Young Mr. Lincoln was released in the same year as Stagecoach, and it marks the first John Ford film that I've genuinely enjoyed. I've mentioned before that courtroom dramas from this era are a particular favorite of mine, and Young Mr. Lincoln certainly delivered on that front.

While the film starts somewhat slowly, the courtroom scenes are where the story truly captivated me. Henry Fonda's performance is outstanding, and John Ford's direction is stellar. Overall, I found Young Mr. Lincoln to be a very enjoyable film.

So, apparently, this movie is part of "Ford's Cavalry Trilogy," along with Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. So far, I am not enjoying these types of Westerns. I struggle to connect with the story or any of the characters. While I'm not completely bored, I find that it doesn't live up to my expectations of the greatness I thought it would be. My latest Review of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning remains largely unchanged. Nevertheless, I previously stated that there were no flaws in the film, but upon reflection, I realize that there are some imperfections. However, I choose to accept these shortcomings as part of what makes this a thrilling movie. It is a high-octane film with an immersive yet terrifying plot. It's an awesome movie plain and simple.

P.S. I've noticed that I was tending to be quite harsh with my film ratings the last years, reserving 5 stars for only the most outstanding films. Despite this tendency, I've been giving a lot of scores around 94%, which is just shy of a perfect score. I'm working to be more open-minded and willing to give 5-star ratings when a movie truly deserves it. This doesn’t mean I will ease my standards; I just want to be a bit more positive about the greater films. If that makes sense, it was just a little non pertinent note.

Sunset Boulevard was a significant letdown, especially considering its esteemed reputation and my positive experiences with Billy Wilder's other films. Up until now, I hadn't rated a Wilder film lower than a 4/5, which made my disappointment even more pronounced.

While the film's technical aspects are undeniably polished and the acting is strong, I struggled to connect with the narrative and find the characters compelling. Norma Desmond's extreme narcissism was a major obstacle for me. While I understand that her unlikeable nature might have been intentional, I found it difficult to move past my aversion to her character and fully engage with the story.

I acknowledge that my high expectations may have contributed to my disappointment, and I understand why Sunset Boulevard resonates with so many viewers. Unfortunately, it simply didn't work for me.

After delving into Billy Wilder's filmography, Witness for the Prosecution has quickly become my favorite. Perhaps it's my affinity for courtroom dramas, or maybe the genre simply had a certain appeal in the pre-1960s era, but I found this film captivating. Although the beginning was a bit slow, this is easily forgiven once the extensive and gripping courtroom sequence begins. Steven Spielberg's direction is commendable, and it would be unfair to call the film outright "bad." However, the film suffers from a significant pacing issue; it drags considerably. The Man with the Golden Arm disappointed me for two main reasons. First, I had high expectations because I was proud of my criteria leading to being hype for this week. Second, I really enjoyed Otto Preminger's previous projects that I watched and was looking forward to this one too. However, it didn't feel like the typical Otto Preminger film that I had ired in his other works.

The premise is interesting and audacious for its time, effectively highlighting the harsh realities of drug addiction. Unlike many others, I wasn't fond of Frank Sinatra's performance; while many consider it his career-best, I personally did not share that sentiment, possibly due to a lack of emotional connection with his character.

I found the entire first act quite dull, and while the last act was somewhat more engaging, I didn't really care for the plot twist. It's a bit disappointing because the ending was quite surprising and had the potential to be great, if I had been engaged before the last minutes. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right mood, but overall, this experience was disappointing for me.

Black Hawk Down is an action-packed film that presents the disastrous outcomes of a military mission aimed to capture key underlings of a Somali warlord.

One of the standout aspects of the movie is its impressive ensemble cast, featuring actors like Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, William Fichtner, Sam Shepard, and Jason Isaacs, who were well-known at the time. Additionally, the film includes future stars such as Orlando Bloom and Tom Hardy, who both rose to prominence in subsequent years.

Moreover, it’s worth mentioning Hugh Dancy (Will Graham in Hannibal), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones), and Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy in Modern Family), contributing to a film filled with recognizable faces. This alone makes it worth watching, not to mention that each actor plays a significant role and delivers great performances.

