Dune: Part Two

2024

An odd question came to mind while I was enthralled by this film: "Could Dune be my Lord of the Rings?" Technically this is a Sci-Fi series, but it could be seen as a Fantasy series. It takes place in a place far off that's similar, yet different than ours. It follows a lot of colorful characters with creative names. And it's full of magic... as magic is just technology that you can't explain. And I can't explain jet packs that propel you into the air without any explosions or fire... or fireworks that are more like food coloring in water... or a metal sphere spaceship that hovers while engulfed in flames. With all the effort to get on a Sandworm, how do you dismount one? (Especially when you have a whole crew and furniture???) Plus everything looks and sounds so beautiful.

Why am I gushing over this film, but only giving it 4 of 5 stars? It's a tentative score due to the story split. Yes, Parts One and Two could be seen as one complete story, it really isn't. Although it's A stopping point, it's not THE end of the tale. I need a Part Three in a major way.

P.S. I thought the Feyd character was Bill Skarsgård due to his voice, facial features, and movements... but something kept throwing me off to where I wasn't certain. Turns out the actor was Austin Butler. I am disappointed in myself as I used to be so much better at this game.

P.P.S. I also started to compare this to the Avatar movies as those core narratives are also similar. Plus I love desert and tropical environments nearly equally making both franchises complimentary there, too. But the two Avatar films each feel like complete stories within their movies while also being pieces of a larger story... something I wish Dune was able to do. They also approach the same subject matter differently... Dune seems more "head" while Avatar seems more "heart." I haven't fully thought any of this out to their fullest yet, but those are the highlights... do with it as you will.
