A glimpse into the complexities of a father-daughter relationship.

Once again, Wes goes full Wes from dialogue to production design and I think I’ve just got used to how intense it is. I kinda thinking Asteroid City was just too much but this time I barely took note so maybe it’s died down?? but idk tbf it’s hard to compare. Cera was a great addition as expected, Benicio is actually so sick (I’m glad he got a protagonist role) and all the s were great as well. I really don’t have much to say about this one but I enjoyed. Religion, family and redemption thematically structure this whole movie and I felt like that gave it a little more heart than his last movie which felt more about purpose.
Definitely worth a watch as it’s so short and a decent hoot.

Unfortunate film.

Clearly this was clashing with the Hollywood studio system and John Woo’s Hong Kong style, it just felt off bringing them two together; apart from making Tom Cruise look tuff as hell!
When the film does action, it slaps but everything else was genuinely a snooze fest. A completely different experience from the first film which felt so slick and meticulous. I don’t think the style change is bad, it’s just the execution of the first is significantly better.
I would say skip this but the big action set piece in the third act is so fucking good it almost made me think I enjoyed watching this film.

Watched this yesterday and really nothing stood out to me about it and I found it to be very mild. It doesn’t really explore anything that’s new. Plus, why do some writers love writing about feminine AI as ‘fuck dolls’? Like why are writers constantly obsessed with describing that as their only trait? Weird.

I need to it to myself that I’m still trapped by the Marvel machine cos I just always find myself watching their films.

But sorry are we lowkey back??? The return of the medium-good Marvel film??? An entertaining at the cinema that didn’t make me feel horrible after??? By no means am I saying this is the greatest film ever or even the best film Marvel has produced but it’s definitely a step in the right direction after some woeful attempts to reclaim the general publics interest. There was some genuine heart here with a great performance from Florence Pugh and I bought into every character on screen. And the biggest fucking compliment (which is lowkey embarrassing to even say) is that it feels like a fully coherent film!!! No horribly obvious reshoots, no painful ADR and no nonsensical plotting. This used to be some of the best Marvel films strongest traits and they kinda lost it after Endgame and that’s probably just cos they were trying to up that with the multiverse shit.
I love the arc of Bob and Yelena. I love how everyone was kinda a prick. I love how not everything was a joke. I loved the ending. I love the score (surprisingly).
Yeah I’m happy with this. I’m always gonna have a soft spot for Marvel clearly loool.

I felt like I did my disservice not watching this in IMAX.

Unfortunately, with social media and the hype that it created for this film, I don’t think it was ever going to live up to what social media made it out to be. That being said, I think it’s a great film! I love how deeply intwined music feels. It’s like the blood that gives the film life. Michael B Jordan is a solid bankable star; you can’t go wrong with him and he’s incredibly charismatic as both Smoke and Stacks. Jack O’Connell as well was really great, despite not really being in it enough (imo). I loved how simple the designs were for the vampires with just the red eyes. Very intentional to make the threat of the vampires seem a little closer to home for both the twins.
My main issues start with pacing. Idk how I’ve not seen anyone complain about this cos it’s incredibly slow and then seemingly blitzes past so much. It’s so janky at points like genuinely when I say the fact no one has brought it up confuses me so intensely. The ending being in the credits?? Ruins any impact for me I gotta be honest. It’s a bold move but for me doesn’t work. This will be controversial but like I’ve started to notice how films shot in IMAX kinda look the same. It’s not a bad look so im not complaining too much but like to me this looked so much like a Nolan film that I struggle to see this as a Coogler film.
I am conscious of the fact that like i am probably being very critical cos of the hype so maybe some of my feelings are exaggerated. I don’t think it’s a bad film, not in the slightest, I just don’t think it had as much edge as everyone online made out. I definitely should have watched it in IMAX.

Should have watched this on Good Friday!

A cold, unfiltered and brutal glimpse into the troubles. Interestingly, a subject that is still quite touchy even today and it’s almost impossible to speak on this topic without having some form of bias but Steve McQueen does pretty well. Fantastic scene with Micheal Fassbender and Liam Cunningham which is really the crux of this film in an 15 minute sequence. It’s interesting how there are some people that completely understand the troubles and all its complexities but you bring up Isreal and Palestine…. I’m not gonna get into it.