However, it is the high-octane adrenaline that truly steals the show. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, with masterful editing and pacing that maintain the emotional intensity. Ridley Scott does an excellent job delivering a gripping story. Despite some historical inaccuracies regarding Malaysian during the events (they were nowhere to find in the film) and minor differences in war tactics, the film is apparently a pretty good portrayals of these events, which is pleasantly surprising given Ridley Scott's reputations in these kind of films.

For all these reasons, Black Hawk Down is definitely worth a watch.

Surprisingly, Cameron Diaz delivered a good (not great) performance as well. I challenge anyone to suggest a film where she's great, and I'll watch it first thing.

Tom Cruise has had his share of both good and bad films, but I generally find more good than bad, so I wasn't skeptical about his performance. However, I did have my doubts until I read reviews by Luke and Chris. The story captivated me throughout its entire runtime, even though I was extremely tired while watching it; I still managed to finish it due to the film's intriguing, mind-bending and mysterious plot.

While the film is chaotic and confusing at times, those elements contribute to its uniqueness and unpredictability. Cameron Crowe is known for both great and less impressive creations, but Vanilla Sky solidly falls into the "great" category for me. Crowe, an obvious music lover, also enhances the film with a strong soundtrack. I don't know why I hadn't seen this before; it is definitely worth watching.

I'm Still Here is a movie that shows us how quickly a political system can turn into a fascist regime. The chemistry between the family adds an authentic touch to the story, making the film even more emotional and thought-provoking. Fernanda Torres was fantastic; in my opinion, she was robbed of the Oscar win. This type of film reminds us that we are not always sheltered from drastic political changes and that sometimes we must be grateful for the political system we have, even if it is not perfect, while also remaining alert to the possibility of significant changes.

A War is a powerful film that offers an authentic glimpse into the lives of soldiers during wartime. It explores the complexities of their experiences, including the harsh realities of war, the emotional toll of being away from family, and the weight of decisions that can alter their lives forever.

The film’s first half starts slowly but maintains your attention with its thought-provoking narrative. The second half will triggered you until the very end. Pilou Asbæk delivers a remarkably strong performance. This is a movie that is definitely worth watching.

Braveheart is utterly epic. The battles are grandiose, the speeches are memorable, the story is truly entertaining and perfectly by a beautiful score. Never during the entire three hours was I bored. Mel Gibson gave an incredible performance, and I initially thought his accent would be poor, but it wasn't. Honestly, this film does an incredible job to entertain me, and I totally understand why I liked it so much 10-15 years ago.

However, the liberties this film takes with history are incomprehensible. I can understand changing some aspects to romanticize or captivate the story further, but transforming the narrative into something almost entirely fictional when the original history is equally, if not more, interesting makes no sense to me. While you might be able to enjoy this film without considering historical accuracy, the truth still matters to me in historical films, as I always wonder if events portrayed actually occurred, but unfortunately it's not always the case.

It is still a good film, but the inaccuracies impacted my rating. Nevertheless, as I mentioned in my review of The Patriot, while it’s essential to acknowledge its lack of historical fidelity, we can still appreciate the movie for what it is.

Directing a film at 94 years old is definitely impressive, especially when the film ends up being a good one. I enjoyed Juror #2 a lot; it does have some flaws, particularly in the script. The courtroom scenes specifically felt a bit silly at times.

However, the plot as a whole was suspenseful and captivating. Nicolas Hoult and Toni Collette delivered great performances. In the end, the flaws are more forgettable than annoying, and I thoroughly enjoyed this watch. I really appreciate a good dilemma movie.

Chicago features insane set design, exceptional costumes, captivating music, and outstanding choreography. This film truly is a spectacle that showcases the best of its genre. However, as many might know, musical comedies and burlesque aren't quite to my taste.

I have never been a big fan of Renée Zellweger; I can’t pinpoint a specific reason, but her portrayal of a despicable character in this film makes it even less appealing for me. Despite my reservations about the cast—whom I’m not entirely a fan of—the performances were commendable. Both Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones delivered delightful vocal performances.

Overall, I doubt I will watch this film again, but it’s important to note that it is far from being a bad film. It ultimately comes down to personal taste.

With the return of Daredevil that reignite my excitement for the MCU, I approached Echo with an open mind. The first episode was promising, though it felt more like a recap than a standalone introduction. However, the series struggled to maintain that initial momentum.

Despite featuring two incredible fight scenes, there wasn't enough action involving Maya, which is sad considering this is a series labeled as mature. The fight scenes themselves felt somewhat useless for the overall narrative, but they were entertaining.

