Okay so I'm going to try and explain what this movie means to me, and my life as a Bollywood... researcher? I don't know, fan just does not cut it anymore. 1r1h

Firstly, and I say this with no trace of irony — had this been anything but an obscure flop Hindi film, it would have been hailed as a feminist masterpiece, a deep exploration of female psychosis/hysteria, and an absurdist social critique. Hell, if this was French, it would probably have made it on a few curriculums.

The film primarily deals with the splintering of a marriage and how female grief (maternal grief is too specific, but it is caused due to the accidental death of a child) can only fit into certain brackets and when it doesn't, society (including the husband) take it upon themselves to brand the woman as selfish, transgressive, and unnatural. It takes a family friend who's a psychiatrist to even attempt to understand the layers of grief and trauma Tina (she's actually not that bad here at all! I might be biased, but it is what it is) is going through. The execution isn't perfect, but it's so interesting to see this in a decade where women on screen (including Tina's other, more popular characters) were being chastised left, right and centre for not being perfect wives and mothers; the fact that Tina's Megha is allowed to be so, and also helped in her healing journey by medical professionals, was quite intriguing.

Secondly, and I cannot believe I'm saying this, but we just might have stumbled onto Ilaiyaraaja's most underrated '80s album. The BGM was classic Raaja, so much so that it almost became whiplash-y when the violins and saxophone started doing their thing.

Thirdly, Ashok Kumar Agarwal. Who is he? How has he made a film each with two of my favourite girls (he's the brains behind Shobana's Abhinandana, one of her better '80s outings too)? In other words, how is he literally my BFF?? But yeah, I am fascinated by him and his work, both as a cinematographer and director, and I would love to know more.

I'm so glad I partially live to unearth Bollywood hidden gems. For every five brain-deadening '80s crap fests I have to sit through, there's always a Kaam Agni (or whatever the correct spelling is) that makes me look at things differently. If only it happened in good quality prints (the only one we could find had the songs muted), but well. We can't have everything (but if you do know of a good print of this film, let me know!!).

Things I Iearnt from my THEATER experience of this movie:

1) Rani Mukerji's sexiness knows no bounds, confirmed and cONFIRMED. I thought 'Gore Gore' was the highlight of my life till she came wearing the title track saree (more on that below)

2) Coffee's for modern women!

3) KAMAAL DA BANDA HAI SHAMMI KAPOOR

4) Sometimes, all you need is an '00s YRF rom com to keep the blues away. The moment 'Mere Dil Vich Hai Hum Tum' started playing, I felt more relaxed and content than I have in weeks!!

5) Watching the title track on the big screen was a huge "that's cinema, baby!" moment for me

6) "Thank you Karan." "Kis lie?" "Jo tum kehne ki koshish kar rahe the, uske lie" AKA ITS OKAY TO BE INCOHERENT THE PERSON WHO GETS YOU WILL GET YOU!!!!!!!!!

7) Kunal Kohli is a Fiffty Fiffty (1981) truther. I SEE YOU KUKO, I SEE YOU!!!!!!!!!!

8) Finally, turquoise is a perfectly acceptable colour to wear on your own wedding?! Thank you Rani for showing us the way. Also, I see where her yellow sunglasses obsession comes from.

Estranged lovers who still love each other with the innocence of first love is a trope I shall always lap up. While the rest of the movie didn't live up to the expectations it set in the Jimmy-Nithya second first meeting, it was a good watch for the most part. The preaching bordered on being too overbearing, and that's a pain point in low-stakes romances like this one. Basically, I wish they'd just kept being low-stakes and giggly and cute. And given Maryam something better to do, my god what an annoying child.

Literally anything was happening in this way, and while the first half took some getting used to, the second one was quite fun and the vibes hit eight times out of ten (the other two, something unnecessarily violent was going on).

While I loved Prakash Raj's turn as the patriarch-who-undergoes-a-change-of-heart-when-alludugaru-makes-his-way-into-the-ancestral-house and also as the annayya-who-accepts-estranged-sibling-when-alludugaru-makes-him-realise-the-value-of-familial-love, I was fascinated by how effortless Mukesh Rishi was as the 'cool father'. I've mostly only seen him in ultra-villain roles (Okkadu notwithstanding), so this was quite a pleasant surprise!

