Alex’s review published on Letterboxd:
It cannot be understated the magnitude of this flick. To quote Gurney, “Holy Mother.” This movie is a masterpiece there’s absolutely no denying this. There’s so much proof of expertise filmmaking on display that it’s hard to summarize. I think what it is for me, really, is how impressed I am with how tight and clean this is as an adaptation of a book that has been widely regarded as unadaptable. Well, it’s not. Not if you’re Denis Villeneuve anyway. He shows how committed he is to the source material while also retroactively spanning the timeline of the release of Herbert’s books. Brilliantly altering the story where necessary in order to ensure that the audience is aware of how this is not going to go the way you think. The way I felt when this film ended was so incredibly unique that I’m obsessed with this feeling. How was this accomplished? HOW? Seriously. What an absolute all time banger that was so worth the wait and might be one of if not the best sci film I’ve ever experienced in a theater.
