I hadn’t watched this since I was sixteen, and this still holds up to me. It’s a love letter to a director who never had any success, and yes, it’s highly fictionalized, but Tim Burton is never mocking Ed Wood or Bela Lugosi. It’s a tribute to B-Movies, the “freaks,” the outsiders, camp, and retro horror.

Yes, it’s very flawed, and isn’t nearly as good as the first Moana, but this isn’t ad bad, in my opinion, as people are making it out to be. Willem Dafoe’s performance, along with the rockabilly and jazz inflected…

This is difficult.

First of all, this is a technical marvel of a film. It is expertly crafted. There is masterful direction ( the blocking is truly phenomenal), gorgeous and brilliant cinematography ( the series of wide shots that always focus on the empty surrounding Lee is simply spectacular), the intense atmosphere, and the performances are all amazing. My main issue with this, unfortunately, is its story and script. It feels rather hollow.

     It all the ingredients…
