston is in this for 5 seconds for some reason and I 100% thought he was going to come back to life as a big reveal towards the end but then it didn't happen.

I'll never look at Paprika powder the same way again.

Is life a tragedy, or a comedy? I can't say Melinda and Melinda actually handles this question in any interesting way. The whole conceit is that Woody Allen takes a similar story premise and treats it two ways, one as tragedy and one as comedy. The problem is that the tragedy is fairly meh since it doesn't have enough time to really flesh out the characters, and the comedy is largely unfunny and frankly too similar to the tragedy storyline.

It's the same problem I had with Allen's previous film with a zany 00s comedy poster (Anything Else) - Allen had zero pulse on contemporary comedy. He cast good actors for the contemporary moment (Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Amanda Peet) but his stodgy old perspective prevented the screenplay from succeeding in the comedy portion. If one half of the film was your tragedy-core Woody Allen and one half was an 00s zany comedy, I think this could have actually really worked. But Allen doesn't know how to adapt to the times and couldn't write or direct that kind of comedy.

Will Ferrell actually does a good job in the comic part, salvaging some of Allen's dialogue playing the Woody stand-in role. Seemingly through sheer force of will, Ferrell manages to make a couple of moments in this half actually fairly funny despite the stilted dialogue. And I did have a laugh out loud moment with one of the smash-cut edits when Ferrell realizes he's free to pursue the eponymous Melinda despite being married to Peet's character.

On the tragedy storyline I really liked Chloe Sevigny's performance, and Radha Mitchell does good in both as Melinda but shines more in the tragic storyline as she's given more to do. There just isn't enough meat to this storyline due to how the film is bifurcated.

Overall I'd say Melinda and Melinda is an unsuccessful experiment, it's not terrible but it's pretty peak out-of-touch Woody Allen. There are a million ways this concept could have been executed better. Also the first time I've recalled seeing a black person in a Woody Allen movie, go figure.

The action scenes are solid (if mindless), and while the scale has diminished from the first Universal Soldier movie, it's clear there is at least something going on behind this in of budget.

But overrall Van Damme does seem a little bored and there's a lot of missed opportunities with the story. Based on the opener I thought the Maggie character was going to be a Michelle Yeoh style action sidekick for Van Damme, but she is massively underutilized. And Van Damme's daughter was another good angle for depth that doesn't get enough play. Instead we get an entirely unconvincing romantic interest from Heidi Schanz which completely fails to sell.

This was the definition of turn off your brain action, fun enough while it lasted but it legitimately made me appreciate the first Universal Soldier more. Maybe the most gratuitous strip club scene in movie history?

For a John Carpenter movie I have to assume the obscurity of Someone's Watching Me is due to it being a made for TV movie, but I have no such automatic bias against TV movies as many so-called cinephiles do.

Someone's Watching Me is a very good Hitchcock-ian thriller revised for the 70s. Some would say de Palma-esque but I think that's giving him too much credit. The angle Carpenter is coming from is different, and this has more in common with a similar thriller released the same year (also co-written by Carpenter) called The Eyes of Laura Mars.

And speaking of the writing, I actually think this is one of Carpenter's best solo written scripts. The scale is small but the film is tight and gets you right into Lauren Hutton's corner as the lead suffering from a deranged stalker. I was surprised there wasn't a female co-writer because the script is pretty transparent in its deep suspicion and distaste for men, who are all written as either creeps themselves or useless.

Overall, a very enjoyable movie. Lauren Hutton is good as the lead and Carpenter elevates the cozy 70s TV movie aesthetics with some nice cinematography, kind of providing a best of both worlds between cinematic and comfortable stylings.

It's been awhile since I've watched '70s exploitation nonsense but I forgot how enjoyable these things can sometimes be. There are some unsavory moments to be sure, but mostly I found this to be an entertaining and anarchic 'anything goes' action exploitation movie. I never got tired of laughing at the one female gang member wearing an eyepatch for the whole length of the movie. The whole movie is in horrifically bad taste, but in like the best way possible.

I miss movies that genuinely and unironically seemed to be written, produced, and acted by complete lunatics (Lawrence Tierney says hi) and yet still had some kind of budget behind them.

I watched this because Cynthia Rothrock was in it, though I knew she was in a ing role. Her role is pretty tiny in this, but the movie was still entertaining largely thanks to Lisa Comshaw in the lead role. This movie is another of those mid-90s movies about deranged or psychopathic artists that have never failed to amuse me. This one features a woman who lives in a warehouse and has sex with men before killing them in low-budget giallo scenes using their blood and bodies for her artwork. Oh, and she has a r*tarded brother(?) that lives with her who plays Beethoven on the piano and helps her clean up.

