Cohen uses comics like Tashlin uses them, as a bridge between realistic events and fantastical events which allows one to emerge from the other with ease. The most striking of these fantasies are driven by Cohen's tenderness and vulnerability, similar to how Daney described Quine--- he can kick around his characters freely, but just can't let them die.

Every other Fleischer I've seen has been plastic in a way that made it feel really flexible and smooth, but this one feels so much tougher and more geometric, almost like what I'd expect from Preminger. It's still distinctly a Fleischer film, though, and probably my favourite I've seen so far.