The finale left much to be desired; it offered little in of resolution or impact. Additionally, the chemistry between the characters felt absent, failing to engage me fully. Aside from the thrilling fight sequences and Vincent D'Onofrio's performance, the only positive takeaway for me was that it was only five episodes long, sparing us from a longer awful experience like She-Hulk.

In the end, while Echo had potential, it ultimately fell short of expectations in of character development and overall storytelling.

Week 6 - Akira Kurosawa

Rashomon is definitely a unique film for its time and perhaps even for our own. While some elements may have been explored separately in other works, the combination of these ideas in Rashomon was undoubtedly groundbreaking and probably remains undone. The film tells the story of a man's murder through four different versions recounted by four distinct characters. The use of the camera in certain scenes makes it feel as though we, the viewer, are the judges of these events.

The film addresses profound themes such as truth, morality, humanity, and existentialism. The use of flashbacks was also innovative for the 1950s, contributing to the storytelling’s complexity. The ending is truly remarkable, leaving us with question for days after.

Not only is Akira Kurosawa's creation original in its narrative and themes, but the execution of this story is also outstanding. The cinematography is incredible for its time. The casting was excellently chosen, with Toshirō Mifune delivering an especially outstanding performance. I am eager to see more of him, particularly since he stars in many of Kurosawa’s films. Rashomon serves as a fantastic introduction to Kurosawa’s filmography, and I look forward to exploring more of his work.

A Dog's Life is still an impressive film, showcasing Chaplin's signature style even at a young age. For a film made in 1918, it is truly remarkable—especially the stunts, set pieces, and the story. What's funny about me watching this documentary, aside from the fact that the two teams faced each other again in this year's Super Bowl, is my personal bias: I dislike the Eagles fanbase (even more than the Cowboys), and I wasn't fond of the Chiefs season this year (I hated them). However, I have always had immense respect for the Kelce brothers.

Jason Kelce made a statement acknowledging, “The Eagles fanbase are the most hated in the league.” There is indeed a reason for that Jason; they also have a reputation for being among the most disrespectful fans in the league. Whether loyal or not, it is what it is.

Moving on from whining (I'm sorry), Jason Kelce is a warrior with an incredible attitude towards his brother, fans, teammates, and family. Initially, I thought the documentary would focus on both brothers, but it turned out to primarily highlight the potential last year of Jason's career, which was a pleasant surprise. Don’t get me wrong; I like Travis and recognize that he is a fantastic football player. However, he can be a bit of a show-off. So, I prefer Jason; I always thought he seems to have a fantastic personality, and we hear less about him compared to Travis in general. Perhaps it’s because he's a lineman or maybe because doesn’t date Taylor Swift, but honestly, I think Kylie is the best wife anyway.

You can truly feel the love they have for each other. Their bond is evident, and Kylie seems like a very ive partner, willing to give everything for Jason. You can see that she is genuinely proud of him, and I have tremendous respect for their relationship.

I realize I might be rambling a bit in this review, but overall, I found this documentary to be quite good. It features multiple moving sequences that made me think it could have been an excellent double episode of "A Football Life". Jason Kelce truly deserves the spotlight. As a former offensive lineman in high school, I’m glad to see him praised and get rewarded with his own documentary.

Thanks to my friend Zach for the recommendation!

I don't mind slow films if they have a clear goal related to the pacing. The Girl with the Needle had a goal, but it took too long to get there, which ultimately caused it to lose my attention.

I honestly don't know much about Robbie Williams, and watching him being a junky and an asshole for more than two hours didn’t make me want to learn more about him. Additionally, there are rumors that he may have stolen the lyrics and composition for his most famous song, Angels, but since nothing has been proven, I won't judge him for that.

Let's keep it to what's in the film. I can't deny that this film is entertaining, especially given that Robbie Williams is known as an entertainer. His character is very charismatic and fun to watch. While his gimmick is certainly creative and unique, it didn’t work with me completely. Moreover, even though his approach is distinctive, it doesn’t set his story apart from many typical biopics. However, this doesn’t diminish the overall quality of the movie.

