Breathtaking animation, a stunning soundtrack and a truly engrossing, original and beautiful story. A masterpiece.
]]>They aren’t great movies but you can always count on a Venom film to be good fun.
Gets a bonus half star for the camper-van scene and that final montage.
]]>Thoroughly enjoyed this until it went full Lord of the Flies for the last 45 minutes or so. Feels like it had all the makings for a genuinely brilliant film before ultimately falling just short.
]]>Booooo.
I love Nick Frost but this is really bad. Little to no redeeming qualities.
]]>Denzel might be the coolest guy of all time.
]]>This has to be satire right?
The concept is mildly intriguing and Wahlberg is unintentionally hilarious but what on earth was that?
Some of the worst acting you will ever see combined with several utterly bizarre moments. Baffling that the same guy who gave us The Sixth Sense or Signs is capable of such nonsensical drivel.
]]>At one point, Stern says to Sam “Please don’t be boring”. Rather ironically, I was also saying this when I pressed play. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was indeed a pretty dull watch.
The whole thing is just a bit of a mess. It felt more like a poorly stitched together mini-series than a Captain America film, which ordinarily delivers some of the better MCU projects.
I feel for Anthony Mackie as he really seems to care about the role. It’s just a shame the writers appear not to.
]]>Bicycle Thieves is both a simple story of a father and son searching for a stolen bicycle and a complex tale of a man’s struggle to make ends meet and the lengths his will go to in order to provide for his family.
Your heart absolutely breaks for Bruno throughout. Truly one of the best child acting performances ever, quite possibly the greatest.
Also serves as a brutal reminder of how tough post-World War II life must have been. I struggle to wrap my head around how much the world has changed in a relatively short period of time.
Essential cinema.
]]>The French Dispatch is a story within a story within a story and in many ways is the most Wes Anderson of Wes Anderson films.
I’ve seen others brandish this with the “style over substance” tag and while I don’t completely agree, I think there is some truth to it. My interest was piqued early but faded pretty quickly after the first story.
There is a really fine line between a Wes project that I adore and one that I am ambivalent towards. Unfortunately this fell in the latter camp.
]]>A quiet and depressing look at the breakdown of a marriage and with it, a dissection of the American dream.
A really promising directorial debut from Dano made even better by a collection of superb performances. I kind of miss Jake Gyllenhaal being in everything.
]]>Visually stunning with an incredible score. One of the great revenge movies in my humble opinion.
This also might be Tom Hardy’s best performance and that takes some doing. Absolutely steals the show.
]]>Despite the short run time, I found this quite slow (and at times a tiny bit boring).
That said, there’s a lot to like here, particularly *that* scene at Lake Mungo. Also want to give it some credit for its unique style.
]]>I’ve struggled with some of Shyamalan’s more recent films but I’m such a big fan of his early work.
While there are a few more I need to tick off the watchlist, Signs might just be the pick of the bunch. There’s something about the world he creates that I take comfort in. While not at all religious myself, I really took something from Graham’s battle with his own faith.
]]>Very sweet. Also didn’t see the twist coming which is always an added layer of enjoyment.
Not sure if it’s just me but I really haven’t seen this film spoken about at all. Feels like a bit of a hidden gem.
]]>Good performances, eerie atmosphere and a cool creature. Hits a few horror tropes along the way but is subversive enough to keep you on your toes. Really liked this.
]]>James McAvoy absolutely carries. Such a great performance in an otherwise unremarkable film.
]]>That post-Trinity speech scene is truly special.
Nolan’s magnum opus and one of, if not the best of the decade.
]]>Loved the first 45 minutes or so but I think it’s fair to say it started to run out of steam by the end.
I also guessed the final twist about halfway through and from that point on was just waiting for the reveal.
Peele’s worst but still enjoyable.
]]>I have a love/ hate relationship with found footage movies but I’d be lying if I said I don’t miss them every now and then.
Chronicle is really fun, particularly the first half. It definitely goes downhill after a certain death. It’s also a shame that the main character is deeply unlikeable and only gets worse as the film goes on.
Very much in the Project X category of nostalgia and well worth a watch for the early 2010’s vibes.
]]>The second half is great but the first 45 minutes are exceptional. One of the great war films no doubt.
]]>I was into this for the first hour or so but wow was that ending painful to sit through.
Some of the symbolism was genuinely pretty interesting but a lot of the good work was undone by the pretentiousness of the last 30 minutes.