I'm not necessarily a fan of the ending. After the way the twist was executed, I was expecting something better from the ending too. But it was predictable from a movie of its kind, so maybe the fault is in me?

But honestly, it's the performances that kept me hooked. Everyone delivered, and by the end, I felt as full as one can after a proper Telugu full meal. That's all a girl needs on her day off, isn't it?

This movie made me feel like my head was on fire. Among many others, here are two specific reasons: the lesbian song between Sridevi and her bestie in the movie, and the whole "I WILL KILL HER IF SHE CAN'T BE MINE" vibe. Not my first time at that particular rodeo, but like it was so intense here you could feel the tension, the bone melting anxiety and the incomprehensible feelings left behind by the ending.

And yes, Sridevi is 13 here. THIRTEEN!!!! Even more reason for my brain to be on fire.

PYAAR KA VAADA FIFFTY FIFFTY KYA HAI IRAADA FIFFTY FIFFTY!

This was pure fun. Just so full of vibes and delights and a lot of sparkle, courtesy my girl failure idol Tina Munim, who has an extraordinary scene where she revs up a bike and straight up JUMPS over thugs and goes on to threaten them more effectively than anyone in the Dhoom universe ever did. That's a real princess right there!!

I would have honestly given it 5 stars, it took me out of my own miserable head for 2 hours. But, unfortunately, the Rajesh Khanna plot line exists to serve no purpose except as a failed attempt at reviving his stardom. Jesus, I'm pretty sure they just extended his plot because Tina was getting too much of it.

But why shouldn't she? This is by far my favourite Tina performance. And my favourite Tina story. Asha is perfect as Tina's singing voice, it all just comes together so well I can't get over it.

Also, I'm just obsessed with the poster. What is Tina doing?? I want this on my wall. I want to see this every morning when I wake up. You know why? Coz PYAAR KA VAADA FIFFTY FIFFTY KYA HAI IRAADA FIFFTY FIFFTY!!!!!!!!!!

I honestly did not expect to like this movie at all, let alone give it a 4-star rating. I was tempted to give it 5 stars actually, on of it being the only movie where my name I have ever seen where the meaning of my name is utilised for its romantic potential — I can't believe I'm typing this sentence, a part of me really really hates that I am, but when Salman said "Kya bataun yaar, suraj ki pehli kiran thi woh" changed my fucking life. Plus, the album is really gorgeous. And the film is just the kind of predictable, soothing, melodramatic nonsense that I need when life sucks and suffering doesn't seem to end.

But most importantly, Madhuri Dixit mass!!! She was perfect as nerdy, feisty Pooja, and I wish the film ended with her rejecting both the insufferable losers. This is why I can't give it 5 stars, the male leads made me want to jump in the screen and rescue Pooja myself. This could have been a Madhuri-as-misandrist classic, but alas. *dramatically collapses on bed*

Another movie that I had been waiting to watch for the last 5 years — I finally got my hands on a print this weekend! It's crazy how both my big obsessions of 2020, iconic Telugu movies and Tabu movies, found a renewed surge of interest in the last 2 days lol.

This film was unexpectedly more fun than I was expecting, especially compared to some of the duds I have seen over the years from the Tabu Cinematic Universe. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, obviously, but it honestly falls in the Idi Sangathi (2008) category for me: terrible Tabu movies I am inordinately fond of. What can I say, tall women being crazy is a comfort genre for me!

Also, 'Dupatta Sambhal Ke' is probably one of the goofiest songs my angel has ever done, and that very much includes 'Mehboob Mere' from Biwi No 1 (1999).

Risked my eyesight with that god-awful print for my athiloka sundari, Sridevi, the only woman who has ever actually ed off as an angel on screen.

People who have been following me for a while will know how desperately I have longed to watch this with subtitles, and now, it finally happened!! That too on the biggest screen imaginable, so I could really drink in the pleasures of watching Sridevi, Chiranjeevi and Amrish Puri be the legends that they were at that time. So, despite the terrible print (I will not stop talking about it, yes), I managed to have a really good time, just because of how precious it was — my journey from obsessively watching the 'Abbanee Teeyani Debba' music video in 2020 to now, when I knew all the words and actually sang along, giving it the iconic classic treatment that it deserves (it's absolutely wild to me that the blue outfits were GREEN thanks to that idiotic print).