What a fun little cinema trip. Reminded me of the days of mid budget movies filling the off peak seasons in the cinema. I didn’t go into it with much and came out pleasantly satisfied. Everyone here is great, there’s a really cool bit of score and I loved how all the lights looked fuzzy and warm idk how to explain it. Fuck yeah dude!

Big budget Sci-Fi satirical picture from Bong Joon-Ho, what else could you need. Bong Joon-Ho’s ‘Hollywood’ films are never as good for me. Not saying his films are extremely subtle but like Snowpiercer is so intensely on the nose it can be a bit exhausting and I feel like Mickey 17 rides that line at times. Like Mark Ruffalo’s Kenneth Marshall is just painfully Trump and at first it’s funny but starts to drain towards the end. Same with some of the dialogue just made me kinda groan. But again this isn’t anything dissimilar to what we have seen before from Bong Joon-Ho so none of this really took me by surprise and taint my experience.
It’s funny, it looks good, it has so much life which is so important for me when making a Sci-Fi and has that social commentary to give the film a little more depth. Everyone in this film is great and is clearly having fun and so was I!

Those first 30 mins were the perfect assist for the rest of this devastating film.

Fernanda Torres is an absolute powerhouse in this film and portrays this unique grief unseen or inexperienced for most people. It really hit home for me in those last 20 mins. To be robbed of your love, grief and normalcy by dictatorship is something I hope no one ever has to experience but, unfortunately, it may happen. The fact that far-right groups in Brazil tried to boycott this film just says so much about the political world we are living in right now. A very important film and a great nomination for the academy.

It’s great to see an elite auteur so early in their career!!

Wow. Very powerful film. I only really watched this for awards season but I’m so glad I did cos what an amazing film. It’s a shame we aren’t hearing more for this because it’s probably one of the better films nominated this awards season. RaMell Ross absolutely kills it here. It’s such a bold film but works exquisitely. Everything is masterfully done. I loved the sound as well it’s  harrowing and deeply disturbing at points then warm and crisp. Each frame feels handcrafted. Nickel Boys is not a film I will ever relate to but it’s definitely one that I will empathise with. To witness this exploitation and abuse of young black boys it’s almost alien to me. It’s completely different world to one I’ve ever experienced but in reality it’s right next to me. So many American institutions have abused black communities for decades and it’s probably still happening today in areas we don’t know about. I was pretty moved by this film, it’s really good.

This was the most okay film ever.

I’m pretty content in itting that I’ll always give Marvel the time of day cos it’s so nostalgic for me but I’ve stopped going in with high expectations. As a result, I didn’t mind this. It’s not as horrible as I thought it was gonna be but it’s really nothing to get excited about. The reshoots are painfully obvious and baffles me cos it ruins sections of this film. The concept is promising, reminded me of Winter Solider, but the film doesn't really have any flow with delivering it. I would definitely put this down to the reshoots which ruin this ‘flow’ and never giving it the ooomf it needs! There is just never any stakes. Harrison is good, I’m not sure about Anthony Mackie I’ll be honest and everyone else was pretty forgettable.
There could have been a really fun film here but it’s just poorly executed. There’s a lot of issues that hold it back but one of those is definitely just no one was good at their jobs loool.

Films like these are so hard to pull off well. An absurdist comedy with no dialogue and hints of poignancy relating to much deeper themes but it’s just eh. Idk it does a lot of like piss shit and fart jokes, which would usually get a giggle out of me, and it’s just too much. I found myself not laughing and just kinda going ah okay fart joke. How tf did Brooks predict so much??