Almost nothing about this makes sense. Everything is crazy from start to finish and every other line of dialogue is completely bananas. This is probably the weirdest movie I've ever seen for Cynthia Rothrock and at the end of the day she's barely in it? Bizarre.

Gorier, nastier, and sleazier than the original movie, I actually enjoyed Species II a little more than the first one. The first movie fell apart in the second half, but this one keeps a more consistent quality. Species II definitely relies on the shorthand of characters already having been introduced in the first movie but it's a tighter experience overall with equal or better effects than the original. That early threesome scene in particular is affectingly nasty.

Michael Madsen looks like he'd rather be anywhere else but Marg Helgenberger is good and Natasha Henstridge is very improved but returns in a much more minor part compared to the first movie.

I'm pretty confused by all the praise for this film, in my opinion this is one that time forgot for a reason.

A few years ago I heard on a podcast someone complain about what they deemed "cop plots" in movies, subplots that involve police characters that add nothing to a movie but that screenwriters think are necessary for some reason. As in, you could delete the cop plot and cop plot characters and nothing or almost nothing about the movie would change. Well, One False Move is like a movie where more than half of it is a cop plot. Get rid of the L.A. cops and even most of Bill Paxton's character and nothing about this movie would change.

The far more compelling version of this movie would follow the main 3 crooks through their journey until Cynda Williams splits off and then follow her. Then maybe we would actually get some character development instead of the void of nothing in the film. We would not be cutting back to Bumfuck, Arkansas where literally nothing is happening. But One False Move keeps sending us to Arkansas with Bill Paxton, but frustratingly keeps its cards way too close to its chest for way too long about Paxton's character. These scenes would be completely unwatchable without Bill Paxton in that role.

I'll forget about this movie in a week.

Cynthia Rothrock headbutts a guy in the nuts then flips him over her back into a coffee table that explodes... this is why I watch B action like this!

I liked Rage and Honor II more than the first one, though this is a 90s sequel so you don't really need to have seen the original. From what I my issue with the first movie was the lethargic/dead direction, thankfully Rage and Honor II has some more energy.

The storyline is still very mediocre and the fights are pretty hit or miss in execution but Richard Norton and Cynthia Rothrock still shine, and have great chemistry together. If anything the movie underutilizes their buddy dynamic. The ending sets up a sequel hook for a third film that was never made, sadly. Kris and Preston needed a better movie to match up to their talents.

For a late stage Full Moon production Trophy Heads was shockingly competent and actually pretty funny, I'm a little surprised this isn't a better known movie given the cast. Trophy Heads is essentially a hangout horror-comedy romp showcasing some 80s and 90s scream queens and video darlings from the B movies.

While everything is pretty fun, the sequences when it shifts to Denice Duff and Jacqueline Lovell stand out the most. Those two were also in by far the least amount of movies back in the day and showcases just how unfair the business can be because both of them are talented and deserved bigger careers, especially Lovell because Duff at least has the Subspecies series as a legacy. Ultimately if you're familiar with the actresses this one's worth a watch for sure.

Say what you will about his accent, his acting abilities, or his films in general, but I personally have always enjoyed Schwarzenegger as an actor not for any classical skill but for the unique charm that he brings to nearly all of his films. There are better films and much better dramatic actors, but Schwarzenegger movies rarely disappoint me from an entertainment standpoint.

1. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage

   Reason to watch:

   One of the most foundational and influential giallos, the first from Dario Argento. Features a comprehensible storyline, decent characters, great music. Just watch this one.

2. A Lizard in a Woman's Skin

   Reason to watch:

   Surreal and highly psychosexual, a twisting and engaging mystery set in England.

3. All the Colors of the Dark

   Reason to watch:

   Highly surreal, satanic storyline with great direction and solid performances.

4. The Perfume of the Lady in Black

   Reason to watch:

   Fairytale esque psychological horror with surreal elements. Completely wild story with a good performance from Mimsey Farmer.

5. Blood and Black Lace

   Reason to watch:

   The first true example of a giallo, has all the elements that would be popular in the genre. Gorgeous cinematography. Slightly more restrained on explicit violence thanks to its '64 release date.

6. The Case of the Bloody Iris

   Reason to watch:

   Fairly light and comedic but still mysterious, thrilling, and twisting. Has the classic genre conventions, amusing characters, and a solid performance from Edwige Fenech.

7. The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion

   Reason to watch:

   To see a less violent mystery psychodrama giallo about blackmailing instead of murder

8. Five Dolls for an August Moon

   Reason to watch:

   Bava's cinematography illuminates this murder-mystery gem.

9. Deep Red

   Reason to watch:

   Argento giallo that occupies a space somewhere in between the more conventional Bird with the Crystal Plumage and the surreal nightmare of Suspiria.

10. The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh

    Reason to watch:

    Edwige Feneche headlines, a movie that really embraces the twisting, mindbending mystery elements.