Now, onto the actual movie: what a fun, wholesome little romp this was! I was not prepared for the beginning, that was obviously a homage to Guide (1965), one of my favourite Hindi movies of all time. I mean, we have a guide named Raju who takes tourists to caves, and is so popular that tourists come flocking to him specifically. However, I was prepared for the Mr India (1987) comparisons, and honestly, those didn't take away anything from my enjoyment of JVAS. It's a solid movie on its own, mostly because it subverts Mr India in two important aspects: the Sridevi character in Mr India is a journalist, completely rooted to the world she lives in, while she is an actual apsara in this one, someone who finds herself in a brand new reality and must navigate through it. Secondly, the stakes are not as high here as in Mr India, where national security is at risk; here, we have a very localised crisis, which works to the film's credit.

I really enjoyed watching Chiru in his element and this might be the handsomest he has ever been to me (someone please give me Gang Leader with subtitles next). As for Sridevi, anything I say will be too less. This was my first time watching her on the big screen, and this was an excellent movie to begin understanding the phenomenon that she was, so don't miss this out if you are curious about that, despite the terrible print. I mean, I have always known she was a force of nature, but it's just different when you watch her on the big screen, her actual pan-Indian empire.

What else? Oh yes, 'Andalalo' might be one of the best songs ever made, and even more special when you see that in its proper context.

So the bottom line maybe is that... Chiranjeevi should stop making new films and we can all focus on re-releasing his classics. Please! And obviously, there should be a Sridevi re-release every few months or so, starting with Mr India. Pretty please!

Even though I mostly enjoyed it — Shobana, mass moments that land more often than not, Shobana, a great villain to match off Mohanlal's energy, Shobana, Mohanlal with some energy, Shobana, a script that works 80%, Shobana, good ing cast, Shobana, the Madampalli reference, and did I mention, Shobana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay where was I? Yes, even though I mostly enjoyed the long-awaited Thudarum (I was waiting for this since 2020), I will be focusing a little more on my complaints from it. Had to give the "liking it but I'm going to get negative here because I really really wanted to love it" disclaimer (in reality, I was expecting it to be awful so I should technically be grateful that I ended up having a good time).

First, and definitely foremost, is the fact that Shobana was "criminally underutilised", as one of my friends pointed out. There was nothing for her to do, except be hot (I'm really sorry but I am GIDDY), be the sassy wife/mother, and then cry over the wretched fate of her family. Shobana deserved as good a role as Mohanlal's — in this day and age, I don't see why these thrillers need to necessarily have "man acts alone" as their default setting, especially when the wife is hinted at having a deeper personality than what the audience gets to see. Also, Shobana and Mohanlal are one of the most iconic on-screen pairings of Malayalam cinema, so even from that perspective, I think the audience deserved better than to have a script skewed heavily in favour of Mohanlal. Why couldn't Lalitha have been Benz's partner at figuring things out? Why was she just crying and being threatened by cops, when she could easily have been the one taking them down?

The second problem is the second half. The first half kept me hooked nicely, and even though I had a suspicion that things would play out the way they eventually did, I still had some hope that I would be surprised. Nope. The route that the film took in reaching its destination didn't particularly wow me either. I found it quite stale and lazy, and more than anything, a little let down by the end. I do hope society moves on from having women's trauma be vehicles for the male saviour's glory arc soon, because this shit keeps getting worse with every Drishyam sequel (canon, subversive, or otherwise).

My third complaint is... okay it's not technically a complaint but.... Vijay Sethupathi? Seriously? The genius who thought of pairing Shobana and VJS up (I am not kidding, dear reader) needs to me asap, because I have some questions. I have a lot of questions and they must be answered!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, let me end this with a prayer: I hope Shobana keeps making movies, at least one a year, to make me feel things I never thought I would feel. And may all my favourite movies of hers (and also the ones I am dying to watch) get great quality re-releases too!

This review may contain spoilers.