Prophesying contemporary American reality TV and zombie smartphone s, Albert Brooks delivers a fantastic satire that explores the obsession with the fake ‘reality’ that currently dominates media. I think in ‘79 this would have probably have made people laugh more than it does now. This almost works like a horror film for a contemporary audience with how accurately it depicts Hollywood’s severe lack of empathy in regards to how it produces art. Brooks is also extremely self-critical in the role of an artist and how ego can harm the people around them in the artist’s quest for success in a project. I think Brooks is easily the best part and sells this concept in the first 10 mins. I really love satire and this is just harsh honest American satire. I am obsessed with the camera head equipment people as well, if that isn’t a prediction of the todays smartphone generation idk what is looool.

I think we need more intermissions in cinema cos it’s kinda great.

I’ll be honest I have no idea how or what to think about this film. Maybe I like the idea of it rather than what is actually present. A grand, cinematic epic that deals with colossal imagery while itself being colossal (in of length). I think the first part is definitely better than the second. Second loses a lot of energy. I also don’t know how I feel about the political side of it all. I’m not gonna say it’s pro-Zionism as I just don’t know if I’ve got enough proof to confidently say that but I felt it?? That kinda unspoken thing lingered in the subtext for me. Subtlety was also very much lost towards the end but at the same time a picture this big ain’t gonna be subtle in any sense. It has a beautiful score and looks phenomenal and the sequence at the start where Lazlo is arriving to America is >>> It’s incredibly bleak as well. For me, the more i thought about it the bleaker I saw this film.
This is mostly ramblings at the moment cos again I’m just not sure about this. I think I can say I liked it and I would recommend watching this in IMAX!

The academy is not beating the musical theatre kid allegations with nominating this one.

It’s not as bad as the clips online have made out but it’s not good. To me, a musical having no memorable songs (apart from the penis to vagina one) is bad. I’m not a massive fan of musicals but I know a song has done its job when it’s stuck in my head. All these songs sounded awful and were not memorable. I think there must have been a translation issue cos when the songs were in english they were especially horrible. Some of the singing as well was just shite like how does that happen. The concept is interesting enough but the film is tonally all over the place. The actors felt like amateurs despite like Zoe Saldana having a pretty solid track record.
It was incredibly trashy which shocked me seeing how highly nominated it was. I’m not saying being nominated is an indication of a good film but usually they are well made, this is just bad loool. You’ll get a lot of people probably calling this woke or whatever but it’s genuinely not loool. That shouldn’t be what people criticise it for. But yeah, not gonna recommend.

I only watched this cos I saw a clip from a podcast of Matthew McConaughey watching the trailer for the first time and just being absolutely confused by it.

This has to be one of the strangest films I’ve ever watched. I did such extensive research on this film straight after and during watching cos I was just in absolute awe of this rollercoaster crash of a film. There’s genuinely too much shit to even recount but I’m gonna say my favourite ones.

- the original cut which was shown at Sundance was 150 mins long. I have no clue wtf could have been in those extra mins but it supposedly changed the entire genre of the film. The studio hated the original cut so brought it down to a 90 min rom-com but obviously that’s extremely tone deaf considering the subject matter of the film.

- Peter Dinklage (who stars in this film and plays his character with the maddest French accent) said the original 150 min cut was ‘gorgeous’.

- Gary Oldman called this the role of a life time.

-Lastly, Kate Beckinsale only agreed to do the film on a small salary if she could wear her ‘lucky hat?? God knows.

It was like watching one of the made up films from Tropic Thunder. Now i wouldn’t personally go as far as to say that this is the worst film ever made cos you can tell there was genuine attention put in place in some areas to make a compelling film. It’s just either edited out completely or written poorly and unable to do justice to the story. There is one scene that really demonstrates the complexities of the situation that McConaughey and Beckinsale’s characters face and each of their arguments and I kinda love it. Then the next scene is just the most abhorrent shit I’ve ever witnessed. Gary Oldman is surprisingly convincing despite the rest of the film. The ending is batshit as well I was crying with laughter.

With this film, the concept is so layered and complex and difficult to navigate without causing offence. The studio turning this into a rom-com was absolutely diabolical and stopped this film from working in any context. Not saying it would have been amazing but like slightly better. Some lines of dialogue are just horrible tho.

I can’t say I hated my time with this picture but this is objectively a horrible film.

