]]>Maybe the best Burton flick I’ve seen.

]]>I’m sorry — too referential, too gratuitous in the gore. Is this really where elite Western cinema is at in 2024? If so, we’re very much in a nadir.

]]>I have this new theory about films. I’ll tell you in person.
]]>Watched this with my future in-laws, who are Russian. understanding a modicum of Russian / Russian culture makes this movie funnier / more tragic than meets the eye, I believe.

]]>Pretty decent, def have a crush on Madeleine Stowe.

]]>Much better than Emilia Perez. Must be on a musical kick. But, you know, very campy.
]]>I’m not sure where to begin.
The plot - if there is one - is terrible. I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but clearly the protagonist would have been doxxed pretty easily IRL. There is no continuous thread. It’s a mismatch of ideas grasping for clarity. I’m OK with films not having a plot (I enjoy Last Year at Marienbad). But this film was clearly structured to have a plot and it just utterly falls flat.
There is, or rather, was a good plot lying somewhere under the surface. Maybe two. It’s just so disted. Where is the affection for the children pre-transition that is so central to the film in the back half?
Then the singing? It’s atrocious. The tracks are so corny, especially early on in the film. They get better. But the song about the scents? Character smells like everything.
Selena Gomez puts in a pitiful performance. It’s actual comical at times. The phone call to Gustavo literally made me laugh out loud.
How the fuck was this film so highly rated at Cannes?
]]>Very good.

]]>P decent Japanese noir. The allegory is a little obvious, but whatevs. Decent flick
]]>Maybe I’m just a heteronormative white guy, but I just don’t get the appeal of this film.
]]>Pretty decent 80s horror.

]]>Love the musical transition at the final gunshot. Someone should bring that back.
Pretty good noir with slightly more dynamic characters than one would expect.
]]>Good, not great
]]>Bloated, superficial, and just like not fucking good.
]]>Spike Lee gives and he keeps giving.

]]>It tries so hard, but the film never permeates the superficial and is essentially composed of glorified cameos.