There's a lot going on here: from a child's traumatising accident leading to a permanent facial disfigurement that leads to her being publicly humiliated (??) (you'd think small-knit communities would be kinder, but then you've never seen an Indian village and the layers of cruelty it contains within itself), to Rajeev (Shashi Kapoor) refusing to see what's RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. If he was that obsessed with Roopa's voice, you would think he'd know it in a heartbeat, but then again, you'd also have never known that men build the perfect woman in their heads and refuse to budge even when, I repeat, the truth is RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.

Then there's the explorations of femininity, sensuality, love as romance, love as worship, and love as something SHASHI KAPOOR'S CHARACTER DID NOT DESERVE IN THE LEAST oh my god I will forever hate this ending all I wanted was for Roopa to get a way out of the village and be her own person because none of the men in her life, a life she had devoted to these ungrateful men, ever stood up for her and just pulled her down mercilessly every step of the way. And I genuinely thought I was so close to getting that (and I know, I can't judge the movie through my understanding of what it should have been but you know what, I actually can) but no. For some reason, Rajeev decides to have a change of heart that was too abrupt to make sense, especially with how rigid he had been throughout the film. It's not just my feminist desire for Roopa to be FREE, the ending is simply inexplicable to me from the man's side too.

But yes, this is definitely one of the movies that fit into the "you-gotta-see-it-to-believe-it" genre. And you actually gotta see it, even if it's just for Zeenat Aman looking like a goddess among women. I'm usually quite effusive about how beautiful and talented Shashi Kapoor is, but the ick his character gave me might have struck me silent for once, even though of course I found hime extremely beautiful and talented here too.

As one of my mutuals here said, this really is evil Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Raj Kapoor, you twisted, silly man, I was not familiar with your game.

PS: What part of India is this film supposed to be set in? I couldn't figure it out, and now I'm obsessed with finding out the answer.

This was such a stupid movie, in a way only Indian movies are and allowed to be stupid. I loved watching Aarathi be absolutely unhinged on screen — there were moments when I genuinely wondered if she was high while filming, because nothing justified her high-strung "LET'S BE NICE TO THE WHITE WOMAN WHO STOLE MY LOVE" energy. As for the white woman, she was genuinely one of the worst actresses I have ever seen on screen (yes, I, a Tina Munim fan, am saying this), but it was all so goofy I couldn't care less. I loved the song where she literally sings "Bili Hendthi (white wife) is so very excited!" It's called 'Happiest Moments' and you, dear reader, should definitely check it out.

But my favourite part? When Elisa randomly starts singing the 'Rangenahalliyaage' song to unsuspecting people in Gopi's ancestral village. All marks to Vani Jairam for making it actually sound like a white woman was singing the song.

This was so unexpectedly delightful! It was as lively as the source text demanded — one major reason why this almost came close to the 1995 adaptation for me in some moments was because of how Lizzy actually looked and sounded 20.

Another reason was because it took some liberties which paid off well. The interaction between Lady Catherine de Burgh and Mr Collins, where she implored him to set an example for the parish and get married was as funny as we have all imagined over the years. And, instead of writing Lizzy a letter, Darcy just tells her everything himself — which I know is a little out of character for him (overall, the Darcy character was way less awkward than mother Austen intended) but it worked. It just did!

Vivian Pickles is a good predecessor to Alison Stean as Mrs Bennet, and it's comedy gold whenever she is on screen. I was looking forward to the Lydia-Wickham drama just to see her expressions.

Oh but I forgot to mention my favourite little detail about the series, the departure from the text that really made it stand out: Charlotte Lucas being sly! Yes, she hears the news of Lizzy rejecting Collins, there is a SLY LITTLE SIDE LOOK (missed by Lydia and Kitty, of course), and she runs off to Mr Collins!!! Like she saw her opportunity and ran!!!! Yes, she is kind, a good friend, and very much aware of Collins' inadequacies, but she is also out to secure her place in life the best way she knows how. A complex portrayal of a character I feel we don't discuss as much outside the classroom, achieved in a single shot. This is why we need the female gaze on screen.

Definitely worth watching if you're in love with Jane Austen and/or Pride and Prejudice!