Me, Emma and Shay realised after the film that Timmy sounded like Eric Cartman.

I hate most biopics. They are usually so formulaic that you know everything that is about to happen even if you know nothing about the artist. However, recently I watched A Better Man, the Robbie Williams biopic, and I actually really enjoyed that because of how batshit it is and I only watched it cos i thought it was going to be batshit. So why did I watch A Complete Unknown? Well I like Chalamet, no exciting reason.
Unfortunately, this is a pretty standard biopic :(
I enjoyed but it’s not changing my opinion on the genre or doing anything particularly exciting. It’s slightly more focused and explores one part of Dylan’s career. It feeds into the myth of Bob Dylan as well, like do not go into this expecting to learn anything about him cos you won’t but lowkey does that even matter. Like i don’t understand people who watch biopic to learn about their favourite artists, just go to watch a decent film. That’s why most of this genre sucks because studios seem to think that you need to put every little anecdote of a famous person in a film for someone to find it interesting. I’m ranting this is pointless.
I appreciate that we don’t learn anything about Bob. I like that. It’s a bit wanky and sucks off Bob a bit too hard at points but on the whole it still reminds you he’s actually a dick.
Anyway this is long and I gotta go bed I got work in the morning.

Pretty good Jesse!

A beautifully sad film that explores the pain of trauma. Jesse and Kieran play off each other incredibly well and both deliver amazing performances. While it’s not something we haven’t seen before from the two, I think it’s just two very good performances.
Really showed how beautiful Poland is. I guess it’s not really mentioned but I feel like Poland, in films, tends to get represented as quite a second-rate country but it’s just not. It’s a European city with a lot of history and great culture.
It is a personal film for Jesse and you can really feel that. He treats the sensitive subject matters with grace and respect whilst making it very heartfelt.
Some people on here have said it’s very on-the-nose and I would have to agree. Subtlety is minimal here. It’s not a major complaint, I think of the rest of the film sucked it would definitely just make it boring but obviously the rest of the film wasn’t.
Great shots, nice colour palette, lighting blah blah all that.
It’s a simple film done very well. Can’t complain.

Men written by women will always be perfecty creepy and horrible.

Despite the extremely dark metaphor/allegory/symbolism (whatever it’s called) it’s actually quite a lighthearted film. Well lighthearted for a slasher. Lots of jokes, exaggerated shots that don’t have the extreme grimy aesthetics of low-budget slashers. I don’t really find this as interesting as other slashers I’ve seen from this era. This is something you’d rent for Halloween with your mates and never much. Everyone on this app very highly rates it and I’m sadly not getting that experience.

So tough except Larry is a fucking creep.

This has significantly less campiness than the other Universal monster films and actually feels pretty layered. I loved the Invisible Man but it was quite silly compared to this. I mean both are quite silly from a 2025 standpoint but idk how to explain it but like this I was fully vibing with. I’ve watched a remake of this film which had Anthony Hopkins in it like years ago with my dad and I being absolutely terrified watching it. Makeup was cool, still holds up. Atmosphere as well just rocked like what a picture.

Andrew Garfield looked like he was on the verge of tears the entire time.

A simple, sad Notebook-esque love story centred around time, or lack thereof. The narrative of Tobias and Almut (ridiculous names for 2 British people) is non-linear, jumping back and forth from their early days to later days. It’s a beautiful story and amazingly performed by both Andrew and Florence. Their chemistry really makes this film worth a watch.
I wouldn’t have said this is the most memorable movie I’ve watched, I’ll probably not much of this as the year goes on but still an entertaining watch.

This is so early 2000s British core.

I enjoyed this. I respect the fact that the camera quality is kinda shit, it fits the vibe. How they filmed that sequence in London is crazy. It’s so good and you could never get that now. A classic and forever copied. I kinda feel weird about Garland so felt strange that I thought the script was great. It’s simple but effective.

HE IS COMING AND SO AM I!

