Kaka Chichi’s review published on Letterboxd:
The weirdest thing about watching this movie is — I have seen this movie long time ago, probably when it first came out. Watching it today, armed with filmmaking knowledge, is such a potent Déjà Vu. It also strangely realigns with the time looping nature of the film. Considering it was made before Edge of Tomorrow, it is pretty remarkable to see some honest creativity juice pumping in a blockbuster movie.
Source Code is a smartly written thriller, a story that paces very beautifully with enough twists and turns that keeps the narrative interesting. Romance and suitable character relationships are interwoven into the intricate time travel tale, making the stakes even higher and the movie sweeter. The flaws, probably self-realized by the writer, is the father relationship (can be easily skimmed over) and the ending. Since Edge of Tomorrow still hasn’t cracked the code of making a great ending for a time looping movie, it is proven that a sci-fi ending for such occasions, are immensely difficult. The reason why the ending in Groundhog Day is better, is because it solves the problem by its fantasy backdrop, rather than a scientific explanation.
In any case, Source Code proves that a genre heavy film can be deftly executed to great entertaining effect.