So I found this interesting for a lot of reasons, not least because it stars my girl failure idol Tina Munim. It gave my braincells some much needed exercise, in pondering over the relation between identity and appearance, thanks to Tina's Sunita being nothing at all like Poonam's Sunita (the voice is not counted, since it's all Jaya Bhaduri and Asha Bhonsle anyway) — if you get a whole new face one day, are you even you? Is your name your marker or your face? Can one exist without the other?

The movie answers none of these questions, but maybe it's enough that it made me think about them anyway. All of you who look down at watching "trash" cinema do not know the mental exercise you're missing out on,

Another aspect of the movie I particularly enjoyed thinking over is the notion that it's better for a woman to die than to have her beauty destroyed. What the fuck, patriarchy?? Are women useful only in so far as we fulfil some incel fantasy? And just how deep-rooted are these notions anyway? Do they find primacy in cinema, a medium that made visuals the dominant form of expression, or do they exist before it too? Like I said, there's so much to unpack!

Oh also, Rakhee jumpscare is real. Shammi Kapoor, though, is the opposite of a jumpscare: he came on screen and I was immediately delighted! It's Shammi, a treat every second and more. And while Tina is purely "go girl, give us nothing!", Shammi is purely "I WILL GIVE YOU EVERYTHING I HAVE, THIS IS FOR THE GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The phenomenon of the two of them together on screen is unreal.

Lastly, I cannot go without mentioning one of my favourite songs ever, 'Tu Tu Hai Wahi/Yeh Vaada Raha'. I have always thought it's one of the most romantic songs ever written, and after watching it picturised on Tina Munim, I now know it's one of the best songs ever too!

PS: I may or may not be warming up to Rishi Kapoor. Strictly in his prime, chocolate boy days.

It seems quite disingenuous to be reviewing a rarely-talked about movie from decades ago that adds nothing of value to my life or the career trajectories of its stars (this one stars a bright young Revathy and a Mammootty when he wasn't the actor we know him to be today) — it's boring, clichéd, melodramatic without any substance to back it up, and simply put, there's a reason no one talks about it. Except me, of course, the dumpster diver of 80s Indian cinema.

Why did I watch it? I wanted to see a nice youth romance, and this one seemed to fit the bill. But the youthfulness lasted barely half an hour, and it was all "father pretends his daughter's child is dead to save honour and subjects both to horrors unknown" from thereon. Well well well. I shall find my next undiscovered gem some other day.

That rare warm film that's also somehow representative of an entire generation and its perspectives on life, love and all that jazz. I didn't exactly like Deverakonda's character in the first hour, but Prashanth grew on me with his wonderful coming-of-age arc, his capacity to change and his want to become a better person (not just a successful one).

But the real star of the show was obviously Ritu Varma. I loved how Chithra seemed like two different people (during the Vikram era and after it) — it's not an easy task to pull off without going overboard, especially for someone so early in their career. Chithra is honestly one of the best written female characters in Telugu films I have seen, and it's such a shame that it feels like we get women like her once every 5 years or so (that's me being generous).

Anyway, I am so thankful to have finally watched this. An immediate comfort film, especially when it's a love letter to both growing up and food.

The age gap between Rajkumar and Rekha (40 years) was a lot more than Rekha's actual age when this was filmed and released (15 years). Indian cinema owes us all reparations.

Moving on from that, I found this excellently made, entertaining, and a good example of how adaptations actually work — it had all the glamour of the James Bond movies, but still managed to bring in the local flavour. I hope this, and the other films in Rajkumar's CID 999 series, get restored soon. They would definitely make for a fun revisit (not to forget that they seem much more interesting than most of the "spy" movies being made today).

I don't think Kishore's voice suited anyone as flawlessly as Sanjeev in 'Meri Bheegi Bheegi Si' (yes, I am very much including Kishore himself in this list). The song, the sequence, its moment in the film is so well done, it left me reeling for a couple of hours after finishing the movie. It's like the Lata-Meena combo for Paakeezah's 'Chalte Chalte' track — sure, both the singer and the actor have had excellent sequences with others, but this one is perfect in and of itself, and also through the significance it holds in the overall narrative of the film.

Jaya is a lot of fun as Anamika et al. But when is she not, in this phase of her career? Like this is what I came for, and Jaya absolutely delivered. I love her, and I am just waiting for the feral Jaya renaissance that we, as a society of people who hate having fun, desperately need.

