What this film does really well, is capture a cultural moment. The shift in comedy television & the frankly annoying of the original SNL
cast are the least of it. The bigger picture is a power shift between age groups, the changing entertainment economy & viewing tastes & the mainstreaming of the counterculture. JK Simmons killed as Milton Berle, whose character in some respects epitomises many of the broader themes portrayed in the show.
Can we just agree THE SUBSTANCE is a B horror movie with an A list cast and budget? Everything is even labelled with large text, just like a 1950/60s sci-fi B movie. I didn’t object to its politics & see why it has resonated with so many people. Moore is great, as is Qualley (who is amazing in everything). And there is heaps of ominous footage of palm trees to give it a Lynchean LA vibe. But its execution was pretty ham…
John Frankenheimer’s 52 PICK-UP (1986) is the best Cannon film that was made & one of the best Elmore Leonard adaptations. Discuss with reference to what a mean, lean little thriller it is, a terrific cast anchored by Scheider & Ann-Margret, and the wonderfully sleazy analogue adult industry setting.
