An intriguing premise and solid first act are both immediately trashed by bafflingly stupid decisions from our entire cast constantly, confused plot, and lack of… substance? Yet the funniest part is how invested the story had me in seeing where every stupid decision would take the plot so props to that I guess. Wouldn’t necessarily recommend unless you’re looking for a messed up movie that completely misses its mark by the end.

More than a handful of cheesy scenes and a couple moments that have aged like milk; Chronicle is nonetheless one of my favorite superhero movies to this day for daring to be so unique in its approach to its story and cinematography.

For a short that lasts barely over one minute, we get some of the most incredible practical effects work and set pieces i’ve seen in recent cinema. You can feel the amount of love put into every aspect of this thing and it really shines through for the finished project.

Truly the best since the original, Godzilla Minus One is a beautiful story set in post-war Japan that shows why Goji is at his best when care is put into telling not just a good monster story, but a good human story as well. Everything about this movie just works despite my handful of nitpicks and it honestly feels as though the team at Toho that brought this to life went through and picked out the best aspects of previous Godzilla stories. We really are living in a monster renaissance and Godzilla Minus One is, so far, the absolute highlight of it.
