1988
My favorite thing in this is all the beautiful hand-painted backgrounds of New York City in the 1980s. This was the last animated film Disney would do in a contemporary setting until Pixar much later and it’s fun to see how they interpret their animation style to recognizable things like brands and famous buildings and how they interpret the city to suit the mood of the story, like the beginning where Oliver is abandoned into a lonely, rain-drenched street left to find a bit of rest and shelter on the tire of a Ryder truck, just makes you want to cry.
