Dune: Part Two continues Paul Atreidis' journey through the sandy dunes of Arrakis. The sedate arthouse aesthetic often gives way to brute explosions and fast-paced battles. Although there are still large, epic images, the basic staging feels much more accessible than in the first part. This is also ensured by the carefully interspersed humor, which never goes over the top or takes up too much space.

On the other hand, there is once again plenty of mysticism, rituals and prophecies. The Chosen One of the Fremen, the conflict between the Houses of Harkonnen and Atreidis and the Spice War are all part of the story and are consistently retold. All of this is again enriched with lots of meaningful dialog and visions. Hans Zimmer's score booms sublimely and emphatically, once again underpinning the images with a goosebump factor. Despite the overlong running time, Dune: Part Two doesn't feel a minute too long. Villeneuve knows how to skillfully fill the running time and in the end the film almost feels too short. And above all like a second part, an interlude. And you want to see Part 3 straight away because it ends so abruptly again.

Dune: Part Two setzt die Reise von Paul Atreidis durch die sandigen Dünen von Arrakis fort. Dabei weicht die behäbige Arthouse-Ästhetik oftmals brachialen Explosionen und temporeichen Gefechten. Zwar gibt es nach wie vor große, epische Bilder, aber die grundlegende Inszenierung fühlt sich deutlich zugänglicher an als noch im ersten Teil. Dafür sorgt auch auch erneut behutsam eingestreuter Humor, der aber nie über die Stränge schlägt oder zu viel Raum einnimmt.

Dafür gibt es aber wieder viel Mystik, Rituale und Prophezeiungen. Der Awählte der Fremen, der Zwist der Hä Harkonnen und Atreidis und der Spice-Krieg sind Bestandteile der Geschichte und werden konsequent weitererzählt. Das alles erneut angereicht mit vielen bedeutungsschwangeren Dialogen und Visionen. Dazu dröhnt der Score von Hans Zimmer erhaben und mit Nachdruck, der die Bilder erneut mit Gänsehautfaktor untermauert. Trotz der erneut überlangen Laufzeit fühlt sich Dune: Part Two keine Minute zu lang an. Villeneuve weiß die Laufzeit gekonnt zu füllen und am Ende fühlt sich der Film fast schon zu kurz an. Und vor allem wie ein zweiter Teil, ein Zwischenstück. Und man will ab liebsten direkt Teil 3 sehen, weil er erneut mittendrin endet.