Also, I wish marketing was a real thing back then and they got someone to write Deven's goofy little misogynistic Hindi novels as a publicity exercise.

I don't know why I keep coming back to this Polavaram propaganda film. Is it the young Allu Arjun charm? Is it the Prakash-Raj-as-villain insanity that I find soothing (I do, with all my heart I DO)? Is it the general V V Vinayak brand of cinema that I have come to somewhat enjoy over the years?

It's probably a combination of all three, with the added advantage of Telugu films being predictably unhinged, unlike real life. Thank you for your service, TFI, I love you more with every stupid year.

I loved watching this so, so much!

You probably wouldn't expect grumpy Prakash Raj and Sneha to work, but they just do. Their chemistry hits you just like having a really excellent biriyani or dosa after months of not having the good stuff does. I liked the Meghana-Navin sub-plot too, but wasn't too fond of the adivasi one. I get it, Kalidasan is a self-righteous man who makes up for his loneliness by possibly indulging in the idea of finding his own family, but it seemed too much and ultimately went nowhere in of his trajectory. Plus, the whole idea of a non-tribal person "saving" an indigenous man from his own family is kind of highly problematic, and is what ultimately makes me not want to give this movie a full 5 stars.

But back to the good times: when Sneha asked "Who is this villian?" referring to Prakash Raj, I laughed harder than I thought was possible at such an old and obvious joke. Timing really is everything.

Unfairly overlooked album — even though every single song (except 'Jaan Pehchaan Ho') acts as a disruptor to what was supposed to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller (at least, as per the source material), you can't help but groove along. After a point, I gave up on the plot and gave my full attention to the music, a decision I do not regret at all.

Apart from the album, the real heroes of the film are Helen, Mehmood and Pran. The sheer joy of watching Helen be an infectiously delightful it girl more than balances out the insufferable moral preachings of the male lead who brands her as "bad" and forbids his love interest from becoming like her. Guess what bro, she already got drunk with her AND HAD FUN!!!!

PS: I will never forgive the makers for including that attempted r*pe scene. So unnecessary, even by old Bollywood standards.

Almost perfect melodrama, especially in the scene where the father dies on the staircase while the daughter plays music so loud that the railing vibrates and he loses his grip and falls to his death.

1) Quite ableist in its treatment of Shobana's "sacrifice" arising out of her complete self-rejection due to her disability (what even was the refusal of medicines and treatment all about?!) and definitely leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

2) Unlike other Malayalam movies, this one actually has a happy ending (no spoilers!) which took me OUT. After 2 hours of tragedy/tragic foreboding, you're telling me things somehow actually turned out the way I wanted them to? Tennessee Williams was so real for writing this role specifically for Anna Magnani, like that's the perfect ode to an actress of her calibre and the kind of feelings she can evoke in her viewers.

I had an absolute blast with this, my silly little camp romance! Serafina was clearly out of it, that's literally her character description, so I don't think there's any point in analysing her motives (everything boils down to her ex husband anyway). Instead, I think it's a better option to just enjoy the wild ride her histrionics and complete lack of emotional maturity take you on. And when paired with the utter clownery of Burt Lancaster, it's truly a sight to behold.

So glad Anna got an Oscar out of this.

there's a lot i still have to get through, i know, but had to document all that i went through this year anyway! will make a separate list for fav first-time watches, this one is only for 2023 releases.

  • Jawan

i mean... tunak tunak takna kyu jhijhak jhijhak jhakna kyu, BANDA HO ZINDA HO! kept my sanity intact for a majority of the year, thank u srk, atlee and nayanthara🤍

  • Leo

my darling vijay breaking down and calling himself a loser and also my darling vijay sitting down in that chair in the beginning of 'naa ready'... another film that kept me and my mental health from slipping further

  • Maaveeran

    artists are the real superheroes

  • Bottoms

the lesbian high school mass sex comedy we all needed (get out of here if you didn't like it, i'm so serious!!!)

  • Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

a core memory of 2023 will be going to watch this after work, all alone, and crying silently in the theatre, marvelling at the beauty of it all

  • Month of Madhu

simultaneously acknowledges the power of being alone, and the beauty of connections, two things i thought about a lot this year. this is the one film from this year i'd go back in time to watch for thr very first time again, if i could.

  • Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani

    BUT OBVIO

  • Kathal

    sanya malhotra girlies, let's go!!

  • Maamannan

i find myself thinking about this film a lot, specifically vadivelu and how the film depicts trauma. need to revisit sometime soon, probably as a double feature with pariyerum perumal

  • Khufiya

tabassum fatima hashmi, you will always be my queen, but especially when you're gay af

my favourite films i watched this year which didn't release this year. going through my diary on letterboxd also made me realise just how easily i move on from films i might have liked and rated highly when i watched highly but don't consider "favourite" anymore even if i do see myself watching them in the future... is this just another manifestation of commitment issues?

  • Kaakha Kaakha

when i say i was obsessed with this film, i mean utterly obsessed to the point i was watching it during work hours at my office!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sankarabharanam

probably k viswanath's best work— i loved the intensity with which it looked at art, caste and how they affect each other.

  • Vasu

WHY DIDN'T I GROW UP LOVING THIS MOVIE!!!! why did i only discover it in 2023!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kannukkul Nilavu

one of the best ever vijay performances, and shalini and director fazil just make it all better!

  • Teesri Kasam

i have honestly not been able to stop thinking about waheeda and the unfairness of love in a fractured society ever since i saw this movie

  • Teesri Manzil

    a proper bollywood bop!

  • Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam

    quintessential mammukka masterclass!

  • Bhaji on the Beach

what does it mean to be indian when you're actually not? very curious to know what my diaspora besties would think about it

  • Thillana Mohanambal

if i was a little less drowning in work, i would have made mohanambal my entire personality

  • Bajrangi Bhaijaan

the way i was shook to discover that this was actually a great movie... a humbling experience

one of my favourite directors, no one can do proper mass like him currently. based strictly on personal preference!

  • Theri

if you know me, you know this movie. atlee went off, and made the transition from ilaya thalapathy vijay to thalapathy vijay so smooth. when i say few directors know how to present their hero like atlee does, i mean it!

  • Jawan

it took me almost 4 months to come to this decision, but as much as i love and will always love jawan, theri truly has been there for me at my rock bottom. it shall stay at the top!

  • Raja Rani

another actor whose filmography has benefited from an atlee association is nayanthara! it's so obvious he loves her and wants to bring out a side of her not explored much before this film. the film is essentially a mouna raagam au, and nayanthara's character here feels as fresh as revathi's in the original— that's how you pay a tribute. need atlee to do a romance again asap.

  • Bigil

despite how all over the place this film is (and i say this as a fan), atlee manages to score well with vijay (not so much with nayan, so jawan better be an apology!)

  • Mersal

as the number one believer in atlee's vision, i see where he was going with it... but i can't see more thanks to all the information that is thrown during the almost-three hours of its runtime.

inspired by my dearest sandi garu + fav actor mentioned in notes (YES I DO HAVE A LOT OF FAVS WHAT ABOUT IT) + when i say "only", i mean ONLY (which excludes dilwale because apart from srk, i was also pumped for an srk-kajol reunion or an established bad movie which i as a trash movie connoisseur only watched to see how bad it can get, like this list is meant for films i walked into blinded by LOVE)

  • Guddu

srk; the ones we love the most... truly hurt us the MOST. i have usually found something to appreciate in every srk film, even if it is how he has been styled but this was truly irredeemable

  • Udanpirappe

jyothika; i feel asleep within 20 minutes and didn't even bother restarting it because i just felt furious with this film for wasting some of the precious free time i had back then

  • Annabelle Sethupathi

vjs; as i mentioned in my review, after this film, i stopped complaining about my favourite actors not working enough

  • F2: Fun and Frustration

    venkatesh; only frustration!!!!!

  • Podaa Podi

shobana; oh i am laughing at myself too, don't worry!

  • Khuda Kasam

tabu; i always slightly disliked sunny deol, but this film ramped it up to full-on hatred

  • Laaga Chunari Mein Daag: Journey of a Woman

rani mukerji; i am still SCARRED

  • Hawa

tabu; oh she has hurt me so deeply i can't even begin to tell you!