I had fun watching this film, the editing and choreography were impressive, especially coming from someone like me who usually despises musical sequences. The songs were better than I expected, although I doubt I’ll listen to them frequently. Overall, Better Man didn’t make me fall in love with the artist Robbie Williams, but he did manage to get my arse for two hours.

I'm going to be biased with this film because I love folk music, enjoy Bob Dylan's music, and adore Timothée Chalamet, so please don’t take my opinion too seriously. I understand why some people may not appreciate it; the story of a pop star's ascension can feel overdone. Also, we approach biopics expecting an in-depth exploration of the artist, which this film does not provide much. However, I believe the main intention was to illustrate the love-hate relationship Bob Dylan experienced throughout his folk era.

Dylan had a profound love for folk music, but as a melomaniac, he cherished all kinds of music and wanted to explore them all. Unfortunately, he felt stuck into the folk genre, which limited his creative expression. This theme resonates particularly strongly with the film ending with Woody Guthrie. Personally, I connected deeply with the story and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I appreciated the inclusion of other iconic figures, like Johnny Cash—who would make for a fascinating crossover with Walk the Line, also directed by James Mangold—and, of course, the beautiful Joan Baez. The soundtrack is undeniably a banger, although one must enjoy the genre to fully appreciate it. Timothée Chalamet’s performance was incredible, though I wouldn't say it's his best work of the year or in his career overall.

That said, I recognize the film has its flaws. It does not stray far from typical biopic tropes, and while it’s well-made, there are moments that felt a bit cheesy. Like many of you, I wished the film explored more of Bob Dylan’s past; however, I believe it wouldn’t have fit well in the overall narrative.

Overall, I enjoyed my experience viewing this film and feel the ratings may be a bit harsh. I understand that biopics have become somewhat formulaic lately, and not everyone is a fan of Bob Dylan’s music, which could affect their appreciation of the film. Nevertheless, I think James Mangold did a fantastic job with A Complete Unknown.

I wanted to enjoy Nickel Boys, but ultimately, it was a bit of a letdown for me as I struggled to engage with the film. First and foremost, I’m not a fan of the 4:3 aspect ratio, it rarely works for me. Additionally, the non-linear storytelling added to my confusion, making it even harder to connect with the plot.

I also found the point-of-view editing style challenging. The frequent shifts between characters' perspectives made it difficult to fully appreciate the performances. That said, I respect the important story that the film seeks to convey. The acting is commendable, and the ending is thought-provoking and memorable.

Honestly, I had to do some research on this film because the ending was quite confusing. I learned that the director, Mohammad Rasoulof, was arrested for ''allegedly propagandizing against the regime'' due to this film. Fortunately, he was released and managed to flee Iran to present his film at festivals. I don't know what the future holds for him, but I respect his bravery and hope for a prolific career.

As for the film itself, I was completely engaged during the first half. I appreciated the drama within the family and the tension between the daughters and their parents, (mostly the father). It was challenging to take sides in this story, as both sides had valid reasons. The father wanted to protect his family (and his reputation, obviously), while the daughters wanted to stand up and fight against the regime. That premise was truly engaging, with only giving more interest to where the film was going.

However, I found that the final act, where the film took a metaphorical turn, didn't resonate with me. The first half felt realistic and authentic, while the third act seemed misplaced, and the characters appeared to be entirely different, particularly the father, which didn’t make sense to me. While I understand that the final act was more politically metaphorical and I now know its significance, I still wasn't a fan of it while respecting its significance. I would have preferred it to remain authentic and provide a hopeful or impactful ending. I'm not saying the ending isn't impactful—it just disengaged me from the plot and the whole build up felt useless, which is sad for a 3 hours film. It might work for some, but it didn’t for me.

I honestly enjoyed Wicked much more than I anticipated. The film’s aesthetic is beautiful, and the songs are quite good (coming from someone who doesn’t typically enjoy musicals). However, I found myself not fully invested in the story. Ariana Grande's character annoyed me, and I wasn’t entirely on board with the vibe from the promotional interview—I’ve always had a bit of a bad feeling about this universe of Oz. While I know this perspective is somewhat outside of the film itself, it did affect my immersion into the film. Despite this, the film still managed to sur my expectations.

To be fair, this is my kind of movie. I’m a sucker for films based on true events, and September 5 kept me on the edge of my seat as it portrayed the tragedies that unfolded during the 1972 Munich Olympics. The cast is strong, and I was particularly pleased to see more of Leonie Benesch; she was fantastic in The Teachers’ Lounge.