]]>Andrew Scott gets a 10/10 here. Truly one of the most devastatingly vulnerable performances ever.
]]>Completely blown away by this. A stunning soundtrack, scintillating performances and so so much sauce. The already amazing Coogler has elevated to a whole new level of greatness.
Without doubt one of the best films this decade.
]]>Pretty damn messed up but thoroughly entertaining. Was convinced Keith was up to no good, poor guy.
]]>The vibes are immaculate. Very much a spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused. No one does a hangout movie quite like Linklater.
]]>First, take a big step back… and literally, FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!
]]>A lot of fun!
]]>Pretty incredible stuff. Part one was definitely my favourite but that’s no slight on the others. Huge fan of Gael García Bernal as always.
Far too many dead dogs for my liking though.
]]>Quirky, gory and hilarious.
McDonagh and Farrell never disappoint.
]]>Legendary. So many meaningful moments squeezed into such a short runtime. Feels like this needs multiple rewatches to fully appreciate.
I’m also not sure a film has ever looked better, let alone a black and white one.
]]>You know a film is exceptional when you’ve heard nothing but great things about it and it still blows you away.
A gritty, gruesome thriller expertly blended together by stunning cinematography and haunting sound design. To top it off, that final shot is one of the greatest in the history of cinema.
Memories of Murder is undeniably a masterpiece. Genuinely insane that this isn’t even Bong Joon Ho’s best film (in my opinion of course).
]]>An instant classic. While I’m not sure it will ever reach the heights we saw in series 3 and 4 again, episodes like this make me grateful this show is still running.
Paul Giamatti can do no wrong.
]]>Feel like this one could’ve benefited from being longer. A lot shoved into a fairly short episode.
Reasonably fun but had the potential to be much better.
]]>Really funny stuff. I was hoping for a bit more from the climax but I enjoyed this nonetheless.
Rachel Sennott is brilliant.
]]>San Junipero from Wish
Emma Corrin absolutely carried!
]]>I will never not enjoy a good hangout movie.
I’d be lying if I said the age gap and racist jokes didn’t make me uncomfortable. At the same time, I respect it for being true to the times.
Cooper Hoffman is a star, I need to see him in more things.
]]>Watching this right before bed was certainly a choice.
I’m not sure if I’m losing my stomach for this genre of film as I get older but man this was one of the most unsettling watches in recent memory. The sound design alone was enough to make me wince. I’ll be seeing and hearing the court scene where they make eye in my nightmares tonight.
Exceptionally horrifying.
]]>Apparently there are two different versions of this episode based on the Barnies/ Bernies debate.
That’s pretty cool.
]]>Early season Black Mirror vibes.
Very impressive stuff and as with most good Black Mirror episodes, thoroughly depressing.
]]>Had no idea the cast was this stacked.
Okja is very sweet and does a really good job at delivering its messages on corporate greed and industrial food production.
This very much falls into the Snowpiercer and Mickey-17 camp of Bong Joon Ho films for me; a well produced film with an interesting premise but some way short of his best work.
]]>I’m not normally a massive sci-fi fan but I really enjoyed this. Sam Rockwell is great.
]]>I didn’t connect with this as much as I’d hoped. Lots of great bits including some pretty funny moments but I was more than a little lost on the plot at times.
I was very tired watching this so I’m sure some stuff just went over my head. I also watched the dubbed version which probably didn’t help.
Definitely one to rewatch.
]]>Watching a loved one slowly succumb to illness is undoubtedly one of the most heartbreaking parts of life. Totem is an honest and touching portrayal of this experience through the eyes of a seven year old girl.
There is so much to be ired here, not least the seriously impressive performances by the two young girls.
]]>Mia Goth with an all time final credits performance.
]]>Really gives off those early 2000s horror vibes. Didn’t love it by any stretch but it definitely kept me entertained.
]]>Yeah this is an absolute gem. I’m probably higher on this than most because I adore a good coming-of-age film.
The vibes are just too good.
]]>Very touching, I can see why so many people love this. Kinda feels like the US version of Bridget Jones.
If I’m honest I did find the quirky millennial humour a bit jarring but there’s still plenty to like.
]]>Wow.
It’s truly harrowing to think that these sorts of things are still happening today. The hug at the end when Lale finally felt safe for the first time almost broke me.
Nothing short of brilliant.
]]>Generational soundtrack.
]]>Space is scary!
