Magnificent. Still feels like the future and it was made in 1992. I’m enraptured, I’m ensorcelled, I loved this goddamn movie.

A tense, atmospheric exploration of xenophobia, hypocrisy, cowardice, and the long tail of tragedy set in a small town dependent on faith-based tourism. Shares a lot of DNA with R.M.N.

Super interested in what Julia Hart is doing with genre. This could stand to be just a bit leaner but it’s a sharp, thoughtful movie (with a killer soundtrack).

Exquisite. The color. The gentleness. A mouse being born, a leaf falling into a pond.

Who is important to you, Captain John?
Everyone.

Fascinating to watch this followed by a 2004 Scorsese interview on the film, one of his faves since childhood, and listening to him talk about (I’m paraphrasing) how Renoir captured a rich culture to which he did not belong without stopping at exoticism but also without feigning any sense of authority. In the context of Killers it’s all…