  • Rajaputhran

shobana; she had clearly stopped giving a fuck about her career at this point lmao

  • Farishtay

sridevi; one of the worst, worst, worst films i have ever seen.

personal preference + only based on what i have seen so far + read the notes!

last updated: december 13, 2023

  1. Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule

Oh, the way he owns this movie despite playing the biggest loser. Who could hate him?!

  2. Kshana Kshanam

My first ever Venky movie and my first reaction was "wow the lead actor is so handsome". Chandu stan forever!!

  3. Dharma Chakram

I don't understand Telugu fluently, but his performance is so compelling that I didn't feel like I missed out on anything.

  4. Nuvvu Naaku Nachav

Half the reason this movie is a classic is Venky's acting. The poem scene lives rent-free in my head.

  5. Drushyam

So much in the Drishyam story depends on the main hero, and Venky is as reliable as ever. Loved his performance the most out of everyone who attempted it.

  6. Vasu

    full meal performance

  7. Devi Putrudu

Carried it on his shoulders, and made it memorable: I can't see anyone else doing justice to this movie like Venky did.

  8. Raja

Another movie where Venky gets to display the full extent of his comic skills. Also, his chemistry with Soundarya is too precious for words!

  9. Swarnakamalam

His character here made me feel quite annoyed and frustrated, but I can't deny how good he was here. The movie belongs to Bhanupriya and Ilaiyaraaja but he leaves his mark anyway.

  10. Prema

Young, hot, fresh, and extremely talented. Wish he had been paired opposite Revathi again, those two were everything.

  • Manichitrathazhu
  • Nagina

as the title suggests, this list is about shobana's performances, not the movie as a whole. personal preference + based on what i have seen so far + read the notes!!

  • Innale

if there is one actress who could personify memory and its faultlines, it's shobana, the eternal ethereal enchantress.

  • Manichitrathazhu

changed cinema as we know it. no one who followed came close (ily jyothika, but i gots to be real)

  • Thenmavin Kombath

comedy queen dance queen fashion queen AN ICON THROUGH AND THROUGH.

  • Minnaram

the ending broke me, but shobana... u chaotic yet tragic icon...

  • April 1st Vidudala

i will not lie, shobana acting in a film that has MY BIRTHDAY in its title is a big part of its charm for me... all that aside, i appreciated how fierce but soft her character was here, and how she managed to show true evolution despite not having enough scenes

  • Ee Thanalil Ithiri Neram

baby girl went off and held her own against mammukka (both character and acting wise) and i was rooting for her throughout!! such a sweet and melodramatic film also

  • Appula Appa Rao

i'm an indie shobana fan because what most people feel about her and mohanlal is what i feel about her and rajendra prasad

  • Makalkku

broke my heart. wouldn't have been half as impactful without her

  • Manathe Vellitheru

    she's a superstar

  1. The Namesake

It's the way she owns the movie despite not being the "main character". Also this was the movie that made me realise Queen T's power so it had to be on top.

  2. Kandukondain Kandukondain

My favourite scene ever is the Manohar-Sowmya climax. And my second favourite is when they meet for the first time.

  3. Haider

As a wise person once said "ofcourse everyone wants tabu".

  4. Ninne Pelladatha

Mahalakshmi aka Pandu is my comfort character (and Tabu-Nag are my comfort pairing but let's not go there).

  5. Andhadhun

Who is immune to Miss Simmi? Not me!

  6. Cheeni Kum

personal preference + subject to change + read the notes!!

  1. Sarpatta Parambarai

not gonna lie, i was quite confused between this and attakathi, but the way kabilan is easily one of the best men ever written (if not the best) convinced me to put this on top

  2. Attakathi

two of the strongest debuts in the history of cinema, and the beginning of a goat collaboration. can't wait for ranjith sir to make another rom-com, it's been 10 years already!

  3. Madras

kalaiyarasan kingu kingu. karthi too, but him more <3

  4. Natchathiram Nagargiradhu

almost like conversing with ranjith himself.

  5. Kaala

still wish a middle aged actress had been cast in huma's role. me if u need help in the middle aged actress dept pls.

  6. Kabali
