Tonally insane, and doesn’t so much have a plot as a series of random incidents, but that doesn’t matter so much when you have people of all genders flirting with cross-dressing scammer Katharine Hepburn
]]>Not sure why the movie expects me to care about the titular Sisters brothers when Riz Ahmed and Jake Gyllenhaal are falling in love and trying to create a socialist utopia
]]>Tony Leung crying into the tape recorder, just rip my heart out and stomp on it why don’t you
]]>We’re all just the sum of the lies we tell ourselves
]]>Lily Gladstone and Shea Wigham just killing it
]]>Somehow contains more exposition dumps than Inception, Interstellar and the Lord of the Rings trilogy combined. The submarine set piece slaps though, and not just because it’s immediately preceded by my girl Katy O’Brian literally flexing on everyone.
]]>Not particularly well-written or directed, but I am compelled to hit the little heart for swole woman reasons
]]>The running bit of background actresses sporting plastic surgery bandages is just so funny
]]>Josh really takes a full journey from manic pixie toy enthusiast to 80s movie dad who doesn’t have time for his kid in 90 minutes.
]]>I really think this was the nail in the coffin of actors playing mentally disabled characters as Oscar bait. And for that, I salute Ben Stiller, Etan Cohen, and (checks notes) Justin Theroux?
]]>Klaus Badelt did NOT have to go that hard on the score
]]>Works better as a thriller about the failures of working for justice within the system than it does when it shifts to survival horror. Graham Greene absolutely rules as the embodiment of Native struggle against colonialism. Michael Hogan is having a great time as a smarmy asshole. Ron Lea is also there.
]]>As a film person, I could have done without the voiceover. As a person who has spent decades listening to the voices in my head tell me I’m not good enough, and who has only in the last few years reached a point where I’m willing to gain weight in order to gain strength, I am in awe of Angie, Emily and Kai for fighting through disordered eating and coming out the other side.
]]>A deeply silly movie with some wildly unearned plot developments, but if you have a couple good dance sequences in your movie I’ll have fun
]]>It’s crazy that Lynch made this movie about the rot and horrors that exist alongside the Americana he loves so much; a certain faction of critics freaked out about how violent, sexually explicit and dark it was; and then five years later Lynch makes ANOTHER exploration of the same themes that is somehow even darker, and he airs it on NETWORK TELEVISION. What a king.
]]>Good thing David did turn out to be a superhero, because maxing your bench with no spotter (!) and no safety catches (!!) is an awesome way to die. My man, you could have done the same thing with deadlifts, and the worst that would happen is the bar wouldn’t come off the ground!
]]>Lovely little film about queer found family. Totally a bit inconsistent, but maybe that’s just because I am a certified hater of children and had a difficult time relating to Lee and Angela’s driving desire to have a baby. Han Gi-Chan is a delight. Cool of Andrew Ahn to cast Joan Chen as my mother.
Chris, baby, don’t finish that dissertation. Nothing good has ever come of getting a PhD.
]]>Andrew Scott really is one of our finest actors
]]>Too stylized for its own good. There’s nothing wrong with the occasional two-shot or shot-reverse shot!
]]>The only movie ever made about the music industry where the label representative isn’t evil. Tom Hanks’ performance here is the good twin to the evil twin of his Colonel Parker. Very funny that Ethan Embry is credited as “the bass player”.
]]>On the big screen for the 20th anniversary 😍❤️
]]>Ten pounds of movie in a five-pound bag, with all the messiness that implies. Some absolutely bravura filmmaking and some real head-scratching moments, but it’s never less than fascinating. Way more discussion of cunnilingus than I was expecting.
Can we all agree, however, that making the actual final scene of your movie a mid-credits scene should not be done? Half my theater watched it standing in the aisles, and plenty of people had already left.
]]>Dennis Nedry’s death terrified me as a child and it terrifies me now
]]>It strikes me that Wallace’s life would be significantly easier if he didn’t have such a fondness for gadgets.
]]>the number of people who are calling this US military propaganda has me deeply worried about the state of media literacy. it's not even that many people, and still it is baffling.
]]>Every ing performance is somehow perfect
]]>This review may contain spoilers.
The end features a few too many plot developments, Josh maybe didn’t need to make a full villainous incel speech at the end to underline The Theme, and the framing of Eli’s love for Patrick is definitely a choice. That being said, I had fun, Quaid and Thatcher are great, and I’m always delighted to see Rupert Friend.
]]>Very The Terror-coded, both in its setting and in its exploration of the way hardship and fear can turn people against one another, so obviously I had a good time.
]]>Catherine Kuehn is absolute life goals, and I am a puddle on the floor.
]]>I hope Keke Palmer and SZA make five more movies together
]]>This review may contain spoilers.
The ultimate DINK fantasy: having an incredible wardrobe and gorgeous house, going out for weeknight movie dates, hosting dinner parties where you stir shit up to the point where someone gets stabbed, being willing to kill for one another 😍
]]>Obviously the movie is incredible and I’m glad we have it in this form, but I for one would have enjoyed the shit out of a weekly series where every episode features Mark Pellegrino fucking up a hit.
]]>Watched this because I don’t live in NYC and can’t see Andrew Scott’s one-man Uncle Vanya. But boy I wish I could because the man can ACT, even in a Lacoste polo and very baggy low-rise jeans.
]]>Looney Toons-ass movie (complimentary)
]]>I like to imagine that Gheorghe gets really into baking with his homemade cheese and eventually ends up on Bake Off
]]>This seems like an inefficient way to steal DVD players.
]]>Deserves a makeup nomination for Ruffalo’s veneers alone
]]>A smart, spiky adaptation of one of Austen’s less-loved novels. Completely changes the character of Fanny Brice, but since book Fanny is a stick-in-the-mud bummer, that’s probably for the best.
Really thought Mary and Fanny were going to fuck for a minute there.
]]>Gotta light?
Just wildly unsettling, upsetting, existentially terrifying stuff, and then Naomi Watts, Jim Belushi and Robert Knepper show up and do some of the funniest shit you’ve ever seen.
]]>Cillian Murphy made it through 400-odd days of the apocalypse while wearing shoes, and he both survived and wasn’t plagued by insane foot injuries, just sayin’
]]>Falls off a cliff, interest-wise, when it stops being about Cohn and Trump’s relationship and turns into a highlight reel of Trump’s 80s successes and failures, complete with heavy-handed foreshadowing of his presidency. Performances are pretty uniformly great, especially Jeremy Strong; there’s just not much to say about the subject matter that hasn’t already been said to death.
]]>Peaks in the Adam Scott-starring prologue. Let’s do better by Tatiana Maslany.
]]>Basically “what if Inglourious Basterds wasn’t very good?” Still had fun watching Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson mow down some Nazis.
]]>Babe Williams is beautiful, smart, funny AND dedicated to worker’s rights? Irresistible!
]]>Ah the good old days, when we cheered Nazis getting their faces melted
]]>Truly so stressful to watch. The cat’s little meow sounded so much like my cat’s little meow and I was so worried for him.
]]>s The Unknown Country in the “what if Nomadland but good?” club
]]>Peaks in the Dublin section, which rips. Bill Paxton is a wonderful dad who just takes people being murdered in his house in stride. I know we were all making clothing choices in 2011, but that does not excuse the white knitted hat Mallory wears for like 20 straight minutes.
]]>Somehow not the most emotionally devastating movie I’ve watched this month.
]]>was depressed for two straight days after watching (complimentary)