4/4 for Eggers you absolute fiend. Easily Eggers most ‘mainstream’ film with the British accents for German people and easily to understand dialogue considering his previous pictures; however still so much to love! Lily Rose-Depp puts in a belter performance and Bill Skarsgaard completely disappears as Count Orlock. Eggers delves deep into the darkness of this story playing with the psychosexual aspect of Ellen and Orlocks relationship. It’s a story of power, manipulation and tragedy. The film is also beautiful with some fucking crazy shots and set design and costumes and lighting and Ahhhh!!! Everything.

I don’t think I get this one.

What was the point of it. The ‘Bride’ appears in the last 3 mins of the film and is built up throughout the entirety of the runtime. The monster going about the world was the best bit and that’s for like a total of 10 mins.
Idk how a film so short manages to waste so much of its time. Whale is still fantastic tho so it looks great and shit but man it just wasn’t as good for me as the reviews on here made out.

This invisible man is a fucking psycho.

Claude Rains as the invisible man must be considered one of the best casting decisions in cinema history. This guy absolutely smashes it. He fully plays this man who’s just lost his mind by being lost in the sauce. Incredibly short but not rushed. Great special effects despite the time and some fantastic shots. Usually your 20/30s films tend to be blocked like a theatre production but here it fully feels dedicated to the form of film. Another huge classic in film canon; I’m just going through them all at this point.

Sorry but this kinda slapped.

This film is batshit. The concept is batshit. Robbie Williams deserving a biopic is batshit. However, despite all these hurdles, it works. It’s heartfelt, fantastically directed, shot/lit/edited well and it has a fucking CGI monkey as the main character. No one else is a monkey; there’s not even a shot in the film where we see the real Robbie Williams which you’d think would happen.
The only real issues with this film lie in the fact that we have to kinda ride along with the idea that Robbie Williams is a good songwriter. Don’t get me wrong they don’t dig too much into it and he doesn’t have Rock DJ up his sleeve on a pure whim but he’s not that good. It’s also especially weird knowing that Timmy Chalamet is promoting his Bob Dylan film at the same time and Bob is just a significantly more revered singer/songwriter.
But if you go with it and embrace this film, it’s a fucking blast. Just what it is you’re watching and go with the flow.

Really hard to rate this with stars cos it’s just so of its time. I usually say watch films with the same mind as someone who watched this on release day but quite hard to do with a film like this. Continuing my Christmas film adventure.

This was probably not a ‘Christmas’ film but I’m counting it as it’s set in LA during Christmas Eve. From the get go, Baker puts pedal to the metal hitting you with the rapid dialogue, energetic performances and guerrilla camerawork that are consistent throughout the runtime.
Much like most of Baker’s films, it’s raw and human which I just adore. Amazingly quick and funny dialogue, authentic performances while being kinda trashy in the best way.
Ending is fantastic as well and sold this as a great film.

A lot of people are gonna hate this!

Guadagnino is back with a sharp turn away from his adrenaline pumped Challengers. Queer is an exploration of William Lee who is basically the alter-ego of the original writer, William Burroughs, and knowing that information now changes how I would see this film. Burroughs novel was more focused on the heroin but Guadagnino focuses on the sexuality. However, Luca still has to tackle the entire text and I think that unfortunately holds it back.
This film peaks hard when it delivers on this exploration of loneliness and isolation with Daniel Craig putting up a beautiful and intimate performance. It’s visually stunning, as always from Guadagnino, and has such a good soundtrack. Score as well (it’s Trent/Atticus so obviously it’s good). And I would say that’s the first 2/3 of the film then the third act hits and it sort of derails itself, seemingly on purpose, to change the narrative style of Queer. It’s all with the intention of driving home the core themes but i think it just maybe doesn’t fully work?? Im not sure. Luca is so good at directing and constructing films on a whole, but this just feels like too bold of a switch that violently contrasts against the first 2/3 of the film. It’s intriguing and some sequences are just fantastic with all the emotional marks being hit, it just needed to be constrained.
I’m kinda waffling now but it’s definitely worth a watch cos even tho it sounds like I’m slagging it off, at one point I said to myself this is one of the best films I’ve watched this year. It’s still worth a watch and i recommend!