The pacing of the film is consistently high, and I really appreciated the cinematography, which effectively transports you back to the 1970s with its live editing style and by showcasing the real technics used back then. While I know this film didn't meet the expectations of some of my mutual, I personally enjoyed experiencing the events through the perspective of the American sports broadcast team.

A Different Man is a remarkable film, and Sebastian Stan delivers an outstanding performance in his role. The movie shares a thought-provoking and important message. However, despite its qualities, I found myself struggling to connect with the story and characters on a deeper level, leaving me wishing I had enjoyed it more.

The Six Triple Eight tells the remarkable story of an all-Black women's battalion that undertakes the daunting mission of delivering 17 million letters to soldiers during World War II. This narrative is both powerful and deserving of recognition. However, I found the script and plot to be poorly executed. The romantic subplot involving Ebony Obsidian's character, Lena, feels forced and out of place, detracting from the main story. Additionally, Shanice Williams' character comes across as unlikable, which affects the overall appreciation for the film.

These issues contribute to an uneven pacing that resembles a rollercoaster; the sequences featuring Kerry Washington truly represent the film's high points. Her performance is exceptional and arguably the main reason to watch the film. Despite its flaws, The Six Triple Eight is a story that merits attention and appreciation.

Best Picture ranked in my humble opinion.

With notes for which film I think should have win every year.

  1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

    100%

My choice for 2003's Best Picture: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

    Note: it's not even close.

  2. The Godfather Part II

    100%

My choice for 1974's Best Picture: The Godfather: Part II

    Note: Notable mention Chinatown.

  3. Gladiator

    100%

My choice for 2000's Best Picture: Gladiator

Note: Cast Away, Snatch and Memento are great film, but they are not as flawless as Gladiator

  4. The Godfather

    100%

My choice for 1972's Best Picture: The Godfather

Note: I have not seen any other 1972's released movies, but is there even a question about that choice?

  5. The Silence of the Lambs

    100%

My choice for 1991's Best Picture: The Silence of the Lambs

Note: Even though I have some watch to do for 1991 released, I'm not seeing anything that comes close or has the potential to come close to this masterpiece.

  6. Forrest Gump

    99%

My choice for 1994's Best Picture: Shawshank Redemption.

Note: As much as I love Forest Gump, Shawshank Redemption was steal of his best picture award.

  7. The Departed

    98%

My choice for 2006's Best Picture: The Prestige.

Note: The Departed is great, but The Prestige is better in all aspects, the twist are better, the acting is insane and it's better and better on every rewatch.

  8. Oppenheimer

    98%

My choice for 2023's Best Picture: Oppenheimer.

Note: Christopher Nolan should have won a best picture way before this one. He totally deserves this win and I can't choose another movie for this year, as much as I love The Iron Claw.

  9. No Country for Old Men

    98%

My choice for 2007's Best Picture: There Will Be Blood

Note: No Country for Old Men is a great film, but not only There Will be Blood is a better film in my opinion, but it is also more Oscar material which I found it even weirder that it has not been the winner.

  10. Schindler's List

    97%

My choice for 1993's Best Picture: Schindler’s List.

    Note: There's no other choice.

After exploring Alfred Hitchcock's work in part 1 of my marathon, I became intrigued by another acclaimed director of the same era, John Ford. The mention of John Wayne in the sitcom "The Ranch" also piqued my interest, particularly through the character played by Sam Elliott, who was a big fan of John Wayne. Additionally, witnessing the portrayals of John Ford in "The Fabelmans" further fueled my eagerness to delve into John Ford's filmography. The collaborations between John Ford and John Wayne are especially captivating, and I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to experience their work firsthand. Welcome to the M. John Ford marathon.

Alfred Hitchcock opened my eyes with Psycho to the fact that some pre-1970s movies are indeed incredible. So, I told myself that I might as well explore more of his filmography. I bought a DVD collection last summer but never got the chance to go over the collection box yet. I noticed there are multiple Hitchcock movies on TUBI that are not in my 15-movie collection, so I wanted to jump on them before they leave the service. This marks the beginning of a marathon; I will watch more of Hitchcock during the year, but I'll take a couple of breaks between the parts (possibly 4 parts total). Let's get on this now. This is Part 1.
