Exhausting and ridiculous. I’d read a few reviews slamming the first hour, but I kept thinking, how fucking long is this first hour supposed to be? The biplane sequence is terrific, but until then it’s a slog. There’s a whole lot of messiah posturing, but the only figure I saw soaring into the heavens was Icarus. Cruise and McQuarrie have pulled off miracles before fixing other entries like Rogue Nation and Fallout (not to mention Top Gun: Maverick, for that matter) in post and reshoots, but this time, their hubris beat them to it.
PS. Kittridge uses “whomever” incorrectly.
Automatic five stars for the experience of seeing it on 35mm. Bit of a portrait of the artist as a young man situation going on here, literally so in that one famous scene, with a ton of future formal and thematic elements freely (albeit a tad creakily) strewn about. Quite “modern,” too, in its sensibilities towards women’s liberation (and also “post-modern,” I guess, in that one joke about the policier “probably getting all the details wrong”). John Longden looks like Pete Serafinowicz.
